So I was watching the roundtable (http://www.gametrailers.com/video/developer-q-a-planetside-2/717183), and Smed said something interesting to me. Nine minutes in, he was saying how when BF3 comes out he is going to take a week off of work. What caught my ear, was when he said that he will then want to "go back to playing PS2". Probably just making a point, but it does seem kinda like a slip. I'm certainly not jumping to conclusions, but I thought I would point that one out.

Well, obviously as the CEO he can play it whenever he wants, and he has already talked about how fun it is to play.
Still, I wouldn't be that surprised to see a beta by then

The content takes some time obviously but no where near what it takes for most MMO's. PS2 has no quests, no mobs or boss fights to design, no dungeons, no complicated AI, no big complex stories to play thru, nothin. They have to get the content in then get a beta goin to really flesh it all out. They cant balance all this stuff nor can they even get it all tweaked just gameplay wise til they get some fights goin. Beta will change things up massively.
So yeah i would put money on a beta before years end at very least.

This was my initial reaction too, but you make a really good point Reaver. I'd love it if you are right.

that was always my thoughts, now that the engine is done, once they get a map or 2 done, with an array of weapons and vehicles ingame and the overlying resources and hex regions its time to bring in some players to test how it plays.

I speculate that PS2 will be released around Q2 of 2012.
I think we might see a beta around Q4 of this year. BF3 is being released in late October so we could possibly see the beta released by then. One can hope!

Well I don't have any info what so ever but if I would make a gut guess I would guess that the release might happen around Q2 next year.

Well yeah I want it now also. but I prefer to wait for it and have it more polished than releasing some unfinished crap. :)

It's possible companies may start opening up games to beta earlier on. Minecraft has shown how helpful the community can be, when you make it damn clear that it's not the final product.

But you still have to pay for minecraft ... which I wouldn't call exactly beta testing.
The issue, most of the time, is that people simpyl burn out if open beta starts too early. On a plus side, I hope they're going to invite old-school PS players first, as it's hard to burn out after 8 years of playing ;-)
As for release date: May 20, 2012? ;-)
