"Beer. The solution to, and cause of, all of life's problems." - H. J. Simpson

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzcEG_JoVuo

My most favorite liquid in the world. I had my best beer in Hamburg, Germany (that was tapped out of a wooden keg, I shit you not). And my life-long obsession all started with a Corona down in Cancun, brought to me from a Mexican waiter who didn't give a shit that I was only 14.

Truely, this heavenly beverage NEEDS a spot on these forums. As so I am henceforth making this thread in dedication to Beer.

In today's market there has been a heavy increase in the demand for micro-brewed beers. I myself used to work at a brewery (and brewed at home - soooo much fun and easy!), as has most my family, and have came to a realization towards the end of college that that cheap-ass beer (keystone, coors, bud, miller, etc.) really don't do justice to REAL beer (I can't wait for the hate responses to that line).

Hefeweizen is one of my favorite styles of beer - the rich wheaty taste, the beautiful golden aura it produces when hailed in the bar lights, that wonderful after-taste that leaves you refreshed with a perfect blend of citrus-ness. And I would be most critical of this type more so than any others (Magic Hat's version tastes like soap, my fav if from Trinity Bar in Providence RI). If there is one thing a girl could do to (guarantee) get me into bed would to buy me this beer (unless they're like 300lbs or something, fuck that).

My life-long love for beer will never end. Please enjoy this thread with me, tell me your beer stories :)

Questions to consider:

What do you like about beer?
Don't agree with the drinking age laws?
Where and what was your best beer?
Micro-brew or piss-water?
Is it OK to make fruit beer?

This is a FANTASTIC Thread. Nothing goes better like Beer and Planetside lol.

I may not have a knowledge like you just shown of beer. But I know a fair amount.

My Favorite type of beer is Bud light (LOL kidding, i dont drink that garbage or any other cheap beers.)

But back on topic. I really damn enjoy dark beers. Any Microbrew I can get my hands on Ill gladly be happy to try :D Some local places around which I would drink almost every day. They are soo good.

The one beer I can drink any time of the year is. Sam Adams Boston Lager. Dont ask me why. But Love it way too much. Great damn tasting dark amber beer. Which im sure everyone has had it before.

I cant wait to get home in 3 hrs to have one. damnn this thread ha

I love my Boston Lagga (accent). Seeing that I'm from the great Commonwealth of Massachusetts, I have indeed toured this facility.

A couple great points I would like to make:
-Budweiser spills more beer than Sammy Adams sells (per year)
-Their Boston Lager is one of the only American beers to have won highly acclaimed awards in Europe (I'm thinking Germany, I might be wrong)
-I have had their bottle opener on my keychain and it will remain there forever
-And I totally didn't pass on their "sample" pitcher down the line during their tasting part of the tour

A fellow masshole! ;)

In Texas now but raised in Massachusetts. Love me some Boston Lager as well. Now that I am in Texas I quite often drink Shiner beer - a Texas institution and some awesome stuff.

Some of my favorite beers are also wheat beers, I love me some wheat beer..

This week when we head out on vacation we are actually going to go on a trek to find some Yuengling in Tennessee. I've heard it's good but it's not available everywhere so I want to give it a try.

The only beers I am not fond of are dark stouts never been a fan really.

I'm a wheat beer guy as well (Boulevard out of KC makes a great unfiltered wheat, if you ever see it). Also like Bocks (Woo Shiner!) and stouts.
I don't tend to like pale ales.

When it comes to a tailgaiting/cheap shitty bear I tend toward the PBR...it at least tastes like something, even if it's still kinda shity.

An yeah it's ok to have some fruity-ness. I've had a few, like a blueberry wheat in Maine that was good. Sam Adams cherry wheat ain't bad either.

Hops are close relative to weed, thus it is a drink induced high, yay. Not to mention tastes great...

Don't agree with the drinking age laws?
18, nuf said.

Where and what was your best beer?
I like my dark stuff, so far my favorite is Ommegang Three Philosophers (look it up! http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/42/3457 ). Saranac's Black Forest and Murphy's Stout are close seconds.

Micro-brew or piss-water?
Microooooooooooooooooooooooooo! Labatts if I have to drink on the cheap.

