SOE Fan Faire and Planetside 2? [Archive]

Well I started the E3 thread so why not start a Fan Faire thread since it is less than a month away. :)

Lets hope we get to see some Planetside 2/Next news there.

I was browsing Twitter and saw that Margaret Krohn(PurrfectStorm) aka Luperza is going to the Fan Faire. Since she is a part of the development team for Planetside 2 that could always be a good sign?

Maybe not a trailer but a official announcement and some screenshots or info would be nice. :)

Nice. I hope that means some news will come out. I thought I saw her tweet something about "Free Realms" (as working in development on that as well) and writing quest lore (can only thing EQ stuff) so I would take it with a grain of salt.

We can hope though! I should ask her via twitter, she has responded to me and Tigersmith on stuff from time to time.

You know you are a fan that is hard up for info if you are stalking developers on twitter.

Well I have to admit that after I started this thread I took a look at the schedule on the Fan Faire web site. It didn't look to promising. :(

That was the same last year, however they added some EQ:Next panels after the announcement... If anywhere, keep an eye out for the community address. If it's not in there, it's not anywhere.

I see so many people say stuff like this. Oh PS wasn't acknowledged in previous years and hasn't been for a while, why would you even expect such a thing.

Because in previous years there wasn't solid evidence that a Planetside 2 was even being worked on, now that there is why shouldn't we hope for any information we can get? Especially at a convention that caters to damn near 100 % SoE games I assume.

EDIT: I mean the Fan Faire, not E3.

It's funny because..

If there in fact wasn't going to be any PS2 news at FF, shouldn't she be allowed to tell us that? I mean, what's the point of hiding, well, hiding 'nothing' basically. It's like trying to hide an empty box, what's the point of that? For the lolz?

Which naturally leads me to overthink the situation, if she can tell us that it wont be there but doesn't. She just tells us that she cannot tell us anything, shouldn't that ultimately mean that there'll be PS2 news at FF?

Or, was the entire "hiding the empty box" phenomenon's purpose to prevent this type of theories in the first place?

Then again, because of this, that entire "box"-theory becomes moot. Because that's ultimately what's spawned this theory in the first place. So the wise thing would be to just say "It's not going to be any PS2 coverage at FF". Which MUST mean that there'll be PS2 news at FF. Period!

I'm not really expecting anything of particular either, but I totally agree with you regarding their lack of communication with their fans. I'd prefer them just saying plain and simple, "no, we're not going". It would make our life somewhat easier, I think.

They will probably announce it to a bunch of homeless people around their city. The will round up a bunch of them with the promise of food. Smed will stand on the back of a truck with a megaphone and shout at them that Planetside 2 features UNFORGETTABLE features such as 4km maps and almost as many weapons as half-life 1! Not to mention the new flight model based on the surgile warping from before but now with heavyier weapons and faster warping!

No im not expecting much either....

I think PS was only just recently was added to the Fanfair, it still isn't included on their Schedule anywhere, the official Fanfair site still just says "Planetside", AND the only info about PS at the Fanfair so far is a single fuckin tweet. Almost every other game is advertising multiple events or tournaments during the show, all these bonuses for signing up, and actually getting publicity.

I foresee a standard SOE letdown

Boy am I glad I was wrong. Frankly, even if it is an extremely minor announcement, at this point, I'm just excited to hear ANYTHING.

P.S. Did Smed not get the memo that it's Planetside 2 now? Or does Planetside Next not translate well to chinese so it's just PS2 for them?

I have decided to go to Fan Faire due to this recent announcement. Is anyone else going?

The PR for Planetside has always been crap, I know we all want more, but can we really expect more when they have already set the president of barely even letting the general gaming community know about Planetside over and over?

I mean look at CCP and Dust514's. For a game from a much smaller developer, they've made announcement after announcement, trailers, etc. and its not even coming out til next year.

