I read this in the new FAQ:

In terms of physical scale the game is enormous; the planet consists of ten continents each roughly 500 square kilometers.

I thought the Continents were 8km by 8km which by my math is 64 sq km.

Ten continents at 64sq km would be 640sq km on the entire planet plus the sanctuaries, so I don't understand where the 500 comes from.

Have they changed the size of the continents to 22.36 x 22.36?

Not every continent has to be the same size. All we know for sure is the total land area is somewhere within the 500-600 square kilometer area. Maybe more.

The quote states that EACH continent is 500 square kilometers, which really isn't that much distance.

That's how I read it too... and that means each continent is something around 22 km x 22 km (500 doesn't actually have a simple root, surprisingly enough.) That's actually a lot bigger than many people here expected, and with 10 continents that's a total of 5000 square kilometers of land mass to travel around. That's a HELL of a lot more than I was expecting.

and anyways the continents are not just one huge place, some are made up of tiny islands such as Cyrssor(sp?) And I also think they mean that the 500 sq km is surface area, which isnt that much with mountains and hills and what not;)

Actually that is fairly accurate. Check this out from the official faq:
There are 10 continents encompassing a gigantic amount of land, covering a total land area encompassing several hundred square kilometers. Suffice it to say, it's a tremendous amount of gaming area.

So, Hamma, it's 500 total, for all continents?

this basicly means that the continents are going to be huge/massive/gigantic................you get the drift.

I'm pretty sure it's 500 total.

8 x 8 is the maxium size for a single continent.

well if you interpret what is read in the FAQ, than that says that EACH continent is going to be roughly 500 kilometers each. I guess we are just going to have wait for some more info for a more defenitive answer...