Is it OK to make fruit beer?
Yes, one the best beers I have ever had was a cherry blossom beer. The reason it is is not above because I cannot remember the brand or can find it anyways

My favorite are dark beers. Probably my favorites are strong smoky stouts and porters. Sam Adams used to have their Scottish Ale that was my favorite (it was like drinking a good cigar), but they changed the recipe in the last few years and it's not nearly as good now. Guess it was too strong for people to like...now it just tastes like a regular brown ale. Moose Drool brown ale is pretty good for that. :)

I love wheat beers too. One of my favorite untraditional wheat beers is the Sam Adams imperial wheat. Hard to find and expensive, but crazy good (and strong, but you'd never know it).

I can't stand pilsners for the most part, unless they're mixed with sprite or lemonade. German Radler FTW!

I love Sam Adams Summer Ale, Heineken, George Killian's Irish Red and O'Fallon Gold.

In Holland, we drink alot of mainstream beer.

Heineken
Grolsch
Amstel.

And a bunch of other Dutch beers that arnt THAT popular in the rest of the world.

I do love myself Guinness.
And really love beer with tequila, think Desperados and Corona, even tho i prefer Desperados above Corona because it has a much stronger taste to it.

If I'm drinking cheap beers, I tend to go Yuengling, it's the best of the lower beers. If I'm just looking to get shit faced and really need to go cheap I drink Genny Cream Ale. It's local and cheap.

Big fan of Sam Adam's, it's generally speaking my beer of choice. I like most of their varieties. Noble Pils, Coastal Wheat, Scotch Ale, Cream Stout, Summer Ale and my absolute personal fave, Oktoberfest. I tend to prefer Fall beers. LOVE Pumpkin Ales also, Brooklyn Brewery's Post Road Pumpkin Ale is freaking awesome. It's a great spiced type of beer with this wonderful Pumpkin undertone. Only available once a year though. As far as fruited beers, I tend to not care for Berry flavored ones, but I do like some Citrus flavored Hefenweizen styled beers.

Fall beers are by far my fav's though. Cannot wait until September for when they start appearing on the shelves again. :D

This is a thread for beer. Not a thread for WATER. When we have a thread about what's your favourite body of water, and everyone else is chiming in about "Oh I love to frolick in the warm South Pacific!" you can chime in about cheap American hobo-piss. I understand that your foodstamps don't cover alcohol and, brother, I feel for you. So what I'm gonna do is, next time I see you I'm going to take you into a good pub and buy you a beer that will knock your goddamned socks off. We'll get rip-roaring drunk on my dime because I want you to touch the sky one time, and then we'll go get in a bar fight and beat the shit out of someone just for the hell of it.

With a fucking pool cue.

I don't know if any of you guys live near Denver, but there is an event there, that honestly might even be worth traveling there for. It is called The Great American Beer Festival. I just so happened to be living near there when I was 21, and it was life changing. Being able to sample beers from all over the country, actually being able to taste the differences....yeah I was never the same.

They give you this tiny little tasting glass, not much bigger than a shot glass, and you look at this tiny thing and think to yourself, "Self, how will you ever get drunk from a glass so small?" Believe me, it doesn't take long to sneak up on you.

If you love beer, prepare to move to Denver. http://www.greatamericanbeerfestival.com/

As long as you're paying I'm down. & its not like I haven't ever had "good" beer, I just usually dont buy it cause its not financially smart to buy that to take to a party, which is usually what I do. A few beers around the house then its Sam Adams etc

I being a man who has just recently gratuated college (German BS... job market is looking well for translators and future Chefs... not) have been apart of that culture solely devoted to the urine cans of Keystone. During my escapades in my Fraternity we have nothing else to drink other than 30 racks of Keystone (I refer to these times as my sad years... beer-wise :D)

The I moved off campus Senior year and finally could afford the good stuff. Moral of the story: if it's free - drink it, when you have money - get the good stuff.

Yep, because going broke buying alcohol is a totally reasonable thing to do. I don't get drunk very often anymore since i'm no longer a kid, but if I do I'd rather do it off a $6 case of Genny Cream Ale than a $15.00 case of Sam Adam's. It's more practical. I don't know why you'd want to get tanked on good beer anyways, the whole point of good beer is to enjoy it, not get wrecked and puke it all back up.

