Ok, I know this was touched on in the FAQ, about someone asking about sea combat, and the answer was they might possibly put it in, in an add-on or expansion later on.
So what do you think? I read in another thread about someone saying it would be cool if there were large ships, like with a captain and crew. So what about submarines, and air craft carriers? Nothing sweeter then launching high speed off a deck of an aircraft carrier :cool2: .
Or underwater bases, that could flood. But mostly commanding a sub would rule all :D.

what was the question/Comment?

That would be cool, but probably would never happen. Maybe the Boats and Aircraft carriers, but not the sub's. Id love to land a reaver or somthin in the middle to the ocean :D

All i wanna do is be able to do some overseas travelling with my galaxy! Thats all i really need. Lock continent is a target for a 4-prong attack from the north-south-east and west, that will keep the continent defenders busy!

That would be cool, though it might take away from squad based ground combat that the game is based upon. Also as of now you cannot even fly over the ocean so lag issues with adding a whole new combat style would suck. It's a good idea, but most unlikely.
And you can only enter a locked continent by HART
Weeee! A whole new set of certs. I wonder if you can get seasick?
I dunno if I'd like subs. It would also be hard on the server, doing all of that rendering under the sea. Also, wouldn't you need a harbor or something?

I dont know if someone said this or not but what about the gates? arent all vehicles powered by the gates? or is just the airborn vehicles? or am i completely wrong on both and just talking out of my @$$??:D :D

it whould be sweet if there were battleships and cruisers and carriers that would be sweet. then u can have massive sea battles. or if there was like a jet ski like craft with missles on it or a weapon of some kind.

Subs would be fun for a while.

I personly wouldn't like to see boats and such in planetside. It wasn't so much fun in BF'42 and i think it would take to many people off the ground combat, which is after all, what this game is all about.

At the very least i'd like to see an anphibious APC. or better yet, armor that has a built in oxygen supply, so that you can go in the water and not drown for five minutes in order to cross a river...
Anphibious armor:
Same stats as Agile armor but has carrying capacity of a Standard suit, with one pistol and one rifle.
SPEC ABILITY: can walk underwater for three minutes before oxygen is depleted.
Anphibious APC: 'Protector'
less armor than a Deliverer but can cross over water.
NOTE: unable to move at more than 40% speed when on water. one gunner, and cannot cross more than a lake or river, no oceanic travel.

Or you could just fly low over water in a Galaxy.

It would also be hard on the server, doing all of that rendering under the sea.
A whole sea thing would slow the servers down and probably make the necessary specs. higher with all the extra rendering. Yea it would be cool, but it wouldnt be worth it

that would be sweet if there were landing craft with a machine gun on it.
and if u could do amphibious landing and have a battle like d-day.
that would be soo cool
I have to agree, i'd much rather see more weapons, certs, implants and ground/air vehicles than see water combat implemented.

Sando138 asked for an apc that could transport people accross a river, but hey, just join the vanu, or hack a vanu craft. They can already cross over rivers wbecause they're hovercraft. :p
Hamma

No, they can't. They sink like any other vehicle after a few seconds.
As for a APC that can cross rivers/lakes. There already is one :)

