View Full Version : Veteran Acknowledgement

At some point in the recent past I remember Higby (or another member of the development team for PS2) saying that we, the Veterans, will have some sort of acknowledgement representing our past conflicts and involvement in the original Planetside. I am a little worried about this, mostly because I REALLY like flashy things and being noticed beyond everyone else... Now I'm not saying I want a supersuit or anything where I would have spikes and stuff shooting out like WoW armor or anything, I believe it would be preferable to many Veteran players to be noticed on a grand scale, but not to be pin pointed by enemy fire.
What I personally would like to see is a Giant Ass Cape, but in reality that would never happen; on the other hand something subtle like an achievement badge would just be too small and annoying to look for. What a reasonable suggestion would be, IMO, some bomb-ass shoulder pads, specifically designed to show our... importance and past wars we fought.
So until Higby, or T-ray, or anyone else from the dev team wants to fess up the glorious details about Veteran acknowledgements, please post your thoughts, ideas, or concerns. :)

I'm expecting to be mentioned in the backstory....
Nah I'd be content with a simple ribbon or something....
WHAT I REALLY WANT IS A MASSIVE TERRAN REPUBLIC FLAG I CAN WAVE AROUND AND PLANT ON TOP OF A BASE AND MOUNTAINS!
I imagine it will be in the form of a merit, or forum title, or something like that. Maybe an alternate weapon skin, or helmet, or shades.

Veterans don't need any form of acknowledgement. Anything in a game that is completely impossible to achieve no matter how little the will be a turn off to players.
The only "acknowledgement" veterans should care about are their exploits from PS1 being remembered by the community in PS2.

Most players in PS1 don't even remember most of the exploits from years back and you expect that to transfer to PS2?

Perhaps some cracked and broken looking armor that has been repair a few times.
A weapon with a scarf or duct tape wrapped around the grip.

Veterans get special emotes. And we get classic helms, which are graphically redone helmets of PS1 as our option.

I'd like a custom veteran watch from Tag Heuer delivered to my house personally by the hottest female staff of SOE, to lay it on my wrist and strap it in carefully, then I want them to proceed to fellaish me feverishly while I yell "SOE! YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME!" oh....
and a merit badge that drips blood from the enemies children, and boots that soak the ground with their tears.

Grizzled beards. Scars. Gray Hair. Cybernetic facial reconstruction.
Stuff like that. Things that say "They've been to hell and back. Now they're off to hell again, and they LIKE IT!"
A unique voice, perhaps by Gunnery Sergeant R. Lee Emery (who you may know as the drill sergeant from Full Metal Jacket. Yeah. HIM). Gunny Emery has done quite a bit of voice acting already, including some video game work, so this wouldn't exactly be foreign to him.
And it would be epic.

I would really like to see some visible recognition. As guys have suggested before something that shows that we are grizzled veterans of the Auraxis war; something like scarred faces, battered worn armour, merits, etc. Also really like the idea about having the old helmets as an option, feels very much like 40k's Space Marines.
Now maybe these same appearance options should be available to the masses after a year or so, once they have become experienced...

I think it's stupid how in PS you can't put your 6th annual service badge on your display -_-
If they make merits much better visible than in PS1 and make it so its actually recognizable what it stands for to people I would be content with a 7 year veteran badge in PS2.
Or perhaps something added to the armor for original PS players only. Like a sexy hip pistol holder. Some sweet digital-screen-eye-patch. A different color shield (if shields give off color). A bad ass emote that shows you smoking a cigar like you're hannibal smith. But preferably a wrist-fired-mini-nuke.

Something just crossed my mind. We now have a author doing all the story and stuff, and im guessing he stays around for quite a while (hopefully, a episodic comic for Planetside 2 would be absoluty awesome). If he really stays with us, then why not have us, the players and our outfits, be part of the backstory? That would truly be a great service for the vets, if we become part of the big picture.

Yeah lemme be some scruffy looking grampa with a cool grey trimmed beard and a really old nasty voice. Get Clint Eastwood to record voice emotes for veterans. I'd totally dig that :p

SOE has a history of rewarding you in the sequels. I don't see why PS2 would be any different.
I personally would like to see Service Ranks. Earned the same way that the Annual Merits are.
Year 01 = Private
Year 02 = Private First Class
Year 03 = Lance Corporal
Year 04 = Corporal
Year 05 = Sergeant
Year 06 = Staff Sergeant
Year 07 = Gunnery Sergeant
Year 08 = Master Sergeant
Year 09 = Sergeant Major
Year 10 = Second Lieutenant
Year 11 = First Lieutenant
Year 12 = Captain
Year 13 = Major
Year 14 = Lieutenant Colonel
Year 15 = Colonel
Year 16 = Brigadier General
Year 17 = Major General
Year 18 = Lieutenant General
Year 19 = General
Year 20 = I STILL PLAYIN YO! (or maybe 'General of the NC/TR/VS')

I'd rock out with a cape and codpiece. Srsly, though, having a big trench coat over your shoulders like a cape for vets and/or commanders specc'd out would be tight. Of course, then I'd need a cigar and buzzcut, and infiltrate Vanguards into bases...

Despite our roughly morally similar philosophies, Aractain, I must say I am insulted. Don't take this personally, because it isn't about you, but relating a bunch of shotgun-wielding, Vanguard-driving rebel fighters to Roswell aliens who got stuck in Japan during the anime boom is a transgression I cannot allow to pass unpunished. Badass shoulder pads would be key, but I doubt they would let us have ass capes :(
I think it'd be sweet if you could modify the different segments of your armor, but make the vet shoulder pads exclusive and separate from CR5 Backpacks (Which MUST STILL BE IN PS2!!)
Other veteran stuff would be cool, like free rexo still :P Or Veteran Skill Points. Maybe some decal on your vehicles, or added cool looking armor to them. And max units should have added shoulder armor or something.
Another option is to do the awesome TR Flag thing to plant on bases and mountains, if all else fails :P

Heh, fair enough. I think the flag idea was something I thought was cool. Having deployable banners are a nice novelty item that won't give vets an edge in combat but will still make us feel a bit more distinguished. That and they'll be a great rallying point for the troops!