Yeah this. Those who know me in person on this forum in person can attest to the fact I never drink cheap beer ever. (Or to the fact I'm always drinking beer) Its simple, not all cheap beer is bad, but why would I want to drink something not as good as I can afford? And that has the sort of flavor I enjoy?

To each his own I guess, but if a beer is $6 a case (unless you confused on how many are in a case, because if its 12oz bottles its 24) I'm not going near it.

Don't get me wrong, I don't drink cheap beer very often but I also don't get drunk very often. Usually I drink 2 or 3 and call it a day. Usually with dinner or when I'm watching sports. But if I know I'm going to be drinking that heavily, I'd rather drink something cheaper. Half the reason is because the more expensive beers seem to fill me up faster and it just becomes an issue of not being able to get it down fast enough without feeling sick.

Cheap beer goes down easy, some of those other heavier beers that taste good just seem to give me gut rot if I drink them too fast. Very filling.

I don't get drunk on cheap beer. I can literally drink two cases of MGD and not feel a thing (except the urge to take a huge fucking piss). It is physiologically impossible for me. Between weight, body mass index, and metabolism (and also the fact that for fourteen-fifteen years I've had nothing but real beer), it would probably take a couple hundred bucks worth of shitty beer.

I joined the army when I was 18, and directly moved to Germany, where you can drink at 18. So 2 and a half years I spent in Germany sampling various beers and marrying one of the various women, I am spoiled.

Last week I went thru about 3 20-racks of beer. We have a Zoigl brewery not far from here, they make some fantastically good beers there.
Crystal, hefe, pils, zoigl, stout, lager, ale.. .whatever, I love them all

Also a Masshole here.. I am a devout US patriot. So much I bought stock in Sam Adams, lol.

I never thought I would enjoy a beer that was in a green bottle. I hate Heineken. Abhor it actually. But because I'm of German heritage, my Italian mother-in-law insists that I like this kind of beer.

Crazy Italians. But I digress....

I really enjoy Yuengling. It's pretty much replaced Sam Adams as my home beer, except the Summer Ale. But one beer I will never EVER turn my back on is Hacker-Pschoor Weiss. I usually don't drink with groceries, but a nice slice of lemon in a Weiss after working in the yard for a couple of hours is really refreshing. Or just as my freshly ground hamburger is coming off the grill with a nicely butter toasted bun on the side. Or even a nice juicy thick steak after working in the yard for 3 hours.

I haven't looked in the past years, but I may have to call ahead to Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburgh TN and see if any of the distributors down there carry Hacker-Pschoor. We have a few beer connoisseurs in the Dragon Wolves. If I was driving down I'd be bringing a case from NY.

Just had a night out in Coventry (England yeh, its is the middle of nowhere and a shit town but where else you going to go if your at warwick uni, student SU is crap) and my usual drinking pattern is stella artois for pre-pre drinks. Absinthe (70%) and stella for pre drinks, and then when i get to a club, I ashamed to say its VK orange all the way, dunno if u have that in America but if you don't, just imagine the girliest drink possible and that's what i drink when i get to a club, I'm usually off my face from the several shots of absinthe by that point anyway. But hey, VK orange is delicious so whatever :)

The Hammer from Rock Bottom is pretty awesome. It looks like a red ale, smells like a hop yard, and packs a hell of a hoppy flavor. And its 8.1%. I just had some down at the Long Beach location recently, it was pretty damn refreshing.

This is coming from a guy that doesn't think Arrogant Bastard is as bitter as advertised, so mind your tastebuds if you can't handle some bitter.

Wheat beer for me...

Aye, I love wheat beer.
Not too keen on Blue Moon though, I find it a tad sour.

Anyway, beers of choice...

Hoegaarden esp. Grand Cru
Erdinger - Weiss/Pikantus/Crystal
Leffe Blonde
Duvel
Weihenstephenar
Gulpener
Kasteel Cru

Also quite partial to a bit of fruity beer action :D
Bacchus and Fruli in particular.

My first post on PSU may aswell be about Beer i suppose...

I'll forgive you all for no one posting about this company in this thread, seeing as you mostly seem to be across the pond from me :).

http://www.brewdog.com/

Almost all the beers these chaps do are fantastic :), my personal favourites are 'Alice Porter', 'Punk IPA', 'Hardcore IPA', '5am Saint', 'Challenger', 'Tokyo*' and the older 'Dogma'.

