I'm taking Matt Higby to Lunch this Thursday. In exchange, he's going to answer some questions.
What would you like to know?
EDIT: Matt would like me to point out that he simply cannot answer some questions.
I have a few questions I'd like to know myself:
"Creative Director" sounds more like "Head of Game Design" than "PR". How did you get picked as The Face of Planetside 2?
How is the information mined from Planetside helping you to design PS2?
Do you have a "rule of thumb" duration for how long it will take to train to the last skill on a generic skill tree, and if so what's the ballpark figure? 6 months, a year?
Will MAX armors still be relegated to weapons platforms, incapable of support actions such as repairs (likely, given the class system) and hacking?
Speaking of hacking, will it be as pervasive as it is in PS1? Will everyone be able to, and often "need", a hacking tool or will it be something less common that is limited to one or more specific classes?
Has the resource system reduced or removed the need for equipment/vehicle timers?
What kind of balance are you aiming for with the resource system? Will a successful outfit always be able to trick out their members with the best of everything, or will the more expensive gear be seen relatively rarely? Will vehicles be more expensive to upgrade than infantry? I'd expect that over time it would work out to be about the same, given that vehicles tend to live longer than individual troops.
The numbers 500 vs 500 vs 500 have been bandied about. I'd also heard that you'd only have one continent at launch. This leads me to believe you're going to have a lot of different servers. Are you going to have a system in place to migrate characters from one server to another so I can play with my buddies' established characters, or will I need to create a new one?
Will we be able to train multiple characters on different servers in parallel, or are you sticking closely to the Eve model (IIRC) of only allowing one skill to train per player account?
I'm a Bolo fan. Will we see anything larger than the main battle tanks and Bang Bus on the ground? A Continental Siege Unit might be a bit much, but how about a 5-man tank spewing death in all directions?

- What are the main lessons learned from Planetside - where did things go right, where did things go wrong?
- How will salvaging work without inventories?
- Will entering vehicles be delayed like it is in planetside1, even without animations?
- Will implants still exist, or will they be replaced by specialization?
- How powerful are grenades and other hand held aoe weaponry?
- How do the uncapturable footholds on continents work?
I'd also love to know about dates, payment plans, stuff like that; but they've been tightlipped about those kinds of things for a while now so I doubt you'd be able to get anything out of him about it.

Wow, you lucky dog. Remember in your questions, that if a detail isn't set in their development process then he likely won't be able to answer it except for extremely vague generalities.
One question that I'd like to see answered is, what are some design concepts they are using to improve base design for indoor battles? For example, narrow hallways and stairwells get a little crowded with the numbers of players in PS1, let alone for the increased numbers for PS2.

I have a question for him:
Is he aware that at 0:33 in the reveal teaser you can see a mouse pointer in the bottom left of the screen? :lol: (Forgive me if people already spotted this, but I just noticed it just yesterday)

They mention the ability to buy items that also can be obtainable through playing the game, although nothing has been confirmed yet about microtransactions, we can definitely see that there will be indeed MT's. In saying that, if one player decides to log in the first day and purchase an HA variant , will this be possible?? Or do you have to have the unlockable main HA completed first through the time spent in game.
The way I see it atm, first day login, create a HA assault class, buy the weapon right off the bat and spend more time certing on other things. I need clarification on this. If it is possible to buy the HA variant right off the bat, wouldnt this be considered buying power.
Also, if he can answer this question, will there be any sort of premium sub at launch, maybe a year sub, 6 month sub, 3 month sub etc.
I know the game will feature mainstream weapons throughout each empire, are they considering re making HA variants for each empire instead of the trusty ol MCG, crappy JH, mediocre lasher.
Lastly, this is more of a recommendation than anything, ID like to see a maelstrom nade implemented ontop of the frag ,plasma etc. Maybe even a freeze nade ( CC ) that can effect the players abilities for 1-2 secs. Many more ideas, to many to list.
Just sayin.

Will a jump jet troops be able to also fill support roles for their highly mobile squad?
Will vehicle pilots/drivers have to wear a specific armour type?
How many people will fit in a Galaxy?
Will players be able to apply to join outfits rather than wait to be invited?
Will outfits be able to upload their own logos?
Will merits make a return?

