Greetings!
I have encountered a severe problem with my computer.
I had an old Geforce 8600GT card in my PC. The other night my computer crashed and when I booted up my computer the screen was extremly glitchy with lines and noise everywhere.
I tried switching monitor and checked all cables with no change in behavior. I then borrowed a Geforce 8800GTS from my brother and put that card in instead.
Now I can actually see on my screen but I still have a lot of vertical lines that are either green or blue depending on background color.
If i go into the device manager I have a exclamation mark on the gfx card with the description.
"Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"
Since I have tried two different cards despite that the show only some similiarity in behavior should I assume that it is my motherboard that is broken?

Best guess would be the motherboard.
Or...do those cards need external power? Might be the powersupply.

Good point. The first card where I got the worse graphic glitches didn't require a external source from the PSU but the second card did although that card was the one which worked the best since I am able to actually see anything on the desktop. :)
But it seems that the GPU is not working at all since I have code 43 in the device manager and it seems that the graphic feed is just passing through the graphic card. Since the card is not functioning properly I am not able to start any games what so ever which isn't that big of surprise. I have a spare PSU laying around I guess I could just test and jack it in and see if it makes any difference though I found it doubtful since I get these vertical lines even on the mobo splash screen when I boot the computer.

That is also a great idea. If I had a onboard video card. :)
Thanks for the tip though. :)
Did you try reinstalling the drivers yet? Sounds more like a video card issue to me, but that 8800 was displaying the same issue. I would try swapping the 8600 into your bro's computer and see what happens there too.

Be careful about swapping things. If something went bad it could end up having repercussions beyond that particular component.
For instance, a bad motherboard or powersupply could destroy a graphics card. As a rule I only ever swap in older junk you can bear to lose.

Yeah going to try tonight testing my 8600GT card in another computer I have which is my server. Will be interesting to see if it behaves strange there in that case I guess it is either my PSU or my motherboard that destroys cards. I believe that it probably would still be my motherboard then because my 8600GT draws its power from the PCI-E slot and if the PSU is bas than the motherboard should have fried also at least in my opinion. :)

I recommend to everybody to buy or gain access to a PCI video card if your mobo doesn't have on-board video. It's always good to have an alternative method. Also, don't wait on PCI cards, they are only going up in price.
Now, I just happen to sell them, so BUY ONE NOW FOR THE GREAT LOW PRICE OF.... Naw... I kid, we don't sell on the internet yet, but stay tuned. :p

I really doubt there are 5970s that run on the PCI slot....

Well yesterday I recieved new hardware that I had ordered which was a new Asus(Asus is the shit!) mobo along with a i5 Intel CPU and a Geforce GTX460 card and 4gb DDR3 RAM.
Threw it all together in my old computer and now he purrs like a kitten(well not literally ;-) ) so I am assuming it was the mobo that was defect.
Thanks to everyone though who took time to provide feedback in this thread. It was highly appreciated. :)

Can you really say you put it in your old computer if you replaced just about everything?
Grats on the new build. The 8600 GT is nothing compared to that GTX 460! Must be night and day.

Personally, I feel that if the mobo is replaced, it is a new computer. It's the only part that forces you to disassemble the entire computer to replace.

Hehe thanks Goku. Yeah indeed it is like night and day. With my old stuff I could get Planetside to lag some if I ran everything on max and I was in some huge battle. Now he don't even twitch. :)

Well I guess in a sense you are right. Guess I called it my old computer mostly because I didn't format the system drive which is kind of impressive with Windows 7 when you think about the Windows 98 days where the system drive had to basically be cleaned out if you switch graphics card. :)
Also because it is my old chassi, my old PSU etc. :)
