There will be an abundance of us, think SOE will throw us a merit or some other type of fluff for uniqueness in PS2??
Some additional customization feature for our helmets or armor would be neat.

They already stated they will be taking care of all old planetside players in Planetside 2
Q: Several of my friends who played the original extensively are wondering if veteran Planetside players are going to see any benefits carrying over into the sequel. I know they're the first pick for beta, but is there anything else in the works? Other sequels (specifically EQ2 and GW2) have offered veteran players the opportunity to reserve character and guild names in the sequel, as well as other benefits.
Matt: We'll be taking good care of Planetside players who join us in Planetside 2.

Cool Beans!!!! A character handle reservation would be neat, along with extra customization ability, im not talking a whole lot but something.

I'd like it if people who have like the 5 year merit or older on their PS2 toon could get a special "Battle Ravaged" armor to show they're grizzled vets who have been around for a bit.

Maybe ye olde reinforced battle armors, only in high def. Though I'd argue against the 5 year merit. 2-3 years is veteran status anymore. Most FPS' are lucky to live that long before their sequel or something better comes along. Planetside is a different beast, but shouldn't be treated any differently.
Though honestly, I think we'll just be getting a unique helmet/hat if anything.

.
Primarily, anyone who played PS1 should have 30 to 60 days to reclaim thier original player name(s). I had quite a few I was fond of - I'd like to keep most - if not all.
I wish we could play TWO empires - some of my favorite toon names were in my secondary empire.
....too bad a little BR didn't carry over. PS1 players could start with 20% of their old BR. I'd like that.
As far as customization as recognition - I guess. Ideally it'd have some DEPTH to it. For example, if you (a PS1 vet) got deep into the Tank driver tree - you had more color, graphics, cammo customization options.

I agree, names should only be reserved for the first few months. If no one reclaims them by that time, they're FFA.
I disagree on playing two empires though. It will make you think about what empire you want to play and will make you loyal to the empire you choose. You can just switch servers, however.
Really bad idea on the BR carryover. This is a new game, and everyone needs to start out at level 1. I wouldn't disagree with cosmetic stuff though.

They'll let each of us pick one empire and then force us to use the original model for our characters.
Grats!

I understand where you're comin' from. IMO, a 20% BR carryover for vets would make zero difference for anyone who sticks with PS2 longterm and is even moderately hardcore. I see no harm in a small headstart for vets.
My son had his own account - so, after he moved out - I was able to play all three Empires - I could even log onto his account on his machine and run enemy tech to my primary I was playing on my PC. I imagine a few guys may run parallel accounts so they can play more than ONE Empire on a Server. Playing on the same server from TWO different PCs is a luxury I won't have again - it was rare when I took advantage of it (for robbing tech) - but it was fun to play diff Empires every blue moon.
If the cert trees are as deep as advertised - it may be all I can do to get 1, 2, 3, (or 4?) toons advanced enough to do 50%-90% of the things I want to be able to do. I enjoyed being Eng/Support, and then recerting to HA, cloaker,...whatever. I'm a little unsure how the game is going to layout as far as how much "fits" my old style and preferences ... vs .... how much I will have to stumble around until I figure outh how best to be able to fill multiple roles - depending on the battle(s) going on and my mood at any given gaming session. I'm not sure if I'll feel like I HAVE to advance multiple toons, or predominantly stay fully committed to ONE.
I hope I can change my specialization/certs as quickly is PS2 as in PS1. If not, it seems like I'll have to put in a butt-load of hours working on multiple toons.

yeah i just hope its worthwhile, ive been with ps1 since release (although not on the same account, i forget passwords and info and wind up with new mmo accounts every two years or so) but i hope i get something neat, nothign game changing or anything, but if i could wear some oldshool ps1 desgined uniforms (with updated graphics) that would be awesome.

Why do people think we deserve free shit because we played the old game? I don`t get it.

Ego. "I played the old game, obviously I'm better than you!" A sense of entitlement. Pick one. It's not necessary for SOE to cater to the old breed in any way, it's just to show their appreciation.

do i think i deserve free shit? no, and id be perfectly happy if i didnt get it. but i was a player for 8 years, and i woulndt mind something saying that. i never asked for it, in fact sony brought it up in the first place that they would at the same time the released all the other info.
its just a nice gesture that we are getting anything at all.

