Who knows how to install a Geforce4 4600 8x into a Gateway? If you need something else on how to please tell me. Is there a differnce between a Geforce4 4600 and a geforce4 4600 8x? cause I ordered a geforce4 4600 and got the 8x one...

I didn't even know they had a 8x AGP version of the 4600. I know they have one for the 4800 and the 4200.

a 8x will not fit a 4x slot, you will ahve to send it back :( or get a new mobo

well that's not entirely true. Check if your motherboard is 8x compatible. Chances are you can run it but it will run at 4x not 8.

yeah it will work if your mobo is 8x compatible , if its not you'll know right away it wont fit 8x requiersa longer slot;)

You'll have to check to see if your mobo supports it. Usually it's better to do this research BEFORE you actually buy the thing... lol. :) I also didn't know they had a 4600 8x agp... Anyway, check your mobo (call Gateway or something) or just put it in and see if it works! If it doesn't, send it back and get a 4x. :)

if you can avoid buying the 4600 8x they have slower performance than the 4x and thats because there is no programs that are demanding enough to use it so its just gives you reduced performance ,a real waste untill doom3 comes out ,oh and unreal2 it will work better with unreal 2;)

I highly doubt that 8x would make it any slower... It shouldn't have any problems running at 4x at all.

yea.. uhh.. what the heck guys... All AGP slots are the same. If the MOBO does not support 8x then it will run at 4x. And quite honestly there is no damn improvement from 4x to 8x...

There aren't any improvements because games and programs don't take advantage of it. In alot of tests running at 8x was worse than 4x by 1 to 2%.

Well, some video cards(the 4800 for one I believe) require 8X and won't work on 4X I think. Not sure if 4X will work on 8X slots

I didn't order the 8x one, but thats what they sent me.

A 4x will fit in a 8x slot a 8x will not fit in a 4x slot .
and all the benchmarking I have seen actually shows slower performance .

fit? the physical size of the APG 3.0 slot is the same as AGP 2.0.... As for the AGP speed, all AGP 8X cards are backwards compatible whit agp4X....
Saying you need a AGP 8 board whit a AGP 8X card is like saying you need a DDR 400MHZ board to run 400MHZ chips.... You can turn down the speed yourself.

Then why is my agp slot on my ASUS A7N8X deluxe longer than the agp slot on my old motherboard it even has a tab to remove before placing in the 8x graphics card so it fits.

You must have a wierd board then becuase none of the A7N8X boards that i've seen has a tab of anny sort or a larger AGP slot than the AGP 2.0 and 3.0 size...

Thats a stock A7N8X board, can't see anny tabs or a larger than normal AGP slot there....
edit: figured i should add, ASUS conforms to the agp 3.0 standard whit all it's AGP 8X boards, i own a AGP8X asus board and theres no tabs or larger slot on that.

ALL AGP SLOTS ARE THE SAME!!!! WE WENT OVER THIS!!!! THE SPEED IS DETERMINED BY THE BIOS ON THE MOBO.
4x 8x or even 2x is a software thing not a hardware.... sheesh.... if there is some extra tab its for locking the AGP card into the slot(completely useless) and thats it... but they will all fit fine.... Just dont try and jam it into a PCI slot...