All their beers i've tried have some serious character and flavour to them, a couple have been relatively samey, but for the most part they're all incredibly unique. You've got tastes ranging from Chocolate, Red Fruits and burnt sugar (in Alice Porter) to things like Pineapple, Grapefruit, Mango, Kiwi, Lime, Honey, and finally 'Toffee-Crisp crunch' as they describe it in a video (this all in Punk IPA)...Some of their beers even go down well with alot of my lady-friends who tend not to drink beer, 5am Saint and Punk IPA in particular result in a response along the lines of "Oh wow!".

The strengths of their beers range from 1.1%, called Nanny State, to 55%, called The End of History, you can no longer get any of this though, however Tactical Nuclear Penguin and Sink The Bismark! are 32% and 41% respectively, and both are pretty awesome stuff...

They're still a very small brewery but have a HUGE reputation in the UK and on beer-blogs, so they currently struggle to meet the demand for their beer, making it hard to acquire outside of the UK. So your best bet for buying it, is to just buy it from their online shop...I think they ship abroad, but it'll probably be quite an expensive postage.

Although drinking these beers has kinda ruined alot of the more generic, more accessible beers in pubs'n'clubs haha :(

EDIT: "Delivery to European countries is £25 for up to 24 bottles.
Delivery to the rest of the world is £60 for up to 24 bottles."

Yeah...£60 for delivery, then beer price on top of that for the US...Damn...

Cambridge (UK) summer real ale festival this week! About to head down for the third time :) :)

200 beers and ales from over 100 brewerys (plus ciders, mead, wine, belgium beers) all in a big tent out on the field.

It's english summer weather at 24c so i'm sticking to the pale beers and working the hoppy end of the spectrum. Though I did tuck into a couple of awesome porters when it was a bit cooler the other evening there.

It's a good day for beer-kind.

Just something to add, sort of off topic, but on the topic of beer. My home town of Memphis has had a local brewery pop up in the past few years, and if you know anything about Memphis, Tn, you know that we have some of the best water in the country. Well, I can attest that Ghost River is one of the best beers in the country(imo of course). I think it has to do with the water.

Also sick of the west coasts obsession with ipa's! But to each their own.

'cause they are yummmy!
Long ago I remember a Cave Creek Chili Beer with a jalapeno in the bottom, not sure if it related to that habenaro beer or not.

LOVE's me some West Coast IPA's and Double IPA's.
Russian River Brewing's "Pliny the Elder" is tops
Lagunitas' "Hop Stoopid" and "IPA" and "Little sump'n sump'n" + others
Bear Republic "Racer 5" and "Racer X"

Others of course, like the (California Coors) - Sierra Nevada Pale Ale

When out to eat if they don't have the local stuff I will get a Fat Tire, or Sam Adams. If Mexican food then a Negra Modelo (had it on tap for the first time the other day holy shit good stuff sooo much better than the bottle).

Smithwick's Irish Ale is my #1, with Guinness a close second.

From my time in Wisconsin I grew to like Spotted Cow.

When I'm in my home state of Texas I drink Shiner.

When I want something a bit different I prefer Hoegaarden.

And here in Seattle there's a little local brewery called the Black Raven that has an awesome IPA. In fact all their beers are great. Love the Raven.

If y'all are coming up for PAX Prime you should hit the Raven. Their Trickster IPA (http://www.blackravenbrewing.com/beers.htm) is fantastic. It's also 7% alcohol by volume and a few others are in the 9% range so watch out. Only takes a few pints to get into trouble. They sell growlers too, so you can get a few jugs of it and then take it back to PAX to add to the festivities.

The Raven is a good spot in Redmond. Reasonably classy place that is usually occupied by business professionals in the late 20's to 30's. Other than that there's an Irish pub in Kirkland. There's some good places in Bellevue but it's kinda yuppie. Good dive bar on the north side of Lake Washington. After that you're either in the clubbing scene downtown or the U-district (college kids). The area is largely divided up by age/economics. College kids, clubbers, yuppies, few places in between.

I don't know of any place in this area that caters to military. You'd probably have to go north or across the sound to one of the naval stations, or go south to Fort Lewis.

