Ive been gaming for over 25 years. Ive had most gaming experiences.
But now I have lost all interest in anything that isnt planetside.
Reasons:
1 Playing alone, just seems boring to me.
2 I need real people interaction in a game.
3 It has to be a FPS, or a very good very good other type of game e.g. SC2 (Starcraft2).
4 It has to be a mature community (hehem basti, just kidding )
5 It has to not have any sort of AI, they just get boring for me very quick nowadays.
6 It has to look good.
7 It has to immerse me into a position of team work and overall goal.
8 It has to immerse me in its overall design.
Cant think of any more.
But I have quite alot of spare time on my hands, im still at home at 31, and have no kids. So I could be buying and playing many games, but atm, none of them appeal to me at all. And nor does any other platform than the PC.
Rant over :)

In other words, the ONLY thing about it that isn't real is, well, the damage and physical aspects of combat. The teamwork, cameraderie, frustration, work (not physical), discipline, etc. present you with challenges a lot more like the real thing than shooting AI bots.
But it's virtual.

I agree with the OP. I do enjoy a good RTS or city-building game though.

Mass Effect. Fallout. Problem solved.
I feel singleplayer is still very much alive in many games. Even console multiplayer juggernaut like Call of Duty ushers out decent singleplayer campaigns.

The only game I can currently think of to suggest is Battlefield 3.
I'm kinda getting tired of it, but that's just because a lot of my friends keep talking about Modern Warfare 3 and we're ready for the release.

for single player games to keep me interested there needs to be open world-go at your own pace do what you want in between; mass effect series(first one was more linear than 2 though), red dead redemption, boarderlands, and all the GTAs. actually, I wasnt fond of any of the multiplayer in these games. Try these games if you want a good single player experience. Skyrim should be pretty good too.

I can say that the quality of a lot of single player in games with multiplayer as well as dropped significantly, but there are still plenty of SP games that are still a lot of fun. The Fallout games, Mass Effect Series, Dragon Age Series, and the Elder Scrolls Series are all great games that deserve at least 1 playthrough.

I used to play single player games all the time but I just can't do it anymore, If I am I atleast need a community to talk to while I'm playing.

Too much gaming, little fornicating. Needs to mix things a bit and interests in old stuff may return.
However I have to agree in part with single player games becoming less interesting once you're used to multiplayer gaming.

I've given up using money on any single player titles anymore. They've just never been worth the money for you. Some big titles such as Skyrim I checked out the... non paying way, but didnt end up playing it many hours, so proves again that they just arnt for me :D

I still love a lot of single player game experiences, but they always fail to deliver that adrenaline rush that you get from real, human controlled opponents.
It's almost like two completely different forms of entertainment.
Like three forms of unique entertainment would be: Single player games, movies, and multiplayer games.
I can still enjoy certain single player games if they are done well, just like multiplayer games haven't destroyed my ability to watch a good movie. The experiences just don't overlap very much though.

The only single player games I can get into are Zelda, Mario, Dead Space (I like scary stuff) and Grand Theft Auto. Been trying to get into Skyrim for the last month. Haven't gotten far at all. =\

I hear ya man, i just cant get back into singleplayer games anymore. Played some skyrim, lost interest in a few hours. Never finished crysis2, heck i havent finished a single player game in many many years. I've stopped buyin em in fact, as much as i lie to myself and buy em, i know i will lose interest in a day or two and will never finish em.
Although my games have to have some sort of co-op. It can be co-op to kill other friends, i dont mind, but just doin the boring brain dead stuff in CoD just makes me want to cut myself, thats the perfect example of boring braindead multiplayer imo.
Heck i was playing SWToR and just due to how poorly it works as far as questing with friends if they ever play even a little bit more or less than you, meaning they cant do it and you end up questing alone....i lost interest. It felt like KotoR, and I lost interest in that fast. Funny enough during the early access release weekend, i spent a zillion times as much time playing Dungeon Defenders on steam with friends than i played SWToR. Heck even L4D2 and others got more time.
I dont even play PS1 unless i get some friends to log on with me. Its just no fun by yourself. =)
