just a small request from a vet

Would it be possible to have the Werner name back on the EU server
A healthy and good hamster this time around
If a PS dev just happens to look over this
It would be fantastic if you guys would do that

I'd actually like the ORIGINAL server names - the ones they had before Emerald/Konreid/Johari/Markov. I forget exactly what they were, but allegedly the names were supposed to be the scientists who discovered the wormhole or something like that.

Yeah, they said they are bringing back familiar base names so hopefully we'll get familiar server names.

This please. Except china instead of chingching. :P

Just say what they are. No need for fancy names.

I'm all for the original server names. Anything else would just be disappointing.

Originals were Johari, Markov, Konried, Emerald and Werner with J and M being LA, Konreid and Markov being NY right?

Johari and Markov = west coast (San Diego if you want to get specific)
Konried and Emerald = east coast (Might be wrong, but I think it was in Atlanta)

yeah should have mentioned the servers for the US, sorry about that

But yes, what about giving us the original names for the server?
It would be like coming home

Yeah, I want Werner back. It certainly didn't get the sending off it deserved, just got left as a ghost town until it was merged into Gemini

Yeah Werner would be really nice to have back in Europe. :)

THere needs to be a Werner and there needs to be a system to prioritize old PS veterans over new players. Most outfits want to be on the same server again, including their enemy outfits. :)

There was an interesting comment from smed about how ping will not effect play.Does this mean U.S. only servers ???

unlikley.

Ping will always affect play. Smed actually said it affects you less. Now take a look at planetside and its warping issues. I think what he was say is stuff like that will be gone. :)

Is the hit detection client-side or server-side? We all know how frustrating it is to get killed after you've already taken cover on your screen. The developers want to minimize the effect of lag in PlanetSide 2. Hit detection will use a hybrid model of client and server-side tracking. Physics will be handled by the client, and some other details will be handled by the server. I was told the target latency is around 100-150 ms maximum. How this would be achieved or enforced is unknown. However, there will be multiple servers, so players can choose the server with the shortest latency.

I'm no expert on net code, but iv played enough games from australia to the US in my time to know a thing or 2, and one thing is. getting killed around corner by a direct fire weapon is the result of 1 thing:

you were killed by a player who still had line of sight on you, be it because they have a high ping to the server, you have a high ping or both.

This will happen on 2 types of netcode:
Clientside hit detection. (current planet side) a hit on your client it a hit)
serverside hit prediction(COD:MW, Source engine)

the only way i know of to overcome being killed around a corner is for players to manually predict when their shot will get to the server and where that player will be when their shot gets to the server. as is the case in games like Halo or unreal....this is dated technology now, and any game not running serverside hit prediction IMO is a piece of trash.

if planetside uses serverside hit detection it wont be playable on over 100 ping, even on 50 you will still have to slightly lead your shots.

this is of course unless sony, the masters that they are at coding can overcome issues every other game has faced, perhaps? but unlikely.

warping can easily be gotten rid of, all they need to do is switch from using:
extra extrapolation(movement prediction based on current speed, and direction)
to using
interpolation (your client is at a one packet delay, and everybody's movement is rendered between the previous 2 packets your received. so there is no prediction and in most cases no warping to correct bad movment prediction.)

pretty much every game uses interpolation now, though the server tick rates on those games are like 30..not 5 like planetside.

No. Those were actually the second set of server names. All servers were renamed to that. I cannot remember what their original names were, but the lore behind it was that the servers were named after the scientists who discovered Auraxis or discovered the wormhole. I think one of the Euro servers was called Jackson.

Does anyone from beta/retail launch remember this? I swear to fucking Mohammed's gay lover I'm not making this shit up.

from the wiki:

Original servers

* Johari (Western United States)
* Markov (Western United States)
* Konried (Eastern United States)
* Emerald (Eastern United States)
* Werner (Europe)
* Jackson (Europe)

[edit] Server mergers

Shortly after PlanetSide was released, the European server Jackson was shut down, requiring European players move to Werner.