Well I was wondering about what they would use as an expansion pack.
I don't like the idea of boats, though a small anphebius unit would be neat.
There are warp gates, these gates are the basis of the technology and you can't do anything without them.
This and instant travel between continents cuts out the need for boats.
But what about bases under sea.
You put a "continent" under sea, say you can't get off of it because of large choking seaweed that hasn't been cleared yet. (or whatever, something that makes it impossible to get off or far away from the "continent.") Maybe these continents are mining colonies or something. Say that the Warpgates connecting to the land continents just got reactivated.
Now put bases, tarrain, cool wierd plants, "weather effects" sunken alien ships, ancient atlantis type cities, and add different vehicles and equipment.
Now you might have a game that is a little more "tribes" (though that isn't what I am going for) because the heavy armor can't jump or swim that high, but the lighter ones could have a piece of equipment that allows you to float or swim (fly). The weapons could have different effects, and stats. You can have air in the bases, for regular combat, and physics.
Have slow undersea crawlers, and light fast under sea subs to have the equivolent of tanks and aircraft.
In other words. When/if PS gets really popular you can expand the game and possibilities by adding a few undersea "levels" for people tired of the same ol' combat with the same ol' physics.
Plus a game that expands with it's popularity is good. How many expansions do all of those other MMOGs have?
Just an expansion idea.
And I like it better then boats and all that. Because if your ship sinks, you sink with it, or you get out of it... and sink. Because Ships will have very little to do with the bases you are trying to capture. Because I just don't see a reason for it in any way.

With this being called Under the Sea I need to post this, I think it solves this issue as well
The seaweed is always greener
In somebody else's lake
You dream about going up there
But that is a big mistake
Just look at the world around you
Right here on the ocean floor
Such beautiful things around you
What more are you looking for
Under the sea
Under the sea
Darling it's better
Down where it's wetter
Take it from me
Up on the shore they work all day
Out in the sun they slave away
While we're devotin'
Full time to floatin'
Under the sea
Down here all the fish is happy
As off through the waves they roll
The fish on the land ain't happy
They sad 'cause they in the bowl
But fish in the bowl is lucky
They in for a worse of fate
One day when the boss get hungry
Guess who's gon' be on the plate
Oh no!
Under the sea
Under the sea
Nobody beat us
Fry us and eat us
In fricassee
We what the land folks love to cook
Under the sea we off the hook
We got no troubles
Life is the bubbles
Under the sea
Under the sea
Since life is sweet here
We got to be here
Naturally
Even the esturgeon and the ray
They get the urge and start to play
We got the spirit
You got to hear it
Under the sea
The lewt play the flute
The carp play the harp
The plaice pay the bass
And they soundin' sharp
The bass play the brass
The chub play the tub
The fluke is the duke of soul
The ray he can play
The lings on the strings
The trout rockin' out
The blackfish she sings
The smelt and the sprat
You know where it's at
And oh that blowfish blow
Under the sea
Under the sea
When the sardine
Begin the beguine
It's music to me
What do they got a lot of sand
We got a hot crustacean band
Each little clam here know how to jam here
Under the sea
Each little slug here cuttin' a rug here
Under the sea
Each little snail here know how to wail here
That's why it's hotter under the water
Yeah we in luck here
Under the muck here
Under the sea:D

Must...kill...Bighoss...
Anyways, underwater would take less rendering than land. The planet has no moons, right? So no tides. Make the ocean floor a little smoother than land, and basic particle effects for splash from ships. Make subs basicly air vehicles (but really sluggish) that can't go past the surface of the water. If they want (I wouldn't care), add wakes, and there you go. No bothering with trees or grass, less seperate rocks on ocean floor, less bases/towers (you know they would be widely spaced if they had them in water), etc.

Gamer-senses tingling.... something about that 'as for APCs that cross lakes and rivers... there already is one :)'.... unless he's referring to the galaxy. my point is that a big flyinggunship isn't always available, IE you havent captured (or your enemies have) a dropship center. then you have no option but to go through easily defendable pinchpoints and bridges. meaning suicide.

The deliverer can be put into amphibious mode, so you dont really need to have Galaxies to get across rivers.

