Just about two months ago I remember playing Planetside out of the hype that I would get a beta invite for being subscribed. No invitation. Whatever.
That's not the point though, I'm just saying I was playing two months ago and having some of the best times I've had on this game. The population was amazing, but now it's dead.
I haven't played in two months. It's proably because I've lost hype on Planetside because I really want to play the upgrade (PS:N)
My questions are:
Should I play again? Are the pop's good? I'm still subscribed.
Should I keep subscribed, or should I end my subscription?
I don't want to miss getting into the beta, but I also don't want to pay if I'm not going to play..

The beauty of life is you don't need forums to make these decisions.
If you still enjoy playing the game, even in it's battered state, than do so. If I didn't have a 14' laptop I'd probably still be subbed to this day.
I'll always enjoy planetside, partly because of nostalgia, partly because It's just a sweet fuckin game.
Thing is, even I catch myself complaining too much, when the reality of the situation is either enjoy the game for what it is, or don't.

Why are you already expecting a beta invite? Beta is probably not even going to happen this year.

If I had a 14' laptop, I'd call it a floortop. Damn thing would be heavy as hell.

I have zero pity for anyone that resubbed mainly to get a beta invite. The whole idea was merely hinted at the time, so anyone doing that was taking a gamble. If you lose a gamble, thems the breaks.
Now, if you ressubbed for the good fights, well we all know how successful that has been. I just don't understand the OPs main question. You want to know if you should still play...but you still have a subscription? Well, take 30 seconds, jump in the game and check it out. I wouldn't rely on someone in the forums to decide that for you when you have the tools to make the decision yourself.
As far as getting into Beta, Smed has said they will start their marketing and information push first, and then Beta will be right after that. So if you want to wait for beta to resub, then keep an eye out for that.

I'm not asking for pity.
I'm asking if I should keep playing or not.
How are the populations? That's all I'm asking.
If they suck, I'm not going to keep subscribed until I'm sure to get a beta invite.

Thats a question only you can answer. If you have a subscription still, I say jump on at a time when you would normally play and just check the map and see what the action is like.
As for me, I pretty much only get to play on the weekends now, and the pops have been good. I'm not seeing poplocks, but the fights are still pretty epic. I can't really speak for the weekdays though since I haven't been on then.

Jump in game and join whatever cont your empire is on then /whoteams or /whoempires
I'd predict more people are playing on the weekend.

Wow you guys are useless. It's a forum, that means an area of discussion. His topic of discussion contains a question - simple. If that's too tough of a demand move on and leave him alone. In the time it took some of you to reply with a snide remark you could have helped him.
Anyway...
Yes, play man. It's fun times. I've had some time off these past weeks so I've been on at all hours of the day and can always find a good fight. Sure it's not what it was back in 2003 and the battles are generally limited to one or two continents, but it's still fun as hell. I don't see any reason to unsubscribe unless you're genuinely bored with the game.

I'm not psychic. How do I know if he's going to enjoy the current state of the game or not?

he wasn't asking if he'll like it, he was asking if he should play again. Like most of us when seeking advice, he'll probably take into account the facts and make a choice based on his own judgment. Furthermore, even if he was asking if he'll like it, you could inform him based on what you think is enjoyable since he's asking for your(our) opinion.

I'll admit I signed up for the first reason, only to discover the second, it's WIN WIN!! :D

Well some people actually take recommendations and advice seriously instead of just throwing out a simple "yeah its cool". I'm not going to recommend something blindly because giving bad advice reflects badly on me. And even though it's just a forum and we are all fairly anonymous, I'm still the type of person that cares about the advice I give.
So considering he still had an active subscription, I think telling him to see what the fights are like at a time of day he would normally play is sound advice.
(Plus, if someone is holding a soda they bought and asks you if it tastes good, wouldn't you tell them to just try it?)

This.
Thanks. Any other smart-ass comments?

I've been going around on the same thoughts as I'm about to run out of card time.
Here's the way I see it ( playing as VS ):
I mostly play support. I've never been good at front on fighting, so I run vehicles, Bombers, and Starfire a lot. The populations have been good enough at most instant actions to keep me there until the Continent caps or collapses with available spaces in the 80-90 range most times. Last night I saw a low 40s and I've heard reports of poplocks but haven't seen 'em myself.
I'm still having fun. There are easily 4-5 full squads worth of folks on a side in most fights I've been in and that's plenty. The CR5s have even been fairly non-pissy lately.

99% of the people who ask what the pops are like aren't subscribed, because being so makes it easy to find out for yourself.
Edit: But I will add we've found out for sure PS:N won't be out for a few months, so if you sub for just trying to get access to beta, you can wait a while

I think the real question is, are the people you enjoy playing with subbed? The game's still got life in it (as noted in the other threads exactly like this one) but you really have to make your own fun, now more than ever.
There are a few people who seem to be able to have fun running around on their own, or in unorganized zerg squads, but I honestly don't know how they can find it fun at all. The way the game is now (and has been for the past couple years) you need to find a group of players who you enjoy playing with, and you'll enjoy the game more or less no matter what; because of the people you're playing with...