I know a lot of places that cater to dead presidents though.

At any rate, here's my fave beer joints:

I'm from Mass as well, and own stock in Sam Adams, for reals, lol. Bought it for kicks on my first deployment because I couldnt drink.

I have been lucky enough to be stationed in Germany 2 times, and will have 6-7 years in Europe before I move back stateside.

Moosehead is a great beer, one of my favorites.

Here in Germany, an excellent Dunkelweizen ot ein Hefeweizen ist mein choice of drink.

They have:
Radlers (Rad=Bike.. A gasthaus was running out of drinks to offer to passing/stopping cyclists, and mixed it with lemonade, and it's been a staple on my summers ever since I tried it.)
"Dirty-beer" / Cola-Weizen. It's 1/2 and 1/2 beer and coke.. different..
Seeing more Desperados and Corona over here.. I love Coronas.

I had some Kostritzer-Schwarzbier (Dunkelweizen) when I was in Korea (I bugged them to get AAFES to grab real beer.. they hooked me up, and it began selling out as fast as they couls stock it)
I love the crazy-amount of micro-brews. I travel all over Germany on a weekly basis, and Bavaria stole my taste buds with their Zoigl beers. One Brauhaus, the Büttner Bräu... The "hammer" brew for sure.

I want to make a beer thread with pictures now.....

I've actually got 4 different brews fermenting right now: porter, dunkelweizen, american wheat, and a variation on the red ale I brought to E3. Each of those should be pretty substantial, but the dunkel and wheat are volatile (only about 6 weeks in the bottle til they break down).

All 4 are in the bottles now. Dunkelweizen and American Wheat taste amazing, Porter is quite unique and delicious (kinda went for half-America and half-European), and the Red Ale has been reclassified as more of an Amber Ale.... we're still trying to nail down the recipe for that one.

If anyone is local to Los Angeles and wants to try them, they'll be featured at Noche Cubana on August 4th at FACLA. (http://www.facebook.com/events/125743194233546/)

Former Beer manager here (store went out of business unfortunately) so I am a huge beer nerd, because of my access(sigh former access) my taste preference is all over the place, if I had a style that I prefer it'd be quads.

My top 3(no real winner, depends on the batch the age and my mood):

Btw Falcon speaks the truth of Clown Shoes, quite good stuff, I worked in Mass so it was easy to get and the price for a bomber was never too shabby.

Living in Quebec, with relatives in the countryside, I have the advantage of being able to get good stuff from quite a lot of microbreweries, including some fine limited runs (which, around here, all seem to average around 9 to 12%, I guess we like our brews on the strong side). We also get a nice Beerfest every summer, to turn kiddies into real "beer enthusiasts" (read, men), and have some memorable stories along the way :D

As for taste, I favor the thick, hearty stouts (even in summer, although the waiters at the terrace think I am a madmen), with a weakness for the Imperial ones. I also like the red and amber ales, but microbrewed ones are somewhat rare here (although the Alexander Keith's is quite drinkable in a pinch).

Oh, and Pinkie, if you are American (or Canadian even...), you might want to try to come over here, in La Belle Province, the drinking age is mostly a suggestion :)

The vast majority of good American beer gets very little distribution in Europe and with over 1800 breweries operating in the country now it's a shame, big beer keeps the goods out of Europe (well that and of course import cost is terrible.)

It also doesn't help that Germany while it still has a wonderful beer culture, it has had major economic issues in the last few decades with many breweries closing and Big Beer(think Inbev) making false promises to the gov to help out but all they seem to do is buyout and flood the market with crap.

I hear about kids taking a Bud instead of a regional wheat or lager and it makes me wish I could slap people across the ocean, our kids are kind of stuck with it, but in Europe there is no excuse!

I am hoping in the next few years to save up cash and do a nice tour around the country, I hear Bamberg has a thriving beer diversity :)

Yeah , Bavaria is still nice ;)

The Import Cost are almost Terrible in almost Every Modern Country on the Planet.

The Younger ones also dont like Budweiser(is it spelled like this ?) here. Most People drink local Beers, where i lived and were i live now(in different parts of Germany of course). But its Part of the Culture here i think to support local Products.
Sure this is a Depending on where you are, maybe it different in big City's, i cant say that for sure.

