Both! 3rd person is great for piloting while cockpit is best for firing weapons. I'm addicted to the Helicopter's in the Battlefield Franchise and having all that sexy physics being limited too a crowded Cockpit view seems like a waste of fun.

I was sitting there trying to read it and gave up. Higby needs to use a better camera. Seems like every picture forces us to manipulate it for the secrets.

One Amp Station
-Looks like the walkways on the walls and catwalks are covered, or they are open, with "murder holes", those slots you can see through to the ground
-"street lights" protruding from base wall
- possible search lights/area illumination inside base in various places, those pale turquoise rectangles that are too small to do much else
-notable that the stairs come to a flat roof, they don't end in a door that provides a target for ground-based forces to spam from afar
-nine corner strongholds on the base wall
-note streaks in the haze from something off to the right that must be mighty tall indeed casting a shadow through said haze
-size

Two Air Towers:
One taking up bottom left corner
One on hill top center, past the central structure of the Amp Station roof

10 generic rectangular buldings inside and outside base with walls around their stairs that are on opposing corners of the roof, giving access from outside to inside via roof, and vice versa, some of which have truncated corners to make them six-sided.

Mosquitoes:

Dorsal fin/flap/cape thing
-T-tail bottom that may be part of what it lands on, making this need a very large patch of ground to land on compared to the other Mossie, if it is VTOL.

Higby already said it's only 50% textures.

And the game doesn't need full textures for beta testing, you know. They're pretty damn far along.

8 large towers on the wall
12 low buildings inside the walls. Several outside.

I don't usually post stuff because I've been so busy but have to leave a quick comment. The actual gameplay screenshot looks really amazing. It has that same "Planetside" feel that I expected from this new game. Graphics look really good and I can't wait to see the final renderings. PS2 looks like it will be a really awesome and fun game, let's hope for the best.

Game is getting closer and closer to beta, I can feel it

3rd person reticle? Don't know how I feel about that.

The massive image with dat base is good stuff. Looking at the back of the mossie and seeing that grey area that looks like something should go there. The two things it makes me think of are attachments and mid-air refueling. I really hope it's mid-air refueling (but I know it isn't.)

The whole thing looks cock of the walk and it shows why tanks are now 1 man vehicles. With that much terrain you want the population to be able field enough tanks to fill it up.

Look at the catwalk, it has a blue glow under it. Seems that the courtyard is being cut into smaller sections through additional shields. That only makes sense if the shields have limited health and can be blown through. Very cool.

That fly through tunnel looks awesome, hope you actually can fly through it for reload and that the little blue screens turn red when the gen goes down.

With a base this size there should be NO problem with having artillery in the game.

They are aiming at 3-4 year old machines so you should have a dx10 capable pc to run it.

I understand that not everyone can spend lots of cash of pc upgrade but mines directx11 capable and cost something like £300 because i bought used parts apart from the graphics card (gtx460 1gb)

Theres plenty of time before release to start saving ;)

I imagine it has multiple sections that you can attack, a bit like a territories gametype. The sheer size of it means the defense will be spread thin too.

You can see the top "foil" and it has the same tail

These 2 buildings look interesting (use the full size image from the front page for better viewing). I first thought they were pillboxes/bunkers, but if you look at their position in combination with the gates they might be the gate shield generators/ control rooms. Could also be entrances to the base sub-levels (if there still are any).

One vehicle spawn (at least for ground vehicles) could be under the central structure, at ground level it is open to the left and right (you can see 2 open gates/ arcs at the left of it with these 2 glowing monitor thingies) and "ramps" going out on the courtyard(s) at both sides.

Edit:
Doh, if you think about it those glowing monitor thingies could be the vehicle terminals. The two on the high level for air vehicles, and the ones at ground level for ground vehicles.

A Death Trap for Infantry. Way to Big! No Wallturrets? Way to few Coverspots? Unless they changed alot of Gameplay Mechanics (especialy Mobility) this will be Destroying the Epic INFANTRY Courtyard Fights we used to have in Ps1 :/
This Huge Bases will also lead to Attackers just rushing and focus 1 Entrance because Defenders will take alot of Time to Move around.

Also:
The most Hills around the Base look like you cant get up there... and where are the Trees to cover Attackers Infantry around the Base?

Are there Portals to move Quickly around in the Base?

Otherwise Im skeptical this will work out...

Don't worry too much about it. This is a work in progress. I'm sure that infantry will be given plenty of cover. The mere fact that walls are so tall already improves infantry odds, in addition to the fact that there aren't as many exposed doors for tanks and artillery to spam.

Enjoy the positives of these screen shots, but try to filter out the negatives from the "it hasn't been added yet"s.

