View Full Version : Transport vehicles

I saw a thread recently where someone remarked that it would be cool if troops could run out the back of a transport vehicle, like soldiers disembarking from a Chinook helicopter. I thought this was a really cool idea and I gave some thought to how it could work, this isn't so much a suggestion as what went through my head. I'm aware this doesn't really give enough tactical gameplay advantage to be worth implementing, it would just look and feel better.

Does anyone remember the transport helicopters in Battlefield: Vietnam? They had the seats that you 'lock' into when you press E (or whatever) from outside the vehicle, like with normal Planetside vehicles, this is obviously better because having guys free inside the thing when its flying can cause loads of physics/balance issues (I don't mean balance as in they would be falling over all the time :), I mean they could all be shooting out the back.)

What was different was that when you stood up from your seat instead of kicking you out it put you inside the chopper, so you could run out as a team rather than scattering in all directions. You'd need to implement a system where people could only stand up when the aircraft was landed/close to the ground. The problem with that system is it doesn't fit the Gal very well because no-one in their right mind would land it when hot-dropping is possible. But it might be a cool system for a smaller, faster, heavily armoured type dropship that has to land for people or perhaps a single large vehicle or tank (the BF:V choppers could pick up tanks, but that's for another thread :)) to disembark. I'm aware the phantasm currently has this area covered and what I'm (sort of) suggesting gives only a slight tactical advantage as a well organised squad would form up anyway and a badly organised one would scatter no matter what they landed in.

I just want you to imagine a group of transports streaming over the walls of a contested base, the landing ramps descending just as they touch down in the courtyard, and small organised groups of troopers sprinting out, disabling the CE, clearing the gates and allowing the heavy armour and main assault to break through.

Oh and this could apply to the Juggernaut style transports too :)

Kind of complicated to do for something that would not add much. You might glitches like guys falling through the floor of chopper when it moves. An would have a bigger impact on latency. It will probably work the same as Planetside 1 or have you locked in seats.

I can imagine my character physically standing in a Galaxy with other players waiting for a go from the pilot after he opens the rear. Actually having to run out the back to deploy.

A nice touch from ARMA I&II was being in a vehicle in first person view. Seeing the interior and hearing what was happening outside the vehicle was a great sense of immersion. Though they didn't have loading/unloading animations as you described.

While fun to consider, weither something such as that is feasable or even potential is yet to be known.

What I'd love to see, but probably isn't possible, is a jumping system in a Galaxy like this.

That would be amazing beyond belief, especially hotdropping a base at that altitude.

Some awesome ideas! But as mentioned probably not feasible for a game of this nature.

the furthest id like to see this go would be that the passengers can only see out a side window in first person view. that being said it would go MUCH better with vehicle entering/exiting animations, which their arent.

Funny coincidence, I just began replaying Crysis 1 tonight. That would be amazing, but probably wouldn't work in the end.

@OP that is an excellent idea, very few games have vehicles you can move around in/on, and it adds a great deal to the immersion.

For a game with such a huge emphasis on vehicles, I would like to see more details like walking around in the hull of a moving galaxy and shooting out the back. Vehicle animations will also be sorely missed, but I'm hoping they add 3rd person "enter/exit" animations in a later patch or expansion, or even a first person "slide in" animation similar to Half-Life 2's vehicle system.

PlanetSide's vehicle gameplay is already leaps and bounds above anything the competition has offered, but I'd like to see them build on what PS1 has already accomplished.