Mosquito is his favorite. He answered this in the recent PC gamer new article. It's on the front page of the site.
Get rid of the fluff questions and keep them realistic. My two questions:
Are boomers making a return? Can we attach them to vehicles and maxes?
Is the liberator 1, 2 or 3 person?
What can be purchased with resources. How fast can you accumulate resources and what for? (Does it take 5 hours of play-time to purchase an upgrade?)
Also can you keep an updated list of questions at the top of the page so we can comment on them. I noticed some of the questions asked aren't specific enough so Higby and Smedley will dance around them. (Dropped items for instance).

Well I'm mostly content but alot of people are concerned about TTK's, spawn time, friendly fire, etc.
TTK - We have the idea of it being something between BC2 and PS. Only further we could get is specifics which are probably being worked out now, such as 3-5 shots to kill with shotgun or so.
Health system would be something nice to ask. Will we have health and armor like we did in the previous game and will any of it rejuvinate overtime as health/shields do in so many modern games.
Spawning - Mostly just the general idea of when we will spawn and how. We know that we can now spawn in galaxies and on our squad. Will there be more facility/locations to spawn and will we select these spawn locations as we did before? How long will our spawning be? Will we reenter the battle in under 10 seconds or wait a whole minute after dieing 12 times?
Friendly fire - Right now there is none in their closed testing. What are their current plans and thoughts on this in the future? Clearly there needs to be friendly fire for this level of warfare or else the clusterfuck is just rediculous. Will the same grief system from the previous game be implemented or should we expect something different?
Extra stuff
Voice - Extra voice commands(what kind of new v-commands can we expect? While on this note, what are their expectations of the in-game voice they are implementing? Personally I'm just gonna mute everything and use TS3)
Character customization - aside from the skill tree, how much will our characters be customizable? In the previous game we had the voice macros, some faces, merits/achievments, uniforms upgrades, and the BR25 customization. What can we expect from PS2 in pure aesthetic appeal of our own characters?
Consumables - Will there be anything besides medkits that can be consumed on the battlefield? Like Stimpacks.
Music - Have you heard Don Ferrone's recent work? What can we expect for music in Planetside 2?
edit-- Oh and I know Higby loves the idea of two empires duking it out then the NC taking the tower between them and making it a big three-way but I've always loved the 3empire fight on the large scale, like NC and VS fighting on one contineant and NC has more contineants and larger empire so I attack them on a new front. Will PS2 have any incentive for empires to attack the more heavily populated one? I've personally felt that the gameplay was lacking when my empire had no pop and both of the others are attacking mine. The VS got sanc-locked the other night and I felt very sad for them.
edit edit --- OH I KNEW I FORGOT SOMETHING! Smedley said something about drops. What does that mean? wtf?

Ask them why they decided to go F2P. Did they do a survey to see how much people were willing to pay for a subscription to an MMOFPS? Where did they get their information that F2P would be a better choice basically? (Word it in a nice way though that's not biased).

Mr. Higby, we know that there was alot of thought and discussion into the business model, what lead towards the decision of making the game a free-2-play model? Was this a decision decided from other MMO's/FPS games or did some other form of research come into this decision?

I'd like to know more about the GAL spawn mechanics. Compared to the PS1 AMS, what functions will the new GAL provide. How do you use these functions? Can people spawn on the GAL while in the air? Or do you have to land and deploy the GAL for spawns to happen? Will the GAL also have equipment terminals just like the AMS did?

