Sexy. I'm curious how NC Heavy assault is handled in PS2. I assume we will be receiving the Jackhammer but as I do recall the Flamethrower was originally intended too be the NC HA Weapon. I'm down with either however I'm excited about new Jackhammer mechanics :D

At least from this angle it looks like shit. It doesn't look like a shotgun at all. I honestly assumed they'd throw it out though tbh, it was so unpopular balance-wise.

You guy's talk as if the Lasher was balanced as a Russian gymnast. Honestly the the most "balanced" HA in the game was the MCG in my opinion

I play TR and I've always felt the Lasher was and is in a good spot. Maybe slightly too powerful in hallways, but otherwise good.

MCG is great if you get a steady 50+ fps, which I don't with a modern gaming PC.

MCG is the best HA in the game currently, why?

RANGE!
100 shots!

Having range on someone is awesome, and being able to get the first ~10 shots in one spot till it blooms is amazing.

Jackhammer has some range but nothing incredible.

Lasher has range but the accuracy is not the best at range, especially if you are having to dodge and weave enemy fire.

I love the Lasher and think it is in a pretty good spot, except I wish there was a little more damage from the Lash.. because thats what it's named after and now the Lash is quite pathetic.

Haha I remember back in 2003 or if it was 2004 when SOE released the infamous Lasher patch which made the Lasher so OP it was ridicilous.

I think it took a week or two before they released a new patch adjusting it back because during that time no one stood a chance against a Lasher user and I remember also that after a while both TR and NC started running around with one because they looted them as soon as they could. :)

Not only was it incredibly overpowered against Infantry AND Armor, it would slow the enemies computer to a crawl because it was so graphic intense. Using it was a pain because the guns flash was so ridiculous you could hardly see.

And that is when I started my now-CR5 Vanu character. And saw the username on the Vanu side: exploituntilnerfed. :D

The Vanu AAmax used to rock. Then the NC and TR cried enough that it got the worst reload timer of any weapon in the game.

absolutely. It got so bad at one point that every time the Vanu appeared on the battlefield the NC and TR would form a Truce and use their combined strength to wipe the Vanu away. It was def. a balance issue in the long term but considering the Vanu are suppose to have vastly superior weapon's technology as it is I found it kind of cool and fun!

Look at the barrel of the jackhammer. Each barrel is different, like the scatmax.

But that image is not from SoE...so kinda not interesting.

And the Dual Cycler and Quaser just dominated those areas, eh? Scatmax was hands down the best AI max.

I never really hated the jack hammer but most people do.

I really liked the shape and feel that a lot of the classic PS1 weapons had. I think that taking inspiration from that style is wise, because currently all of the guns in our screenshots and trailer all look like your basic semi-realistic rifles. Nothing wrong with a solid base rifle, in fact it could be amazing with custom attachments and tweaks to keep it fresh (a la medium assault + punisher).

When I see the mass use of "rifles" in the screenshots combined with the concept of "NC <3 shotguns" all I think of it this video:

AA-12 Fully Automatic Shotgun (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOoUVeyaY_8&feature=youtu.be)

I can't decide if I'd like the AA-12 or the Jackhammer design for the de facto overpowered shotgun. Its semi-real practical design vs iconic triple barrel epic design, in the end its all cool.

Yeah, I really hope most of the weapons look more Planetside-y than generic "realistic" shooter-y.

I will agree with you up and to the point that the Dual cycler wasn't nearly as effective at anti-personnel as it's predecessor the Burster. Those delayed detonation grenade's were hell indoors.

Yeah, I think someone said the NC were going to be more about railgun tech and less about shotguns.

I suggested such a thing a while back?

Edit: I completely blanked page 2. I liked the full/medium/tight spread options of the Scattercannon. I'd like to see that on the JH. Both would probably be fine with the right damage value.

It would be interesting if they put a degree of separation between NC and Shotguns, then they could focus more on the magnetic rifle / rail-gun side of them. Because correct me if I'm wrong but the Guass was "magnetically" enhanced more or less right? And then weren't a few of the NC vehicle variants like the Deliverer "rail-gun" powered, or was that magnets again? Well I guess Railguns ARE magnet powered so its all really the same thing.

I'd be interested to see if there is room for a Railgun style heavy assault weapon that is both cooler/more fun then a jackhammer, and is also at all balanced =). They might be able to do it...

Where does that leave some of the VS tech though? Just call them lasers or something black hole / gravity related?

edit: I guess this was said before, in this thread even.

I think so, lasers, plasma, nano technology would be on the agenda for the VS, or any other current technology that could be weaponised or concept technology.

The railgun is currently weaponised, its just still in its infancy.

HELLFISH88
2011-07-20, 04:17 AM
All Vanu technology was reverse engineered from salvaged ancinet technology so I assume it run's on Nanite's. As for the projectile themselves I would chalk most of them up to plasma and lasers as Sky said. It's essentially limitless fission which is why almost all Vanu weaponry fire energy of some kind.

New conglomerate Weapons on the other hand were developed by the resistance movement; usually using modified civilian equipment. SEE: New Conglomerate MAX unit.

Can't say I liked how NC was pigeonholed into shotguns for their heavy AI stuff, mainly thinking of Jackhammer and Scatmax.

If they're pidgeonholed again, I'd like to see some load versatility. There's so much more to shotguns than just pellet spray. The luxury of a cartridge of that size is you can get pretty creative. Not knowing how the inventory system works, I can't say how they'd manage that sort of thing but close spreads, ap and longer range (50-200 yds depending on configuration) slug/ball single projectile could be options.

I wouldn't be surprised if the devs decide to revamp the whole HA weapon class.

Having one faction with short range weapons, one with medium-long and one with spammable discoballs doesn't really make logical sense and is impossible to balance properly.

Also, I'm almost sure Vanu will get projectile based weaponry. Considering NC and TR will have bullet drop to account for, having VS without both recoil and gravity to worry about would most likely cause balance issues.

Or they could just make recoil/gravity effect VS' energy projectiles? Thinking of the Aurora's arc.

I agree though, the HA is something I'd like to see redone. They could still have jackhammers, MCGs and Lashers, they just need to work differently (the lasher most of all, I guess).

Vanu should get the maelstrom primary fire that does better damage at close range. I HAVE SAID THIS FOR YEARS. YEARRRSSSSS!!

From what we saw on the trailer, NC and TR still use projectile and Vanu still doesn't use projectile. I'm all fine with that TBH, although at times I really do envy some VS weapons. Then again, I also envy several TR weapons :D

Oh come on, there's no need for them to break HA. HA was pretty well balanced up until they "broke" the lasher. With no more third person champing the JH loses a bit of power too.

I hope NC gets away from the shotguns and more to the rail or coil guns.
Though, those could still be shotguns, of a sort. Railguns already use Sabot rounds, just load it with shot instead or a penetrator. A coil gun can simply shoot whatever ferromagnetic thing you put in it.

(also, railguns are magnetic, just not the same way a coil gun is. Google this stuff and educate yourselves)

LOL I would love to see the devs pull events like that.

NC get the Thunderer, VS get flux pod chucker, TR get quad-12.7mm guns from their deli.

Too awesome.