This issue is most likely that Sony is a Broke Arse Joke and would rather spent money on comic books games then something that could really change the industry. As long as I get to play it though. Ill be happy :)

Unlike the article you quoted before, Smed clearly meant for what he said to become public knowledge...Though I would say we should all be prepared for PS2 not getting so much as a mention at Fanfaire despite today's "tweet".

Hah, by that argument you'd be saying SOE is brilliant when it comes to efficiency in PR :D

All in all though, I would expect something similar to what happened to EQ:Next last year, maybe even a bit bigger reveal. Overall though, SOE has always been a big too much into using their player network for advertisement IMHO. I just hope this time they take a bit of effort in their promotion for the game, and air it big at some of the game shows / cons after it has been released. Even if that might mean setting the release date after e3 next year...

Heck, even without that, there's still SD comic con, GamesCom, Tokyo Game Show, DragonCon, and a few others... But e3 would do way better for promotion to the FPS market, and putting some money in TV and outdoor promotion would not be misspent money anyway...

As for those who are complaining about there only being fantasy players at Fan Faire, you are quite wrong. About a third of the populace is usually from Star Wars anyhow, and there's usually even a couple of Station Pass / ex-MxO / Planetside players around there, and lets not forget that DCUO will also join this year.

Yea, I agree. After having SOE stonewall on the subject of Planetside NEXT at E3 I didn't have much hope, it's awesome to hear something.

Frankly, I'll be overjoyed if they confirm the Vanu are still a playable side, or that the game will be a first person shooter, or that the battlefield will be persistent. -.-

Also it's common sense that it'll be FPS, you know being a core element of the games design and all...

I hope it doesnt while on foot. Obviously needed for vehicles. But its just too much of an advantage on foot to not constantly switch back and forth between the views which is not good gameplay. Either needs to be fully playable in 3rd person like gears of war or strictly 1st person only so you dont "cheat" with 3rd person constantly to get an advantage seeing around corners or obstacles.

Maybe a lean button, but somethin that requires you to actually take a risk to look around corners, not the psychic style you get from 3rd person view. Unless i can stay in that view to fight too.

Aww but I so want to mention that no Battlefield 3 trailer has yet shown third person controls for vehicles. I really want to say that arcade vehicle controls are entirely unnecessary and a war crime if third person view is included again for Infantry. But I wont in the interest of staying on topic.

Speaking of which I don't see why they would choose to show stuff at Fan Faire. Just weeks after E3 when they had a booth an could have shown the world with much bigger media coverage. Maybe its because they don't have very much to show an will just be telling us a few minor things an nothing big like trailers or any of that. Aye, it's really up to how Smedley himself defines a "big announcement". It could be the announcement of the actual game itself that we haven't really seen thus far. Or it could be of some new interesting feature, Beta date, etc.

It's impossible to expect anything at this point, we'd better just sit back and relax and take whatever comes for us at FF, big or small.

I actually had the pessimistic side of me jump in with a couple of ideas. I'm starting to think this announcement of an announcement is primarily to try to get some Planetside players to Fan Faire. They'll get a few hundred buck out of us and just say "Planetside 2 will be released in Spring of 2012!" Then they will push back the release date when they arn't ready.

Perhaps some indication of the larger things they're doing differently from the original.

"next weeks" is hardly a specific time frame. Plurals, man, how do they work?

you are the kind of guy who would say duke nukem forever was in production for "some weeks" i guess...

i know what plurals are, but if you say "in the next weeks" you talk about 3-4 weeks maximum, or you would say in the next months.

I have an exciting announcement about our upcoming Planetside sequel.

So we're here to announce that we are really excited about this game. Also, we've decided to name it Planetside 2!

Also I want to let you know that while we have laid off an additional 2500 developers, we are EXPANDING the planetside project to make it bigger and better than ever before! [Pause for thunderous applause]

Now all of these additions will take some time. We don't have an official release date yet, but you can expect it.... Q4 2012-2013. We look forward to providing you more info in the coming weeks.