Get him to give you an example or two of the mission system at work. How does it decide when to have the system generate a mission? When the system's generating a mission, what goes into deciding what mission to generate? What are an example or three of mission objectives? How does a commander go about setting an objective, and what tools can he use to do so? What are the incentives for players to complete missions?
Ask him about what he believes can be done to make fortifying an area in the path of an oncoming attack fun and/or rewarding enough to encourage players to do it, rather than rush into a location as it comes under attack, when it's too late to get into proper defensive positions.
Ask him about the design principles that go into designing transports. In Planetside 1, large, undergunned (especially ground) transports like the Sunderer quickly fell out of favor, since it was more firepower to load people into tanks, buggies, or personal vehicles like mosquitoes to get them from place to place. Is there a place for ground transport (instead of air transport or ground tanks overshadowing the role) in Planetside 2?
With the understanding that it's early in the development cycle and things are constantly subject to flux and design changes, what are the current classes now?
What are resources used to acquire, and how does an empire that's being driven onto its heels, as it were, function at a resource disadvantage and recover its balance?
Also, do resources apply at the individual, squad, outfit, or empire levels? In other words, who earns them, and who can use them? If they're earned at multiple levels, how does each earn resources?
i would like to know some specifics about the 'uncapturable footholds' as well. im assuming if i fly to/over an enemy foot hold i wont be able to see inside, so a raid formed there will have an element of suprise, but i would like to know for sure.
also if it is perceived that an empire has an advantage on a specific cont due to geography will the footholds remain static or possibly rotate amongst empires or even physically move?

I would like to know how many classes you can play per character as I personally want to play A medic, MAX units (UNI MAX if this is going to be in game), infiltration and sniper on my character. Can we do this straight away or do we have to be a higher battle rank to get more certs or whatever system they use for getting more classes... As I think it would suck if we are going to be limited to certain amount of classes.

Now, you can be like some crusaders on here (not naming names but we know who) and think Smed and Higby are just lying idiots, but this has been answered a number of times, and the most recent was crystal clear.

As for questions that I would like to asked:
1. How is SOE dealing with the very serious issue of a powerful Ad Campaign. We NEED Planetside 2 to become a well-known game. How is SOE going to make Planetside 2 a completely hyped-up phenomenon, such that its launch is VERY strong.
2. Tell me about combat engineering. How many non-grenade explosive items are there in the game? What about deployable turrets? It's one topic we haven't heard discussed. Additionally, will we have the ability to choose between being a mostly-engineer character who can repair anything and deploy many items, or a commando-style character with lots of combat ability and lots of combat-focused engineering abilities (such as bombs, etc)?

Mind if you get us more details on how you think spawning will work? We know the mechanics (Galaxy spawning (in air, or does it have to be landed?) and squad spawning via pods), but how do you believe this will play out in the big war?
Any details on what continents we may get for release, and what continents are removed for good? Do those continents of the old game that make a return come with the old base names as well? Will we recognice those continents by shape, geographics and clima setting, or is it in some cases just the name that stays, and everything else is different?
Could you give us any details of forgelights specifics? Does it support DX9, or DX10 and above only? (god yes please! ) What exactly is the engine capable of?
Is the reaver really a two seater these days? What controls will the pilot have, and what is the role of the second guy?
Are there any new vehicles that havent been in Planetside?
Are you a mortal, or does your hair indicate that you are in fact the god of hair, ruling over those who are not bald?
What are the plans for planetside veterans? What will we get for being a veteran? Ingame goodies, names reserved, or any other stuff?

Hello evryone! I want to know more about maxes and how they are gonna balance it.
-Will a fully specced AI max dominate all other classes one on one? (except AV max ofc)
-Will the medic face a futile end when trying to outrun a chasing max in autorunmode?
-Wich leads me to another question will there be a /seppuku suicide command so you can die with honor instead of of getting slaughterd by a max? :p
-Will higby dominate all non AVmax classes in his scatmax?
-What classes can kill a max effectivly except another max?
-Will there be timers on maxes?
-Will it cost resources to pull a max?
I have a feeling that the basefights are gonna be even more centerd around maxes since it is a class now.
Im really excited about PS2 and i hope it dosent become a total max fest just beacuse higby is a scatmax slut :D

I do not recall where it was, but Higby mentioned that an agile armor could drive anything, like in PS1.
are we still going to able to hotdrop out of mossies?
+1, change "mossies" to "all aircraft". If possible, solicit more information on the matter, such as his views on it and how it's currently used.
Is the liberator 1, 2 or 3 person?

1.In your current build are there still specific entry points on vehicles, can you seat switch from inside them, and is it instantaneous if so?

