So, creating videos for promotional purposes for video games isn't something I typically do. Infact, outside of one or two attempts that fell flat on their faces, I really don't do it very often.

This changed a bit recently, I found myself getting bored and wanting to try something new-ish out. So I thought, 'why the hell not try to do something promotional for planetside?'

So goes my first attempt currently and hence looking for advice.

What video capture software should I look at or use? I need something relatively durable, clips need to be longer than 30 seconds at times. File size for clips can't get too big, I'm on a laptop and the space I have for this isn't huge. My video card doesn't apparently like gamecam and planetside together, so thats out (I have an ATI card in my laptop, nvidia in my other machine that is being fixed atm).

I need something preferably free-ish.

I'm learning to use Jahshaka (http://download.cnet.com/Jahshaka/3000-2169_4-10542308.html) video editing software, any others like it? (Freeware and relatively useful for a lot of ways to edit clips together)

In my experience, Fraps is the best way to go. The full version will record as long as you want. However, it doesn't compress the video files, so they will be about 1GB per minute recording at 1024x768.

The best way to do it, is to have a second computer set up to do it. This is the most complex way to do it, but it wont hurt your FPS at all.

I've never heard of Jahshaka, so I can't comment on it. It's not free, but I like Sony Vegas.

thats illegal reaver...

but fraps is the way to go for recording. sony vegas is the way to go with editing.

and for the space issue: I'm not sure how well this will work but you could always get a external 1 TB HD and save the raw footage to there, once you finalize and compress it it shouldnt take up more than 500 MB for a 1 hr film no matter what format you save it under.

It's only illegal if you get caught.

I got xfire recording finally. Jahshaka doesnt apparently like avi files.

any other decent editors out there that, if not free are at least cheap?

I don't think there are any good free video editors out there. Windows Movie Maker is always there, but it doesn't like large files in size, or length. Commonly, free versions of payware come with videocards/motherboards/etc. You should check your utility discs and see if any of them have something.
