View Full Version : Would a Brink style "SMART" work in PS2?

For those of you who haven't played Brink the SMART system basically allowed you to run smoothly over, under and through obsticles and surfaces in a very artistic and inventive way. For example you could run at a solid surface, wall-jump off it over some railings and then baseball slide through a low gap in one or two easy movements.
Do you think such a unique way of controlling your movement has any place in a game like planetside 2 and if not, why not? If you think planetside 2 COULD benefit from a SMART like movement system in what ways could it benefit and what uses for it can you think of?
Personally I like the idea of it being heavily restricted to the lighter armour types. An infiltrator, for example, who can slip in and out of a base or behind enemy lines without even having to use a cloak represents an interesting playstyle, to me.
I don't think Planetside 2 will be that fast paced, to be honest.

On top of that point I like where walls are an obstacle to the player. In PS1 you had to walk through the main entrance of a base. There was choke points. If you could wall jump over stuff it might make those types of defenses meaningless. (Not that the jetpack doesn't already do that for one of the classes).
I have heard a lot of praise for the SMART system they implemented though. I personally don't think it would fit.

This. While you're doing all that frippity fruity kung fu ninja bullshit and scoring cool points for neatest aerial backflip over a rock followed by a dolphin dive and sliding-on-home under someone's tank, I'll be putting my crosshairs on your ballsack with a C-C-C-C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER.

Doesn't fit in PlanetSide.

The gameplay used in Brink is a bit too fast compared to Planetside. I suppose vaulting over objects like fences and stuff would be a good thing but I don't want to see people flipping off walls and silly things like that

People stormed up a bitch-fit with people simply strafing back and forth...Can you imagine how bad that bitching would be if people were sliding and jumping all over the place ?

To me it makes sense as there are implants that make you run faster. So, in my mind at least, the ground work is sort of there already to explain and impliment that you get implants which make you a jacked-up cyberninja. That's just what I think, I'd like to see a variation on the standard choke point camp-out.

If planetside can get SMART, can we also get the ability of having completely stupid AI? sort of like the BRINK system too.

I would hope that Planetside leans a bit further toward normality rather than "jacked-up cyberninjas"
Besides, the SMART system in Brink isn't especially useful in combat. It's purely for accessing hard to reach areas and visual effects.

Sprinting in Brink... For some reason I felt it was wicked slow... like retarded slow
i would take free running over jet packs

Whoa, dude that would be just, you know, like, uh way to gnarly to like, implement in, you know, like Planetside.
Dude.

WTF version of brink have people played? in terms of walk speed and TTK brink plays very similar maybe about 30% increased TTK...sounds about the same as what they're planning on PS2.

Really? All the trailers I saw lead me to believe that it was really fast.

It wouldn't fit PS2 and honestly I found it pretty useless in Brink. Wall jumping in FPS is just not a fun experience, and it felt like they just put the whole SMART thing in to look innovative and different, not because it made gameplay more interesting.

How is this a troll? Some people seem to agree with me, unfortunately they are a minority.

A week? I only lasted a day.... The whole game (apart from SMART) was complete rubbish IMO.

What is it with the "That exact implementation wouldn't work, therefore it shouldn't exist at all" mentality going around lately?
Watching videos of Brink, I agree all the sliding around and stuff is too fast, but being able to pass under railings (not SLIDE), or climb up on rocks seems like it could fit in PS2 just fine from what we've seen of it. You'd need to tweak the climbing/ducking speed, but otherwise I could certainly see it working.

This, on the other hand, would be great.
And remember that TR guy seemingly stepping up on that rock? Hmm

Trailers are choreographed and they're usually machinima unless it's in-game gameplay footage.

Sure it could work, but considering PS is mainly about large scale battles and big outdoor areas, it would probably a bit waste in implementing it as the usage would be somewhat limited.
That being said, America's Army 3 (afaik) has no jump at all, just an option to mantle/vault certain high objects. I would figure something this simple could be doable and the system would just check for objects height for example.
Brink was a good game IMO, a solid shooter at the core and the SMART system was pretty cool. It's just like other online shooters for me though, they dont keep me entertained for long. I did play it some 60 hours and it was worth the 25€ I paid for it.

Yea, but it had serious problems at launch that could have been avoided by doing a beta / a few more weeks of QA.
By the time they had ironed out all the show stopping bugs everyone had already moved on.. hopefully PS2 will be released when it's really finished and polished up; it needs a sustained playerbase.

I've played a good amount of Brink. I would have to think something similar for PS2 would require a large amount of development time.
I wouldn't even want to have adding something like Brink's movement on the 3 year plan. It doesn't fit with the large maps and vehicle combat.

I'm not sure planetside needs to go the way of brink (which sounds like a simplified version of mirror's edge) but the ability to mantle low walls and climb a little bit, like the CoD series does, might be useful.

Vaulting over stuff would be pretty cool too, I just don't want to make a superbad character capable of porking tanks or whatever only to be stuck behind a conviently chest high wall.

The biggest (only?) reason to have SMART in PS2 is that it could be used to replace the need to jump. While Brink has jumping, it only really means anything for the small frames and wall running. Everything else is essentially just mantling.
Jumping exists to get over obstacles. Jumping in shooters also equates to bunnyhopping, even if it does screw your accuracy. SMART w/o jumping would let players get over obstacles while, at the same time, blocking bunnyhopping.
Win/Win except for spazmo hoppers and they can suck it. :)
edit: It's licensed tech and PS2 won't have it or an analogue (I don't imagine at least) so we'll have to deal with jumping jackrabbits. /sadface