I was drinking the Péché Mortel by Brasserie Dieu Du Ciel last weekend. I really love the microbrews which come out of Quebec. Yeah its a big city thing mostly from what I hear, doesn't stop it from being depressing. I would love to some day get up to Weihenstephan, their hefeweissbier is amazing, light, complex and fantastic with food, doesn't get much better.

I recommend if anyone is friendly with a local beer guy to let them know when they have some "fresh" its incredible, usually a good price point and readily available.

Sorry for the confusion, can't say I dislike sharing a good beer with a fine lady. I was referring to the distasteful habit most adolescent and young adult males in my area have of being good drinkers with no taste (if I see another kid buying light beer, for more than the price of decent beer :evil::mad: I'll just trade him his crap for twice the amount of decent stuff, as a public service). Most women are somewhat better, probably because they actually care about the taste of the stuff they are drinking...

The gauntlet has been thrown down at this house. We're brewing 8 different beers every 10 days, and entering them in local competitions (including the triple crown for Sierra Nevada's Home Brewer of the Year award). Once the homebrew season is over, we'll be looking at getting training for an industrial 5-barrel rig and setting up a brewery.

So right now, I'm getting to drink what will hopefully be some of the best beers of many varieties this year. :) Though I did have a Ruthless Rye yesterday, quite a satisfying beer!

I'm gonna be talking about a lot of cool things here, so if you guys are interested please make some noise and tell me what you want to see!

Good video! I typed some comments as I watched:

An English IPA like Meantime can be enjoyed a bit warmer. As an IPA warms up, the flavor profile changes, sometimes helping more of the malt or yeast flavor come through (though yeast should be fairly subdued for most IPAs).

Hops actually have a variety of alpha acids and oils that are found elsewhere. Geraniol (from geranium) is an example of this. Though they do have a diversity of flavor profiles, just like their close relative cannabis.

IPAs are generally hoppier beers. Centennial hops are where I'd imagine the 1st one got its name. Its a more citrusy hop when its fresh, but hop aroma and flavor break down first, so an older IPA or one made with older hops may lack those characteristics.

That second one sounds like an IPA that is meant to focus on malt as well, almost like a stronger amber ale. Sounds like fun to me. Third one, seems alright, nothing wrong with a can if you have a glass to pour it in!

You are right about their IPAs, but porters were a gutter beer from the dreg runnings of 3 different beers which was cheap enough for porters to buy. It wasn't until much later that it was codified into a real beer style. The idea of shipping liquid across a distance is moronic, so the shipment of beer ended up being a silly process where it needed the hops to stave off spoilage. The first bit of history about IPAs is definitely correct, but I never heard that second story about the company. They could be related though, as I don't think the empire itself was directly manufacturing and shipping the beer.

I'm with you on hating industrial lager. Its piss.

I have a Neverwinter Online glass beer mug from E3 last year. ^_^

Ugh, why are you chugging those beers? IPAs are for enjoying, not for chugging!

to go on a trek to find some Yuengling in Tennessee

Yuengling is my favorite "everyday" beer. It's my go to when I don't want anything too exotic. It's just a solid, easy drinking lager. I live a block from the original Dogfish Head brewery, so needless to say, I spent a hell of alot of time there in my 20's.

I drink Yuengling as an everyday beer as well, though lately it's been a lot more Troegs. I live in PA, just over the Delaware line, so I've also spent plenty of time with the Dogfish Head brews. I like them, specifically the 120 minute, but they experiment so much that sometimes I'm afraid to try some of their beers ;P I do love their restaurant down at the Del. beaches though, their infused vodkas/rums are really good for being mainly a brewer. As good as they are though, I love Victory beers, may be because I'm closer to them :P Between the those two major breweries I get more than enough IPA's.

I did visit Troegs two years ago though, and lately I've been drinking them more often than the others. I've also been through Lancaster Brewing, Victory, Dogfish Head, Ironhill, Nodding Head, Slyfox, and a few more breweries... My brother is a huge beer nerd, he's always got a few kegs of different stuff ready and one or two in the works(he doesn't bottle anymore). Most of the tours were cool cause they were private, since he seems to know all these brew masters somehow. I try tons of different stuff because of him, and it's weird looking back on my college days of key light and natty bo cause I wouldn't touch that stuff now. I went with him to try Pliny the Elder and Younger this year in Philly, I wasn't too impressed personally but the 500 beer nerds around me were. Personally I'd be just as happy with a Yuengling, though I was glad I got a chance to try it.