1) Will there be cloudbases or structures above the clouds, in the future?
2) Will there be eye-candies like thunderstorms and whirlpool in the sea? Or even thick fog in various landscapes like beach, forest and plain?
3) When can we see the 3-year development plan? Will you guys(devs) actually listen to the players to make PS2 better?
4) How big will the continents in PS2 become, compared to PS1's conts? Freakin' vast, I guess.(because I heard that PS2 begins with single continent first)
5) Do the devs really like the idea of having sea aspect of war?

He has said a few times fighting in the game will be determined by players skill. Ask him if this confirms no Scatt Maxes or plasma in PS2.

How do you plan to address population imbalance?
If someone is on an atv or similar open-cockpit vehicle and I shoot them in the head, do they die or does the vehicle take damage?
Can you tell us anything about new support abilities? We haven't had a whole lot of info on what sort of abilities ps2 medics or engineers might have.
How long are your development sprint cycles?

In order of relevance:
Can you confirm or deny that there will indeed be only one continent at launch? Normally there would be one or two less-used continents, to accommodate population peaks. With only one cont per server, what of the people who log onto their server and find the only cont pop-locked? Being shoved onto a different server kind of kills the persistence, let alone being able to play with friends.
It seems like factions will be much more different from each other now, with sniper rifles and at least fighters joining the empire-specific list. Are you planning on making empire-specific models for all vehicles at some point? Or at least for the Vanu, as tracked/wheeled vehicles look most out of place there.
Will there be a Hacker class? Alternatively, with there being no apparent Inventory system, will everyone (or everyone with proper certs) have a context-sensitive REK tool stashed away?
PS1's Sunderer looked out of place, being a huge truck and all. Will it be replaced by something more military-looking, like a big (maybe apmhibious?) AFV-like transport?
Does the final in-game TR MAX model still have its face exposed? As incredibly ultra-badass as that looks, it's pretty awkward for a walking, armored killing machine.
With VIVOX confirmed for PS2, will we be able to hear enemies talking, just like in APB? As irrelevant as it is, it allowed for some cool moments of glory or espionage, ad might even add a bit of fun to the cloakers out there.

I'm curious to know what sort of social networking hooks there will be. As much as I find Farmville spam to be a blight on the purity of the cosmos, it would be really nice to (where appropriate) share screenshots & videos with other fellow soldiers.
My chief concern is that it be very quick, so that our screenshots don't have the same problem we have with taking pictures with our digital cameras: namely that they sit there, not uploaded to services.
Doc, you can use fraps to record footage and take screenshots, then upload them to sites such as imgur, imageshack, tinypic, etc.

They in fact didnt. They said it would be possible this time, but they didnt decide if they do it or not. Propably depens how beta goes.

In one of the most recent interviews someone asked if players will be able to swap classes and the response was "you can change classes whenever you respawn", which was a much different answer than we had gotten before about being able to change classes whenever you want.
So my question would be, can you elaborate on how changing classes will work? Will it really be only when you spawn, will there be equipment terminals all over like in PS1, allowing us to change classes without having to /kill ourselves?
The idea that I can only change my class when I spawn (like most modern, but small FPS's) has me very worried. If we are being assaulted by ground troops and I spawn in as a grunt to counter them, but then they start sending in MAX's, I'd like being able to change my loadout (in this case class) to be more effective.

At the risk of side-tracking the question thread, I think changing class on respawn is a good answer. I don't want to see suicide encouraged, which is why I think "change class on respawn" is shorthand for "the terminals to do so are only next to spawn tubes; they're not as prevalent as equipment terminals."

The timing on the webcast is kind of a bummer. We won't be able to ask anything based on that. Ah well.
At any rate, I'm going to make some effort to rate/rank the questions based on the +1's and quotes. I'll post that here TONIGHT, and we'll use that as our interview fodder over lunch.

While I generally trust HTC (mine is a trusty "old" HD2 with Android) I strongly suggest taking another recording device, like another mobile phone. ;) You never know when your software will freeze up, or the sound may get garbed on one device's recording, but not the other one. Just sayin'. ;)
