I've been through two laptops already, neither of them gaming laptops and priced around 600 USD.

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. I'm looking for something cheap but not too cheap.....If I had the money I'd get a top end gaming laptop.

Need a new desktop too...

Why not put all the money into a kick ass gaming laptop and use it instead of the desktop? Get a docking station for that laptop so you can easily hook it up to an external monitor, mouse, keyboard.

How much are you looking to spend on the laptop? What form factor do you want (screen size, weight, battery life)? What are the primary purposes for the laptop?

Do you plan on getting a new desktop now or later this year?

Crator, has a good idea there too. If you are all over the place and could use a gaming laptop when you are out and about go for that. Yet, if the laptop is just for web browsing/MS office type stuff get a cheap one and get a nice gaming desktop instead.

I'm looking for something under 1k. Universal purposes, mostly gaming. I want to avoid something that overheats easily.

Desktop is for later down the road, looking for a laptop first. I mostly want the laptop just so I can take it wherever.

Right now I'm looking at this.

That laptop isn't meant for gaming as its video card is very weak. Let me look for a few laptops and I will post them up in a few.

Here is a few:

Acer Aspire AS5750G-6496 - $679.99 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834215119)

HP Pavilion dv6-6170us - $974.99 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834157876)

These will be able to do gaming, but not at high settings. I would expect nothing more then medium most of the time.

I use a dell XPS 17. I am very happy with the performance, I payed around 800 usd for it.

goto dell.com, you can spec it out to how you want. Besides a bios issue which was very easily solved I have been happy with its performance

Sadly you're not going to get much for under 1K USD. I mean nothing that isn't a few years old. I own a Clevo laptop which have been dropping in price quickly however you'd be looking at more of a 1500 USD purchase. However when you do that they have an upgrade policy at most Clevo retailers if you ask them. (That is you could upgrade the screen or something later when you have more money).

One retailer I like is Malibal. If you want a 17" then look here (http://www.malibal.com/boutique/pc/configurePrd.asp?idproduct=283). They also have a 15" on their product page. There are a lot of Clevo retailers though so there might be one located by your house.

Thanks everyone, although I'm curious what I could get with the similar money for a desktop. I might just hold off on the laptop if I can't get a decent enough one under 1k USD.

Depending on what you need you can easily get at least a Core i5 2400 and 6870 as that smacks around 95% of the laptops out there lol. When you are ready post up a thread in this section answering the questions in the sticky I posted.