Ok, like I said in the first post of this topic, it would be interesting for an expansion.
Obviously it would take away from game play now, but in year or two it would be nice.
And NeoTassadar is right. It wouldn't take much more rendering. Just flat water for oceans, and there's no windows on a sub , so you wouldn't really have to create a underwater enviroment. Maybe a view screen for a sub, and some port holes, a glass dome for an underwater base maybe? But you'd really only need grey kinda bumpy ground.
Plus they'd have to put in some type of swimming capibities, so falling off, or abandoning ship wouldn't mean death perse.
And it wouldn't be pointless. Any good tactician knows naval combat is estential to war.
For example:
Warp gates always take you the same location. A squad comes through, and can be ambushed at the gate.
Landing craft, and a naval bombardment can over come that.
Sure, there's no reason for it, but in two years when the game is getting old, it doesn't sound so bad.
Here's a scenario for it even:
A powerful weapon is discovered under the waves, left over by the aliens. Who ever gets it, wins the war. So it becomes a "sea race". Only santuary's have a harbour to build ships, and if you want to build more, you have to control a whole continent. So it'll still be a land battle, but there's reason for ships, but there won't be to many.
And submarines would definately rule all.
Crewman#1: "Captain on deck!"
Captain: "Report tactical."
Crewman#2: "2 Vanu battleships guarding the port to our sactuary habour. They haven't detected us, we're to low."
Captain: "Arm topeados. Rise...."

Big ships = bad
The largest vech in game holds 3 people for a reason. The devs dont want large super weapons. Small gunboats, jetskis, and hovercraft would be fine watercraft (NC, TR, VS in that order). Underwater bases could be scraped for floating platforms. If we can do it now, it shouldnt be hard to implement in game. Capturing said platforms could allow for oversea travel between the continents it connects(another way to get around continent lock).
I never heard about the deliverer going into an ampibous mode. Was this just an idea, or do i have to go back and reread the site? Ahhhh screw it, ill read the site anyway :)

Underwater combat would be a huge project if they wanted to do it well. Have you ever been to an aquarium? The plant life alone is enough to cause months of work. Do you have any idea how complex a coral reef would be to make?
I could take or leave water combat...I think if they wanted to add water they should add subterranean sea caves that lead up under bases and all over the continents, like those caves the Vietcong used in 'Nam, except with water.

not a bad idea Arsh.
I am just wondering how they are going to expand the game at a later date.
I feel that just adding more continents isn't going to cut it. Adding a new and unique style of gameplay would. Spacecombat, underseacombat, underground combat, combat with vegetables. It doesn't matter to me. I just hope that when and if the time does come that they expand the game. It isn't more of the same, but something new. or it might become stale.
I am still indifferent about boats.
I guess a few overwater platforms would be alright, giving added connections between the continents. But large battleships or carriers should be right out. Small boats, ok, I guess.
but everyone would have to have armor that allows you to breath and swim underwater. Heavy armor would be right out. I guess you can come up with some wierd SeaMax.
It would be unique, but I can't say that I would be playing it much.
large groups of infantry fighting underwater with some swimming capibilities. That would be cool.
But then it is my opinion.
this is years away anyway.

Ok, i've bolded my main problem with this idea. thing is, you do not win the war. winning the war would destroy gameplay. while it would be very cool, eventually one side would figure out a way to take control of this weapon and their enemies wouldn't be able to take it back. they get screwed. as for what Hellsfire said, the largest vehicles in the game (Sunderer, Galaxy) are capable of carrying a full squad plus the crew. which means pilot+gunners. (3 gunners for galaxy, 2 for sunderer) if i was going to do aquatic combat, i wouldn't just want a little tin box to sit in they call a sub that i can only see out of if i can get the periscope position... if i get a sub in an FPS i'd want something like the ones in Red Faction 1 & 2. small, sleek, with limited ammounts of ordinance, navigational gear and a nice big front window to aim my torps.

I knew when I was typing that, that there would be some ppl that wouldn't get it.
I didn't mean actually win the war. Just some fiction to hold the idea together.

I really dont want to see boats and such. What i really want to be able to do is fly from one cont to the other in a galaxy. Thats what i want:D Im sure having all air ships being able to cross the ocean is a little unreasonable, but i really think it would add a nother dimention to the game if you could fly to continents, but it would have to be balance with say, long flight times. Anyone else that would like to see that?
