What would Meta Objectives mean to you in PlanetSide?
Role-based personal objectives? (reduces digression)
Empire-wide strategic objectives? (like escort the module carrier)
Seasonal Events? (fictional and/or real-life stuff)
Global challenges? ("summon the BFRs!")
Meta objectives means absolutely nothing to me, sorry.

To me it would mean a larger playerbase for longer. Most of the people here are hardcore Planetside players that stuck with it an didn't need some Meta Objective to keep them interested. Its all the thousands that left that probably wanted them lol. Most people just were not captivated by taking bases that would be retaken by the enemy overnight.
Personally I would lean towards seeing more Outfit an Empire based progression goals of some kind. Since it would be more unique an in the spirt of an MMO. I dislike how many MMO's try to make everything focused around the solo player. So that the individuals driving focus to log on becomes selfish an built around how they can better help themselves that day.

For me it means not so much a end goal but rather something to work towards like a treat. I would love for a sort of Warhammer Online Esc ending where you push back a side so far that has a special event depending on the Faction that was defending. A New Map or new setup that you dont see very often(i have a very trench like set up in mind).
The "achievement crowd" are not the type of gamers you as a community want even if it means lower pops. Trust me, I quit SC2 and WoW because of the whining, xbox generation achievement huggers. Nothing but senseless QQ.

As if PS was never full of senseless QQ.
I quit wow because the game has limited replay value if you don't like grinding up new characters. I quit SC2 because, while I love RTSs, I royally suck at them.
Avoid the forums and you avoid the whining.

Retention of players is what MMOs are all about; most use boring grinding to get people to the fun end game; PS has fun all the way to the end.
However, keeping the game fresh and interesting is the key; constant development of things that don't suck. Look at EVE which also came out in 2003; massive player base which is still rising because the had decent post release development. 14 free expansions... imagine what PS would be like if it had that much support.

eves not a great example for that really there player base for all its on the raise is no where near as big as you think take away the multi account players and there play base would be half if not 1/3 the size it is. I played for 2 years and had 3 accounts on the go.
other thing about eve as well is you do get the free expansions but you pay £15 a month for your accounts thats a 1/3 higher then most mmo's.
also you'll never get that sort of support from a company like sony CCP are like Valve there privately owned and dont have share holders to report to so can do what ever they like. and if rumours are to be believed CCP dust 514 will be released on Xbox/PS3 and PC so they'll be in direct competion for players with planetside next.

Last I heard Dust514 was only being released on consoles, specifically because "EVE was their PC game", but we're deviating...
I think meta objectives would certainly help, but as to what they'd be, what they'd reward or to what extent they'd interfere with regular goings on, I wouldn't know where to start. I'd certainly like to see seasonal stuff again though, so long as they were turned off within a reasonable time-frame.
I remember proposing a ridiculously over-complicated system where taking continents would give empire-wide bonuses that build up over the years, which, looking back, Firefly seems to have misinterpreted completely. :D But I think that was motivated by a desire to give some over-arching objective beyond just taking bases.

Both correct, it is in fact console only and a fail.
And back on topic..
I think Meta Achievements are a good idea but I also tend to agree with some of the posters here that this brings an entirely new element to the game and to me it's a very shitty element.
And that is the every man for himself mentality we see in MMORPGs. Its always about what's in it for ME? Who cares about everyone else.

Us PC gamers all saw Dust514 and cried when we found out it was console exclusive.
P.S. i think there is a DUST514 thread and there is a EVE forum, both a quite still so if yall want to discuss stuff there on those please do! Would be nice to meet some new EVE players.
ANYYYWAYS.
Meta Objectives... Id like to see battles that are "GM designated" That is the GMs pick an upcoming battle and let the population know that it means something. It would advance the story or something. If sony hired a guy to write an ongoing story about the battle for auraxis I think that would add some fun to the game. Switching home conts. Empires gaining or loosing benefits. That sorta stuff. Special one time/ few time use items. Special outfit boni. That kinda stuff.

I've been a fan of the events that create a temporary meta objective. I think thats the key word, temporary. They are good from time to time just to spice things up, but being a permanent fixture might change the feel of the game too much.

agree with raymac temporary meta objectives to promote use of under used maps or to channel game play in a different fashion to spice things up would be fun. but having them in game all the time would take away from the free flowing game play that was planetsides real strength
offtopic again for a second
dust 514 is only slated for console release but CCP have never denided a PC release infact when being asked about it at fanfest they stated there reponce was "maybe"

Meta Objectives can keep us away from repetitive facility battles, assuming PlanetSide next would be the same.

I think you guys are getting the word "Meta" confuddled.
Meta thing are things that are outside the game itself (I'm sure you've head "metagaming"): Using teamspeak, paying people real money to do stuff in game, achievements that display on XBL and PSN even hacking. All examples a metagaming to some extent.

Yeah, I guess "macro objectives" might be a better name, but we knew what he meant...You knew what he meant...I figure it's better to just roll with it.
Still, now you mention it...Actual "meta-obectives" might be kind of brilliant.
