I'm not so sure that is landing gear, but it would make a lot of sense to have some sort of installation for a futuristic army to rapidly deploy foward operating bases, or even watch towers.

Perhaps it really is landing gear but is just to make it look more convincing for the art side of things.

I guess we'll have to see. Looks good!

Kind of what I was thinking too... that's probably just how the building was made. Doesn't really look like any sort of "landing" gear to me.

Looks similar to how terran buildings in starcraft can move around. might be left over from "colonization" considering this is a "reimagining" of the original planetside story

During the Q&A on GameTrailers it was either Smedley or Higby who said "take note of the landing struts", so there's definitely some relevance to them.

Could just be stabilizers.

Kinda like the tower was dropped there from another ship and stabilizers were then deployed so it was rigid in on the terrain.

Oh, it's landing gear...

Think how a faction would hold the territory without some type of fortress? Hide behind trees or scrabble in the rocks? No, you establish a COP, just like the military does in Afghanistan. That is what this is, a COP flown in for defensive purposes and possibly resource mining.

in one of the qna's smed mentioned the tower landing gears. he didnt say what they were for, i got the impression they had something to do with the 'future sandbox plans'

Yah same thing as I was mentioning.

Sorry but when you said landing gear it made me think that maybe the thing had it own flight system.

Great.

I can see it now. Squad forming up vehicles all lined up, orders being handed out.

SPLAT!!

Squad respawning at the tower that just landed on them :D

If you look at the game they seem to be partially inspiring on - EVE - it makes sense.

People fight over systems in eve, often spend a lot of time/money to defend them. So I'd assume, maybe not straight away, but that's the plan for PS2. Outfits essentially equipping 'thier' sectors with towers like this one and more. It enhances the sense of 'belonging' -> keeps people engaged.

After all, what are you going to care more for, a random facility being hacked or your outfits tower you've spent a week farming materials for, being blown up?

This should make fights more dramatic, instead of calling a mass recall and hopping over to another cont.

On a side note - I remember back in PS1, shortly after release, it was mentioned outfits will be able to own facilities and upgrade them with better turrets etc.

Yeah, made me think of what they have planned for Starhawk which would be pretty cool in PS2.

OOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

WOW!

There are ressources as we know. As a sole player, you spend them on upgrades and stuff. As a outfit, you spend them on what upgrades as well. but as the empire? EXACTLY! TOWERS OUT OF THE SKY!

I LOVE THIS!

Doubt it. More to do with the resource / economy system. Probably part of Outfit Skill Tree thing as well. I wouldn't want people dropping towers left, right and centre after reaching a certain level.

dont think you can just spam towers everywhere. Propably just certain locations.

Plus, I wouldn't get too excited just yet. It sounded like this is something they might not have at launch, but rather added in later on.

I actually think its a outfit drilling tower
To obtain minerals and such
Dropped from orbit or a transport ship

It might not be a tower, it might just be a sector fight

I believe it is landing gear due to what he mentioned in the video this could be good/bad depending on how they are deployed

I personally got the vibe that it was a resource extraction tower that can be dropped from orbit to scoop up pockets of resources!

I would laugh my ass off if summoning towers from space/mothership was the new Orbital Strike.
oh look, its a column of tanks!

half the tanks gone. enemy commander somehow tells them. "You just sucked my tower." and the Rage that would most likely happen.

After listening to the creative director talking about all territory in Planetside 2 will be contested against not just facilities, I think maybe after a faction takes a certain area in the game your galaxy/mother ship will fly over and drop a base.
This would then help to defend the area as he said said, areas that are contested against are vital for your empires needs and will give different resources, so how else are we going to defend an open field that we have taken over? With a base that gets dropped that's how. Just a thought.

Okay, after reviewing the video again, I read the beginning of the trailer with a bit more attention:

"Indar Continent, Grid 17 Comm Outpost..."