All in all, I'll try any beer but for every day beer I'm good with whatever someone gives me(free beer = good beer). Yuengling for at home/any day, Pacifico/Yuengling for the beach, and I prefer stouts for the winter(<3 Ironhill Russian Imperials).

btw MgFalcon, your video was good. Informative to people who really know nothing about the differences between the beers(besides taste). I never liked IPA's but over time of trying my bros beers I've 'acquired' the taste for them. Stopped on the way home today to get some more Lagunitas Hop Stoopid and Imperial Red in the fridge :D

I never really enjoyed IPA's until I bought a Double IPA from a local brewer near me. Captain Lawrence (http://www.captainlawrencebrewing.com/)

They haven't made it in years and I do miss it. While I was in college I was all about lagers but little by little I started to appreciate ales more. Now I can't get enough of ales.

I do love their restaurant down at the Del. beaches though

I live in rehoboth beach, and most people refer to their restaurant as their "original brewery" I've noticed. That's why I said I live near the brewery. The actual main brewery is still in Milton, I believe.

They always had great food too. For 10 bucks you got 2 big slabs of local flounder, and a huge side of fries. It was enough for 2 people, easy.

A buddy of mine was stuck on magic hat for a good 2 years, back in about 2003. He wouldn't drink anything else. Not sure if that was more local, or what. I don't see it half as much these days, around here.

Honestly, some of Dogfish heads brews are the ultimate of "acquired taste". You really have to be a beer lover, to enjoy some of them. I can't remember the brew, but I remember thinking one of them reminded me of melting PVC tubing. Very "chem" tasting.

To get a bit more technical about it....

Style

BJCP Style Guidelines - Index to Categories (http://www.bjcp.org/2008styles/catdex.php)

BJCP (Beer Judge Certification Program) has style guidelines laid out for every style they recognize for competitions. If you want to learn about different styles, how they are designed, how they differ from other styles, this is the most definitive list I've ever seen. This is not a fully comprehensive list though, as many one-off beers don't have any representation except as a "specialty" beer for that style. A White IPA is an example of this, a witbier grist (maybe increased for extra alcohol) and yeast, plus a hop profile that is appropriate for an IPA, would end up being a "Belgian Specialty Ale" (16E. in the style guide). I'm excited to see a new style guide, as brewing has evolved and expanded immensely since 2008.

Yeast

To learn more about yeast, my two favorite yeast manufacturers:
Wyeast Laboratories (http://www.wyeastlab.com/hb_products.cfm)
White Labs (http://www.whitelabs.com/beer/homebrew)

Wyeast Laboratories Yeast Strain Guide and Yeast Style Guide are great resources for trying to determine the type of yeast that ought to go in a beer (based on their products). Their Pitch Rate Calculator has been an invaluable tool, allowing us to know how much yeast we're adding to each brew to be sure the yeast can properly ferment and complete a diacetyl rest so the beer doesn't taste like buttered popcorn and bandaids (especially important to get a good diacetyl rest for Belgian yeasts).

White Labs is another yeast & inoculant manufacturer. There's nothing much to add beyond what Wyeast Labs has, just different stuff available and how they present the info.

-----------

I hope that this information will help provide a much more thorough and in-depth understanding into all of what goes into making beer, both materials and process.

Next time I post, I'll have some info on Hops and Malt.

Another good video!

Definitely give us links or bottle close-ups, so its easier to track the brew down.

Quinn's Amber Ale - Wachusett Brewing Company -- http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/20/27
http://www.bjcp.org/2008styles/style09.php#1d

Celtic Red - Harpoon Brewery --http://www.harpoonbrewery.com/beer/119/Celtic-Red
http://www.bjcp.org/2008styles/style09.php#1d

Julius Echter (You'll have to find the link, I can't quite match the bottle with a listing).
http://www.bjcp.org/2008styles/style15.php#1a

Gotta get the yeast sludge into the glass with a wheat beer. Use a bigger glass and slosh a bit of the beer at the bottom of the bottle to get the remaining yeast, or kick the yeast up off the bottom before pouring by slowly rolling the sealed bottle over a flat surface (or turning the bottle upside-down for a minute or 2) until it is mixed in with the beer. It can be a bit chunky in the bottle, but it'll generally stretch out and diffuse through the pouring process.

