So still pretty fresh news, but Steve Jobs just passed. What says you?
Me, the world is a better place because of him. Innovative.
Also, slightly poorer...
Let him RIP I just find it ironic he goes the day after the 4S is released.
I'm not celebrating but I'm not crying either.

$50 per GB of ram?
Me, the world is a better place because of him. Innovative.
If charging more for less is innovative, then sure.

I had no idea he was even ill until I did research after this thread.

A sad day, Steve was a visionary and a true innovator in the world of technology. He will be missed and there's nobody out there quite like him anymore.
And Bags, never order RAM upgrades from Apple. ;)

I would say Jobs set the highest bar for portable device standards in terms of feeling, looks, and functionality (basically everything). I'm sad to see Jobs go. He pushed for perfection, and it was only then everyone else tried. Thus, the endless 'iphone, ipod, ipad killers' and various comparisons.
When it comes to Macbooks, iMacs and MacPros:
Only buy them if you use art-related applications. If you get a mac for anything else, you are an idiot. It is only then you are overpaying. I can tell you all Adobe products and Protools 9 HD work waaaaaaay better on a mac than on PC. Also, macs can use FCP. This is all industry standard stuff. I'm not exactly sure why macs tend to work better, but from my experience, art applications just seem to work better.
That being said I own 2 macs: 27" iMac for ProTools and Adobe. MacBook Pro for ProTools. I also own 1 old gaming PC (5 years at least). Also, I have both of my macs dual booted with Windows. Yes, I'll buy a new PC in the coming months.

Bold part is a lie. My 8GB Zune came with more functionality for $5 cheaper than the comparable iPod back when I bought it.

I own 2 Macs, one iMac 27" and a MBP, also several iDevices. I have a second MBP that is my work system.
I am a Windows System Administrator for a living, in no way an artist and I love these things far more than any windows system I've ever used. I find that I am probably about 80% more productive using a Mac than a PC. At this point my PC exists only for gaming.
Doesn't make you an idiot :p
Mac's aren't for everyone, some people don't like them just because they are Macs. Some don't like them because they dont like the OSs. Some don't like them because they dont like the price.
I love all of those things (well.. I can deal with the price for Quality.. :p) - It's still funny for me to say that because I used to dispise macs when I was younger but they have come quite a long way since then. Like it or not Steve and Apple changed computing both mobile and non mobile for everyone. They are innovators that made the competition we see today with some awesome devices - no matter who's side you are on one has to agree with that.

It was black and I've never had a problem with the software. My mom has an ipod and she bitches about the software weekly.

Brown was the best color. Nice to have something besides black/white/silver and not BRIGHT COLOR like you tend to get otherwise. My dad has one and it was a really good purchase, especially with the monthly Zune subscription.
TBH, I'm not a fan of most Apple products, now that other makes have caught up a bit in industrial design I have no reason to own one (though I do own a 3GS - it's actually made me like them less, a fine device saddled in too much idiot-proofing and arbitrary restriction and good lord itunes is a shitty program).
He/they forced a lot of innovation through, some good, some awesome, some kinda dumb, some silly (to be frank, the app-ification of computing peeves me).
The better alternatives we've got to most Apple things wouldn't exist without Jobs :)

Well can't say I have ever liked Apple products. For me the iPhone was hugely overrated but I guess that is all my personal opinion and taste.
Still a shame to see anybody pass away in cancer. :(
Obviously he has done a lot for the field since I am fairly alone in my opinion about Apple products. :D :D

I still to this day find it HUGELY amusing how people can be so against Apple products. Proves that he really was a unique dude and strong personality to create that.

Apple (MAC) and PC (Microsoft/Linux) have always been in competition with each other. Apple produces quality products but the architecture is locked down. Not much modification/open source. PCs on the other hand are more open-ended and customizable. Linux being the most customizable since the entire OS is freeware and the source code is open to the public.

Don't know if that partly was targeted at me, but I never been against Apple products. I just never liked iPhone and I don't mind that a lot of other people have one. I just don't have a desire for one myself. :)
Macbook Air is in my opinion one of the coolest laptops to date. Never got around to getting one myself as I am more of a PC guy but I might get one in the future. :)

RIP Never been a big apple fan, but you have to admire his vision and ingenuity. I use a mac at work and love it, but don't see myself buying one for personal use any time soon.

I gotta say...Jobs is/was, honestly, a bit of an ass....The whole simply pretending his ex-wife and kid didn't exist thing among others.
Prime example of someone who was human. But man, he's going to be canonised.

No need to be snooty. Perhaps some people don't know this. And, it was in response to comment Hamma made.

Yea I know those things also :D
I'm an open opportunity OS user, I use pretty much all of the above at least a few times a week
It's not so much that I'm against their products than I'm against paying way more for less.

I think Jobs' philosophy and vision were two different things. I think people don't like Apple because of his philosophy. Charging more money, etc.
But his vision is what pushed the industry forward dramatically.

Yesterday I was assaulted with iwhatever advertisements and articles all day. I all ready hate cell phones (don't own or want one), and dislike apple in general.
So when I heard Steve Jobs died, I sighed loudly realizing that's all people are going to talk about now for a week.
But I do acknowledge he was quite a visionary.

Steve jobs passing is sad. Computer wise apples arn't worth it. But for the iStuff yea what they did was pretty good.
I wonder what apple will be now. I highly doubt they can top Jobs

I bought a Zune HD. Used it for a month then it collected dust for 1 1/2 years. I wish I had just got a iPod Touch instead as when I got a iPhone 4 I saw what I missing out on.

I am sad that Steve Jobs has passed.
However, in my opinion the technology he made didn't really make life better. All it did was make barely arduous tasks more convenient and give people something to brag about when they had it. Pretty much everyone I know that has an iPhone or iPod Touch/iPad has it just to have it and brag about.
Just my 2 cents, nothing against Mr. Jobs himself of course. Great guy.
It's not so much that I'm against their products than I'm against paying way more for less.
My father bought a MAC around 93ish for his business that cost him $2k at the time I think. We did not have a Windows based PC till maybe 1998 or so. I basically grew up in my younger years using that and playing my first computer based game on it (I was a console freak till about Middle school). Though I never actually bought a MAC after that initial experience. Once I have enough cash I probably will buy one or get a second hand one for cheap.

Once my laptop goes ka-put I'm probably going to get a Macbook Pro. I really want Logic Studio and Finale's UI is so much nicer on OSX.