That's a good point - we don't deserve anything free just for playing the game for a long time. However, I wouldn't mind getting something if it's offered to me :p

Without PS, PS2 wouldn't be possible. Without the players from PS, neither of the games would exist today.

And without the players from Battlefield 2 there wouldn't be a Battlefield 3. Not sure where you're trying to go with that.

I assume he means there should be some sort of gratitude. I don't think he's correct at all. Without PS and the clusterfuck that it became there may have already been another MMOFPS but the genre was burnt by PlanetSide's colossal failure.
I'm not saying it isn't a nice gesture to show appreciation to repeat customers but there's thousands of services we all use ever day that could give a squeeze if we up and died tomorrow. Do we build on the shoulders of those who came before? Sure. Should we always pay homage? There aren't enough hours in the day. Expecting a wink and a nod because you've been around shows hubris.
Would I take some kind of recognition? Sure. I kept my old BF2 account so I got the veteran tag in 2142. I won't turn it down but there should be no expectation.

PlanetSide is essentially a future military sim. Granted it didn't do it very well, but real military units show recognition for past action.
Show the vets the respect, even if they don't deserve it.
I like how people are saying this is all about selfish needs though... especially since the only people who care most about them are the people who don't have them.
The most selfish people are the people who want.

How do PS1 vets not deserve free stuff or recognition in PS2? FFS we kept paid accounts to play and didn't get very much new development through-out the life cycle of PS1. I'd say we payed for it for sure. Not many people stuck around a paid for an account in PS1 because it is an FPS and there are many other FPS games out there that don't require a monthly fee.

would be nice to be able to distinguish the vets in the sea of players. nothin major and purely esthetic. a different skin for the armor or something like that

Without PlanetSide, PlanetSide 2 would just be called PlanetSide ;)
I'd imagine beta access will be in order if nothing else. EQ2 gave some bits and pieces to former EQ players. I can't remember exactly what you got, think it was mainly stuff for your apartment, but I do remember a title based on your EQ server. So there is precedent for in game goodies for vets.

Brand loyalty should reap rewards, simple business sense really.
I would like char name retention with the option to change and some sort of visual element.

I don't think we should get anything. I mean I won't be expecting anything. I bought the game when it came out so it appears like I've played the game for a while when in fact I just subbed on and off.
It's a fresh game. If they're good players from PS it should be obvious in the new one.
If they did give veteran players anything I'd probably just want a free item from the item store. Simple and easy to implement on the SOE side.

So give vet rewards out based on time subbed in PS1. I subbed for a long time. So I should get more freebies.

Good idea, lets carry over that! Im guessing planetside 2 will have merrits again, carrying over our terms of service time would be awesome.
On top of that, what i really want are two things: name reservation, and something that makes people see that im a vet. Natural Selection 2 got black marine armor (instead of greenish) for early pre-order guys. Planetside 2 could for example have a different helmet design, or a different color for the helmet visors.

2011-08-14, 12:19 AM
Nah... I don`t need a black helm to win.

OMG? We are not talking about winning in this thread. Please stay on topic or don't post at all
Recognition is a big part of gaming whether or not its for combat related action or time in service. Every game likes to distinguish themselves and show of something to prove it. If you say you dint your lying especially in a competitive fps. Personally I'd like to see the ribbon rack make it into PS2 with the term of service rolled over and a PS1 ribbon.
Very few games out there have a fan base as loyal as Planetside and the fan base deserves some recognition for putting up with all the crap over the years.

Yeah, I don't personally care to distinguish myself. I'm not lying, either. I also don't really play any game competitively, I just play for fun.

Nothing wrong with competition. And it usually produces a bigger player base and longevity.

If only that were actually true, we probably wouldn't be looking at/for a PS2.
But really, it's ease of play. It's why CoD and WoW are so freakishly popular. You don't need to be a 16-21yo twitch gamer to actually succeed.
