So, that's the photorealistic sky/cloud system they were talking about in last art-themed webcast :D

Hope that system makes it into the final product. Oh guys, this game will be epic lol

no f-ing way. If that was some static backdrop, it would be impressive. But if those are clouds that react to a dynamic sun cycle....nope, my mortal brain can't process that.

Everyone is going to cert aircraft just to be closer to it. It will be like tea-time in London; every night around sunset, the battle will suddenly grow quiet, as all three factions race to the airfields and take off. Two minutes later, the skies will be filled with hundreds of jets of all sizes, just hovering there, watching the sunset.

*Hundreds of soldiers all sigh quietly in unison: "Wowwww....." *

it's pretty neat stuff... there are multiple cloud layers, each can be lit by the sun, each cast shadows, they make sunbeams, modulate naturally, get more dense and sparse as time pases, etc. right now it's all "programmer art" too, so once our environment art team gets ahold of it it'll be incredible.

Do this: Get yourself a usual PC (Quad Core, GTX 260 - 4xx), put everything on high, including this clouds, and tell us how much you lag.

Really matt, we need details on the entire technical stuff. All we know is josh saying that the game runs on Win XP. Is that indeed true? How exatly could those cloud stuff exist on DX9? Remember, Win XP does not go above DX9, because microsoft wanted to boost its crappy Vista and lied into our faces.

All I can say is... phwoar!

The great thing about modern PC games is that there's no longer the ridiculous hardware race there used to be. I'm sure PS2 is not going to need a nuclear reactor attached to your PC to get a good framerate.

Reactor? No. Liquid Nitrogen cooling system? Quite possibly. Modern CPUs/GPUs run freakin HOT.

Why, when I was your age, my home computer UPGRADED to 48kb of RAM. AND WE LIKED IT! Hard drive? Pah! We had two 5.25" floppy drives, and we were lucky to have that! You could put the OS floppy in one drive and your program in the other... you didn't have to swap disks back and forth at all. LUXURY!

(That was an Apple ][. Not plus, not E... just "2")

You could touch the CPU with your finger while it was running. The chips weren't soldered in place, so they'd slowly work their way lose after repeated heat/cool cycles. When it started acting flaky, I'd pop the cover and push all the chips back down.

I was... 10?

Good times. :groovy:

Now get off my lawn.

Do we need to raise money for a Planetside 2 Red Bull fund? How about some Jaffa Cakes?

I appreciate that SOE is going all out on PS2. They could just create a static sky dome and call it good, but no. Dynamic photorealistic clouds in an MMO? It looks amazing (from what i can tell) even before the environment art team gets it.

That got me thinking. Yes, you are right, they could go th easy way and be done with it, but why do they spend that much money and efford into the engine?

We know the engine is going to be used for EQ next as well, but it seems they have even bigger plans. Maybe they will sell the engine to others? After all, it is a full blown engine for MMOs, and that is quite rare.

I think I'm in love.

I've been saying for years that the atmosphere of a game is almost as important as the game play itself, and one of the things I disliked most about PS1 was is skies. They just didn't look real, and it only got worse with the bending. Sure, some places like Solsar looked neat with the giant sun hanging overhead, but the clouds didn't look right which in turn made the world not feel real. It was one of the things I was most disappointed in from the original alpha sreenshots of PS1 to what we ended up with. Those early alpha screenshots had a much more realistic skybox.

If this is just programmer art...WOW!

The clouds are actual objects that you can hide within. Means you can fly your little wee figher craft right into them. On top of that, they seem to affect and be affected by light in a somewhat realisitc way.

This is crazy stuff right here man, totally crazy.
really need to see that stuff with my own eyes. Wonder if they could manage to let the clouds be affected by planes. ;)

Shogun
2011-10-05, 03:35 PM
yeah, if they manage to let us fly through the clouds and disrupt them with our planes, so we can do paintings in the sky, the art team will rise from semi god status to full god ;-)

Look at how much amazing stuff CDP RED did with just DX9. It's also possible that the eye-candy will only be eye-candyish on DX10-enabled systems.

Also, Higby told me on Twitter that my spec (i5 750, 4GB, GTX560Ti) should be rocking in PS2. Considering I get great framerate in BF3 beta with damn fine visuals (too bad the game itself is meh), I'm pretty sure PS2 won't disappoint.

But of course things change when you have 100 players at once on your screen and 10 galaxies parking around and 30 tanks rolling at once, then of course 560 wont be enough im sure.

Dynamic Level Of Detail: You set a frame rate goal, and it will scale down the textures and reduce the model complexity so it matches. More or less.

When the fit hits the shan, stuff will start to look less nice, but you' might be to busy trying to Stay Alive to notice.