Quinn's is definitely on the lighter end of an amber ale, but it looks like the color counts. It sounds like a light session beer, definitely acceptable for the style. Celtic Red sounds more like the stronger end of the style.

I love watching the head on the hefe slowly receding but still hold strong over the course of the video. At least 50% wheat malt had to go into it, and the rest of it is probably more wheat plus pilsner malt. The yeast is a major feature with a hefe, and the beer would taste exceptionally different with an American wheat yeast.

Hah, beer cocktails. Make a beer float with Lindeman's Framboise Lambic and some good quality vanilla ice cream like the do at Yard House restaurants!

Zymurgy, the study of fermentation. :)

I'd like to see you do just one beer, giving the name and metrics of the beer, talking about the history of the style, what its supposed to have in it, and why it is in the glass you selected for it. And drink the whole thing, talk about how the aroma and flavor change as the beer warms up, because a lot of beers gain character as they warm.

MgFalcon

I link to the beers and their website in my description section, I forgot to say that in the video lol (also any research pages I link as well).

And with this batch of the Weissen there wasn't a major yeast presence - still unfiltered but it was smooth sailing on the bottom of the bottle :/

And I'll try cutting down on how many beers I do (it'll help with longevity of the series too) I honestly can't remember why I started off with three in the first place.

Cheers!

It has been a couple years since i had the younger it is just such a zoo when it comes out, and I personally feel the Elder is just as good. It really is a bit of an acquired taste for some, that over the top citrus taste is what I absolutely love about it. I had been a fan of Racer 5 already when I first tried Pliny, so I had aquired the taste for ultra hoppy already. My first glass of Pliny was maybe the best beer i've ever had. Although I've also heard Pliny described as "Like tea brewed from Pine needles in cat piss." Strange that I can taste what those people were describing but it isn't the flavors I get from it. I think I might have to walk over there for lunch today.

All in all, I'll try any beer but for every day beer I'm good with whatever someone gives me(free beer = good beer). Yuengling for at home/any day, Pacifico/Yuengling for the beach, and I prefer stouts for the winter(<3 Ironhill Russian Imperials).
Had this conversation not that long ago. I had a few cans of bud light in the back of my fridge for literally about 5 years. When the only alcohol in my house were those beers I still considered myself out of alcohol. They came with someone for a party we had and were left overs. Eventually I had a guy helping me with some work in my front yard and gave them away. So, from my point of view Free does not always mean good.

IPA's but over time of trying my bros beers I've 'acquired' the taste for them. Stopped on the way home today to get some more Lagunitas Hop Stoopid and Imperial Red in the fridge :D

I love Lagunitas. Hop Stoopid is one of my favorites and it is too bad it is less distributed to restaurants around here than many of their others. The others aren't bad Little Sumpin' Sumpin' and their standard IPA but Hop Stoopid is so good. The thing about a lot of these as well is even poured from a bottle to a glass the flavors are just so much different than on draft. As well as was hinted at the extra hops for extra travel it does seem that the flavors are changed from the "source" to a different bar.

Having had so many of these I would say it is pretty categorical that on tap from the source is more flavorful and better than on tap from some location it has been shipped to which is better than from a bottle.

OPs Questions:
What do you like about beer?
Taste mostly. I drink it like soda these days
Don't agree with the drinking age laws?
Not really, I tend to go with the old: "If you can join the military, you should be able to drink"
Where and what was your best beer?
I would say my favorite beer is 6th Glass by Boulevard. Other good ones are Druid City Brewery's Saison, St. Bernardus, Fat tire, Three Philosophers... I could go on and on
Micro-brew or piss-water?
Both have a place. And there are varying degrees of piss water beer, so don't group all of everything not brewed by little elves in small trees, as "Piss Water". Micro-brew beers are going to be the best, and should always be considered the standard by which you rate everything (And what one drinks on a daily basis).
Is it OK to make fruit beer?
ehhhhhh... It depends. It really depends on the beer. I am not wild about fruity beers, but there are a couple I don't mind.
