View Full Version : Game title - "Planetside: X" ?
This may have been posted somewhere before but I couldn't find it anywhere.
So I decided to search registered domain names containing the word "Planetside" in hopes of sniffing out some info and I came across this...
http://whois.sc/planetsidex.com
So apparently the domain name planetsidex.com was registered by sony in september of last year. I don't know if I like this as a game title, but they must have registered it for a reason.
UPDATE 3/13 - looks like SOE also registered the domain name planetsidewarfare.com on 2/4/11

Devs and stuff usually trademark a bunch of names/domain names when they are hiding a title of a game, for example, for pokemon black/white they had also trademarked colors like pokemon maroon and turquoise etc
EDIT: planetside X seems alittle to cliche to be the real name
Right that's what I was looking for, a slew of domain names registered by sony, but in this case there was only 1.

Who even said it would start with planetside? May be something with auraxis in it.

Indeed. Anything is possible at this point.
Wasn't planetside2.com registered by a community member, then taken by sony via lawyers just because of copy right infringement?

Which would have been a colossal waste of money.

They were probably using it as a project name. Project X is a common name for projects that are in early development (not just in video games) but have no official name yet. Just in case they got so attached to it or would use the name in public they likely registered the domain anyway.
They probably called it something a little more unique later for use in public announcements (Planetside Next) because Planetside X sounds shit :P
Which would have been a colossal waste of money.
Actually anti cybersquatting laws have given private arbitrators the authority to yank your domain away if it contains someone else's trademark. udrp complaints are really really cheap and if you aren't a complete dumbass you probably don't need a lawyer.

,If "Planetside" isn't in the title they lose out on a bunch of name recognition that is mostly "It could have been awesome if they didn't X,YandZ"
But that's certainly better than no name recognition.
I don't understand this "colossal waste of money" thing at all. Domain registration costs like nothing. Nor does sending a cease and desist letter when you've probably got a fleet a lawyers on IP protection anyway.

Anytime you use a lawyer, you are spending money... and not chump change either.
As someone pointed out, you don't even need a lawyer to enforce copyright and trademark law on domain squatters. Which makes anything to do with a lawyer, a colossal waste of money.

See it?
Er, I'm sorry? I just assumed they would have their legal department handle it.

They were probably using it as a project name. Project X is a common name for projects that are in early development (not just in video games) but have no official name yet.
Also for projects that involve Matthew Broderick, Helen Hunt and monkeys piloting spy planes.

In the case of a company like SOE I have to disagree.
These folks have Lawyers on staff, they are doing this shit all the time as well as every other legal issue going on within SOE or whatever company.
In other words, the Lawyers for large companies like SOE are already on the staff they aren't paying anything different by using them for situations like this.

Sure they have lawyers on staff, but not for minutiae like a web domain.

Thats exactly why a company has lawyers on staff. You think they want to pay outside lawyer prices to handle shit like that? There's a couple lawyers in my family, so I get all the stories.

I think we already covered the part where a lawyer isn't even necessary.

Then lets get to the fact: Who cares?
Topic. NAme of the game will be Planetside: Xylophone War.
You will play by using a new Sony Keyboard to Xylophone adapter. The better you play, the more kills you get.

I was more hoping for Planetside: Pan Flute War, but I'll take what I can get.
Maybe they are just thinking ahead to Planetside 10

Yes, this is to combat the issue of having a similar-sounding domain name end up being a portal for porn or something.
....redirecting to Big Boob Bimbos! have credit card ready!
Yeah...no.
Just wanted to update. Looks like soe also registered the domain name planetsidewarfare.com on february 4th. I missed it on my first search.
