View Full Version : If PS2 is going to be F2P, what of those who pre-ordered the game?

I'm very glad to hear that it will be free to play, but I do wonder about the money that ppl have spent pre-ordering Planetside 2. Will it be returned some how?
Unless it's like, you buy the game once then dont pay monthly fees, then nevermind this thread. However I would assume 'free to play' would mean no money required to play the game.

Don't pre-order games until after details are released.
They don't actually charge you for the pre-order until there is a release date anyways.

They mean, buy once, play for free. I don't think they'd spend millions of dollars for a free game with continual updates and have a cash shop that only sells aesthetics and minor weapon stuff that is supposed to support it.

I think Free 2 Play can still have a cost to purchase the game.
If not, I'm sure someone would love to take your money

I'm guessing it's like guild wars. Buy the game. Then after that it's free 2 play.

F2P does not mean the entire game is free, you still have to pay money for the game. 49.99 as it stands I do believe right now. I will be ordering a CE if there is one, and making as many micro transactions as possible to support the devs.

Yeah buying the game would seem reasonable. Will be interesting to see what kind of content they will have in there to make money on. I just don't hope that you one year after the game is released you will feel like you ended up in the middle of a pride parade when you are out on the battle field.

More than likely this is the way they will go, am almost 100% on it.

Free to play =/= Free Download
Another interesting thing. They mentioned that there will be 1 continent at launch. I'm guessing additional continents = additional money. That's fine by me.

There's no way they'd limit the continents you have access to in terms of buying access to them.

Pretty ridiculous to think that. And IF they do this they will have a revolt on their hands.

Putting continents behind a paywall splits the population. That's a bad thing for a game that depends on critical population number. This is one of the factors that many consider to have gone seriously wrong with Core Combat. Obviously, Planetside was more sensitive to population dispersal than other games have been, but unless Planetside 2 is well past that critical population number, SOE would be wise not to split up the population.
Free to play games often have a boxed distribution in order to get on store shelves. The box will often include a few goodies, a couple of special items and a bit of digital currency for the game with a value in the cash shop equal to the price of the boxed game. Digital distributors shouldn't be taking preorders until they actually know they're getting the game.
We're trying to figure out a way not to sell content per se... We don't want to follow the "sell an expansion pack" model with this game. We want to keep all players together at all times when it comes to what they can do without paying. .

I agree with most of the posters here (and I agree with the OP's concerns); I think that the game will cost the standard $50 or $59.99, etc, and will then be F2P without any monthly subscription. Alternately, there may be a free version of the game wherein you level much more slowly and cap at like, BR10. An indefinite free trial, basically (buying the game allows you to keep your previously-made characters).
Honestly, like many of the people here are mentioning, i WANT there to be at least some fees associated with the game, because that ensures tons of content and lots of attention from SOE. i WANT this to be their big moneymaker, and I want it at the forefront of their attention.
That being said, League of Legends (which I adore) has a very good payment/free system. As long as Planetside didn't add all the "sillly" content that League has (they're two different types of games, after all) the basis upon which League is founded seems very viable.

Gotta wonder why anyone has pre-ordered the game when there is no confirmed release date. Gotta hope that SOE offer a download/email your key option.

They also officially opened the game to preorders via the company and told you what you would be getting with each version of the game. Gamestop just wants your money ASAP...

I fully expect there to be an optional subscription plan that comes with indirect perks. Faster respawn times, faster training times, reduced resource costs, increased resource gains, there's quite a list of subtle bonuses SOE could grant subscribers that won't make someones gun directly more powerful, or their armor sturdier. They're just going places faster, and more efficiently.

Just make the game awesome and charge a monthly fee. Money problem solved. If you are trying to make it more inclusive (of laggy third-world players) then I understand the low buy-in. They can be the bearers of wood and drawers of water" for the other guys.

I think the concept most people are describing but not saying is Buy to Play.
Don't say Free to Play with an upfront cost because that is not correct.

WOWWWWWW f2p?
When I first heard about ps2 my first question was about the payment module. I was seriously hoping they were not going to go the f2p route... But for some reason I knew this was going to happen. sorry guys and gals but this "planetside 2" will be nothing like the planetside we all knew and loved. f2p games fail. they fail HARD. it only works with LOL because its a simple DOTA game.
Sorry SOE but this just blew it for me. This was my most anticipated game in the last 5 years and now all I see in my mind when I think about it is a steaming pile of shit.

I'm pretty sure folks will still have to Buy A Box, there just won't be a mandatory subscription associated with said box.
Could Be Wrong.

Yes, in the past F2P games that have come out have been crap. That doesn't mean a big name in the game industry can't try it and make it work, the right way.

Yeah... I've not seen any good F2P games either...
I'm blaming WoW.
As far as subscriptions go... I see a lot of people complaining that people don't pay subscriptions to play FPS games. Did 2004 not happen, or something? I remember a lot of people paying for a subscription to Xbox Live so they could play Halo 2 back then.
The problem I've always had with F2P games is that I never know how much I have to pay for the best content-per-cost ratio. I do like Guild Wars' business model: Buy the game, play forever. If you get enough players, you get enough payers. WoW's ability to double-dip the market is unique... I blame Blizzard's high quality and great player support for enabling and supporting Activision's customer abuse.

A F2P system usually ends up costing more than a monthly system. It's very easy to rack up over $15 a month on minor purchases here and there.
