Gamescom is coming up this week in Cologne Germany! It's now been confirmed that SOE has a booth at Gamescom and there will be developers in attendance. There is also a Sony Computer Entertainment event coming up at 17:30 local time tomorrow the 16th.

i attended a lot of gamescoms and gamescons over the last few years and even did some showsupport for soe there once (for starwars galaxies in a stormtrooper costume) but everytime i asked about planetside the soe guys there wouldn´t even know the game ;-)

i really hope they take the chance and talk about ps2 this year. for the media coverage of the gamescom is huge and it´s the biggest gaming convention in europe

The MMOs will be out in force too. Guild Wars 2 continues to entice us, while Planetside 2 looks to be one of the most ambitious games we’ve ever seen.

The SOE booth is in the business area, that said, I did go there. It is a shared booth with 8 others, and they are only doing on-appointment demos for the press. While I did manage to speak with one of the Sr community people, and I showed Matt Higby where the toilets were, it seems very closed off.

Just checked prices for the trip, theres literally no difference between getting home from where i am right now, and doing a detour to the GC for 10 hours. Seems like im going, check my twitter for updates on friday or saturday, propably saturday. ;)

Basti, you would indeed be in a great position to ask questions. ;) It would be good to know more about some of the core mechanics, like:
- how health and healing will be implemented (health points or passive regeneration, and how medics fit into the implementation of choice),
- if there will be a quick-draw knife and how powerful it's likely to be,
- if anti-vehicular weapons will be locked into a single class,
- if the Sunderer (or its replacement) and the Prowler will look like proper war machines this time. ;)

We talked about quite a bit of different things. About PS2, he did confirm that the female soldier concept art meant that females are officially in the game (woohoo!), as they really want to have an emphasis on customization, and gender is one of the most basic customizations you really need to be able to do.

i can only see 2 posible reasons and i don´t like any of them :-(

first possibility: the game is years away from release and it´s just too early to hype anyone besides us.

second possibility: soe didn´t learn anything and still doesn´t care about advertising.

especially the second theory would suck big time! this game can only unfold its full potential if every gamer on the planet knows about it, and today almost nobody has even heard of ps1 and what it was capable of.

soe, please have a look at your competitors! even in germany there were world of warcraft commercials on tv in every commercial-block for several months. so i guess that was a world wide advertising campaign.
now count the wow customers... and this is a shitty game! a game with hundrets of clones out there you can even play for free.

never underestimate the power of the forc.. oehm of the advertising!

They are doing everything right. They dont know how long till beta yet, and they dont know how long beta will be. Causing a hype now could end bad. You need to release a game on the peak of a hype, otherwise you cause an antihype.

that´s all right, as long as they really start a very big hype at the right time to let everybody know about this game. they never did this for planetside before, so i am concerned.

everyone i tell about the features of planetside is totally excited about the game, but is very disappointed when i show off the actual game, because it is 8 years old and looks so bad compared to actual games. almost none of my friends has ever heard of this game before!

and i only found the game at release, beause i saw a little banner on the starwars galaxies homepage. never saw any other advertisement and even had to order the game because no gameshop had it in the shelfs. and i still consider ps1 the best (and even the only real) mmofps out there!
