View Full Version : Will you change your play style for PS2?

I know it's still early and we don't have anywhere near all the details, but are you planning on changing HOW you play Planetside?

I spent most of my time in PS playing as a cloaker or doing the whole hot dropper infantry/tower whore life style. I liked it for PS because it got me where I wanted to go fast and kept me in the battle at all times.

This time around though I'm really looking to do some ground cavalry/armor ops instead. Especially since they are making outdoor fighting more valid, I think it would be really fun to do mass armor movements to take over a wide open area, or mount up a large amount of Infantry in Marauders(or whatever their equivalent will be), set up a perimeter around a forested area and dismount Infantry to seize the objective.

I'm just glad to see they are giving more play styles some validity, and while enjoyed my previous play style it'll be nice to get a change out of the game. How about you, you sticking with what you know or branching out?

Personally I was always a variety of different things depending on how I felt at the time. With the skill system I am hoping to become much more specialized in a specific role. What that role is yet I'm not sure though.. I look forward to beta to try different things out to see what I enjoy most in 2.

I'm hoping with classes that SOE really makes use of it. A battle may need more of Technicians but how can we know if there's some out there already?

Something that shows of what is lacking where it is needed - classes.

I tend to just enjoy running and gunning with a bit of chit-chat so I'll be considering having my Outfit skills focusing on infantry which in return may affect how i play. Generally I'll just do anything and everything given the time. Yeah. What the hell kind of question is this? lol

This is going to be hard for me , I do mostly support since I hit BR40 and have never been much of a killer. I hope there is no BFR's but I like the Flail still and I can't kill anything when I fly so I guess it is a wait and see kinda thing for me.

I think it's pretty safe to say that the game play styles will be similar to the ones from the original, since, ya know..it's a sequel and all..

A lot of people didn't just play a general game, a lot of guys back in the old days played a focus'd play style and this newest incarnation seems to foster that. I think we will see many focus'd players who put all their skill points into one type of play style to be the best at it.

I'm sure their will be plenty of opportunities for people who want to play whatever whenever, but I personally intend on going in one direction and trying to be the best at it. I'm just not 100% sure what direction that will be yet. I'm leaning towards armor though.

Thats why I said "I know it's still early."

Nobody knows, but I know a lot of people have a general idea of what they'd like to do already.

possibly, depending on how things work. I know that for now, in current planetside I'm focusing on being more of an Empire leader and battlefield coordinator than I am a pilot, sniper, cloaker or anything else. Of course, I do a lot of hotdropping and such, but it isnt my primary focus. That said, theres a few things I'm waiting for more details on before I decide what I might like to do in PS2.

I might very well like to be a Commander in PS2, less of a grunt or pilot. Its something I currently enjoy and spend a decent amount of time doing atm in PS1.

People are "commanders" because they suck ass at aiming. I remember dozens of great players that were also far better "commanders" than anyone that's around the game today.

I tend to gravitate toward hybrid support/combat classes or lighter/speedier combatants that favour the mid range. That's medics when they get decent weaponry or recon. Even sniper - as long as you can pick up a more midrange "designated marksman" weapon instead a traditional bolt-action.

My outfit is likely to be mechanised-infantry based with a good smattering of tanks. I'll likely end up in the command tree with, depending on how much breadth you can get, skills branching to medic, MA, AV, and one of the ground vehicles.

I used to be a Reaver pilot, I'd rather give that up for the sake of neat deeper-specialisation stuff.

Not cool.. Ease up there killer.

Remember, in PlanetSide 2 a commander will be more than a glorified player with continental and global chat. There will be entire skill trees dedicated to it so it is a viable option.

I'd like to focus more on sniping in PS2. ;)

Seriously though, sniping, deployables, cloaking and commanding. 2-3 of those depending on what form they take.

Of course, that's not considering any new roles that may exist.

I've always been a sucker for coordinated Outfit attacks, I'd probably focus a lot of points into the Commander skill tree. As much as I like to killwhore, I loved doing Gen drops 10X more.

I wonder if we'll see many "Exxon-1" style outfits ala Desmo. I think they could make some really well defined support styles of play. I'd like to see Medics not only be healers, but also be able to buff team mates at higher levels to maybe give them more total HP's or a slightly faster run speed. Engies at higher levels could buff friendly vehicles with more armor and faster movement higher RoF things like that.

Like Razor said, some people can't aim. Some people like playing MMO's but rather just be able to help their friends and get satisfaction from being able to play in a support roll successfully. The guys who flew loadstars into combat, the guys who were happy just flying the Galaxy, the guy running around the CY with the glue gun. I hope for their sake's they really improve the roll of support style players. Not my cup of tea personally but they definitely are most welcome in the game IMO.

There's no choice; you have to change your playstyle from what I can tell. I'll probably still be doing some form of heavy grunting though.

And I really hope they buff rewards for support.

After hearing about the changes to flight physics, I might actually bust out my X52 and spec for flying. I would love for a AvA fighter.

I will probably also go back to my standard of sniping from time to time. :D

I changed my play style several times during PS1. Started off getting pwned as a grunt, played through a few different variations before I eventually settled into Rapid Response. I got a kick out of answering those 911 calls over global, and countering a back-hack, or taking out a gen hold.

I really got a thrill from feeling I was helping the empire in a very tangible way. When I go with the zerg, sometimes you feel that the objective would have been won with or without you. But when you hurry to a back-hacked Tech plant, search for and take out the enemy AMS with your reaver, then run inside and drop a couple of defenders before a teammate resecures the base, THATS when I really feel I contributed in a big way.

EDIT: Oh yeah, answering the OP question...I'll probably try out a few different roles, but I'll start off leaning towards a Rapid Response type role.

I'm kind of hoping the aircraft fly in a similar fashion to BF2... if that's the case, I'm definitely going to spec in air cav.

FUCK THAT! I always gave myself two options: get a good agile loadout and hotdrop with everyone else, or Kamikaze the CY (this happened most of the time)

Aye, the support guys.
They always were the backbone of every big fight. A medic at the right time healing/rezzing the right guy could change a battle a lot. Same goes for the engies, fixing a tank faster, allow that tank to get back into the fight quicker. Ive seen battles that were won and lost just because of such little things. Years ago i did a armor collum on Hossin, got 6 mags rolling together. After our first retreat we ended up having to go for a base to restock ammo and repair. Just when we headed back after our second push we saw 3 guys at our road back. They got a AMS up and a lodestar, just for us 6 tanks. Those 3 guys saved us about 5 minutes of driving and repairing, those 5 minutes allowed us to appear at Ixtab while the enemy was weak on defense. Those 5 minutes allowed me to use my 6 magriders and push into the CY while being followed by the zerg. Those 5 minutes, just saved by 3 guys sacrificing their K/D to do some repairing, got us the base. Without them, the 6 magriders would be 2 late to exploit the momentary weak defenders (actually caused by a lone cloaker taking the tower and some randoms helping him to defend it for a bit. They lost the tower as we went into the CY), propably allowing the defenders to push out and push us back to our own base.

That being said: tactically, on a continental level, everything matters. Every tiny bit. Enough tiny bits add up to be one big advantage or disadvantage, and this is the very essence of Planetside. THIS is what really needs to be kept in the game, because this made me and alot of other people come back to planetside over and over again. This is what made the game survive long enough to let SOE make a sequel. If this is lost during development of Planetside 2, then we are all just doomed.

I forgot to mention I was a badass ANT driver... I saved lots of bases under heavy siege.