Ya I was thinking the same thing. Still the thought of lets say 5x or even 20x the players means spawning vehicles that much fast. I wonder whether they will have multiple pads at each spawn point or whether it will simply be just that much faster. Or maybe with the new territory control system the fights wont be as concentrated, so it will be at multiple bases so it wont be that much different. So if we are right and that is 3 vehicle spawns maybe that means they are expecting 3x the population fighting at that one base at one particular time. Time will tell I guess!

p.s. look at the size of that base! What kind of base you think it is? Tech, Interlink? Might be an interlink with all those transmitter pylons.

Ya I was thinking the same thing. Still the thought of lets say 5x or even 20x the players means spawning vehicles that much fast. I wonder whether they will have multiple pads at each spawn point or whether it will simply be just that much faster. Or maybe with the new territory control system the fights wont be as concentrated, so it will be at multiple bases so it wont be that much different. So if we are right and that is 3 vehicle spawns maybe that means they are expecting 3x the population fighting at that one base at one particular time. Time will tell I guess!

Well the most vehicle spawns in PS1 has a Tech with 3 ( 2 air, 1 ground). This is a AMP station which in PS1 has 1 vehicle spawn, this PS2 AMP station has at least 4 ground vehicle spawns and 2 (may be 4 if there are 2 more on the other side of the central building as well) air vehicle spawns. That is quite an improvement compared to the original base.

I did some zoom-way-the-hell-in-and-poke-around myself. Noticed some things:


1) What is that lowest mosquito covering up? It looks like it might have a broken landing jack next to it. Looks kinda Vanu-ish.

2) There are several of those "placeholder or structure" things outside the base. Vehicle? Turret? They all seem to be pointed in the exact same direction.

for the first thing behind the Mossy looks like something base related, part of a bunker or the like, seems to have those landing strut legs.

for the second thing, no idea might just be some nice terrain additions for people to hide behind

I always flew first person in PS1, although I did switch to 3rd person occasionally to get a better view.

The flight mechanics sound like they are a lot better, broader and more dynamic than they were in PS1, so I think he should be happy. Just so long as they make it as viable, or preferably even more viable than it was in PS1, to fly entirely in first person.

The option to toggle a free look camera mode inside the first person cockpit view would help a lot, to see what's going on around you faster and without having to rotate your vehicle. I don't mind if people have the option of third person flying, but I'd prefer to not need to switch to third person to maintain a level tactical playing field.

As someone else pointed out, that looks very familiar to the support "strut" type of objects around the towers we have seen.

I pop back and forth from third person while flying mainly because the camera is fixed. Most of my air cav work is covering the rest of the squad on the ground. It would be great if they supported the TrackIR so I can keep my squad in sight in first person as I do a pylon turn around them.

Also, a massive marketing campaign is needed to fill the servers! It'd be a great shame for PS2 to fall flat on its arse! By the looks of things, it really could be up there with the triple A's, but it really needs the commitment from Sony to succeed!

I dont know, 15 min hack was useful since it allowed defenders to retake a base before it flipped. Maybe the attackers have to take each tower in the base before being able to move in on the base proper?

If SOE Blow's this it's over. This is their shot to capitalize on a fresh and exciting genre which SOE itself essentially created. WoW,Aion,Rift (lol) and that Star Wars MMO have pretty much crushed them in the RPG market. Even a prettier and newer EQ probably wouldn't be a big hit unless it involves some serious MMORPG innovations. If SOE know's what they are doing (And for once it appears they do)they will sink everything they have into Planetside 2. It REALLY DOES have a chance of being this Decades World of Warcraft. That all being said: I'm riding this ship until it sinks...Smed forbid it ever does.

its been said because of the hex system cap times will vary, while now you wont have to drain to backhack a base(a good change) backhacking a base surrounded my enemy hexes will take say 30min while taking a base surrounded by friendly hexes would take say 2 min. (I cant remember if he quoted times previously, but its something like that)

Hmmm, I wasn't aware of this. If this is the case then that's excellent! I always wanted a way to vary the hack times.

It would be great for mopping up the last few capture points on a continent.

It would make it a lot harder to gain a foothold on a new continent though, although that may not always be a bad thing. Depends on the rest of the game balance.

Mosquito looks really....Well...Dumb to me...But the backdrop is really impressive, despite the brown 'n bloom environment it looks really awesome. The lighting also looks spectacular.

I don't know if this was discussed and or clarified before, but I wonder if those missiles will work on a what you see is what you get system.

As in, will we be able to carry, at most, 16/24 missiles depending on the type? And when we fire one, will it be visually missing from the rack?

I guess it would make no sense to model them like this if they weren't, but you never know...