If this is a Comm Outpost, does that rule out a resource outpost? Or are they one in the same? If they aren't the same, what is the function of a Comm Outpost and are there different types of towers filling different roles like Comm, Resources, Defense, etc?

Lots to cogitate about!

It's an early teaser so I'd assume most of the non-critical stuff is placeholders. Even Mossies and Reavers fly without weapons, so I doubt they'd have it down to that level of details already.

Plus, I don't see any oversized antennas, can't be comms outpost ;-)

Don't know if this has been discussed yet, for I had little luck finding a similar post.

During the watching of the interview and with the trailer running over and over in the background, the tower like building struck me a bit as odd and mechanized looking instead of a typical defensive building.

Smedly hinted or actually highlighted to take notice of "landing struts" on the center structure in the trailer running in the background. (Developer Q&A Session @ around 22 minutes (http://www.gametrailers.com/video/developer-q-a-planetside-2/717183))

To me they look like big mechanized positioning struts to keep the building in an upright position or in case if it's a drop ship/structure/tower they are with big mechanized landing struts.

They also hinted at player built bases, but I would guess that all of this will come after the core game has been released.

Maybe you will be able to construct (drop in) smaller deployables and even these small towers that Smedley hinted at, if they can get it to work for launch (and you have the resources ingame)..

Having stated that their long-term goal in terms of sandbox play and player-based economy is the dimension of EVE Online makes my mind spin far too wide ... completely destroyable bases for instance :p

I suspect these are deployable towers. My guess would be that highest skilled/certed commanders in your empire can purchase them at high resource cost to defend vulnerable areas. Possibly they 'drop in' from orbit or something.

Of course I could be totally wrong it's just pure speculation.

Oooo, outfit built mini-bases on resource Hex's could add an interesting twist to the game especially if they could be destroyed.

If these towers truly land to be deployed and not spawn out of thin air and at fixed locations. I'm guessing that the odds of being able to destroy it, by breaching it's defenses and deploying a explosive charge are looking pretty good :D

@WarChimp130
Outfit towers I really like the sound of that, having your own piece of land you will fight for and try to maintain. Having an outfit controlled drop tower, will very likely have some kind of resource bonus.

Or just give it tons of hit points too and make them good places for Infantry to try and fight off armor and air attacks, but would be killable by a concentrated tank or liberator style assault.

I would love to see Outfit owned bases/towers. This gives people more of a reason to join/stay in an Outfit to defend our land, our building(s), bragging rights, and all our shit that we do in there (hardcore 10 keg ragers duhhh!).

More importantly this would be like catnip for rivalries between Outfits across Empires; i.e. KOTOR (100% chance they're coming back) drops a base or whatnot and it pops up on Global = [insert rival Outfit here] is gonna give two shits about what they were previously doing and try and fuck KOTOR's shit up.

At the very least it implies mobility of the towers, which is very good. If nothing else they could move the towers a little bit from time to time and re-arrange the combat layout for variety.

Longer-term they could make the towers mobile by the owning empire and possibly move them around within their territory hex.

And still more great opportunities later with outfits building them and them moving them to help hold down key tactical locations/resources.

Glad they're thinking this way, it's a good thing to put in for future possibilities.

If you watch closely the frames with the outpost in it, it kinda looks like there are 2 structures. A base and a deployed frame on top of it, extending the landing gear to the ground benath. You can get a clear view for a moment when you get the cockpit camera from the magrider. Looks like there's a concrete base where the TR soldier is standing, while the PPA shot hits the metal tower landed on it. Maybe there are some predefined "landing zones" for towers dropping from orbit.

If the structure is made out of two halfs and it lands/docks with it, it might possibly be a resource node of some kind.

from what I was able to deduce it wouldn't be a "flying moving tower" more like "a tower that drops from space to create a new fighting focal point today that will be gone tmrw to increase the dynamic battlefield"

and smed said something about it during one of the interviews i think.

Smed pointed this out in one of the Q&A videos. I'm definitely thinking it's a deployed structure.
