View Full Version : The current results from the PSU faction poll

Just wanted to make an observation and, hopefully, provoke some discussion. ;)

There's almost 500 votes in that poll, and I think it's pretty awesome that the interest in each faction is spread very evenly. Of course we're biased and it may work differently for people who will see PS2 for the first time, plus there's a lot more information about the TR and NC than the VS, but still...

I just think it's an amazing feat by the current PS2 team, as well as the original PS1 team. To create 3 very different factions and give each enough appeal to spread out the interest as evenly as this. Let's hope the current results translate into the actual game. :)

I think most people would have picked the same faction as PS1, i know i have.

I blame the current 2% TR bias because of the current week probably of released info.

I used to be VS, stuck through the initial year where just about everything they used was common pool because their weaponry was just crap overall (except for the lancer, most people just couldn't get used to how it handled at the time.)

Some time down the road, I went TR. Dunno why. Think it was my brothers fault. Also, I really liked the feel and sound of the Cycler, what can I say?

TR main now, VS secondary. Never did get comfortable with the NC.

Yea I've always been amazed how even it is in polls, I wanted to create it again to see if the factions were still even and it appears they are. Pretty cool stuff :D

Still amazes me how people are so loyal to or identify with an arbitrary team in a video game. Confuses me almost as much as the near religious devotion to sports teams that they have no personal connection to at all.

I primarily played the purple team because I preferred that set of weapons, though the blue team was a close second. Never was much of a fan of the red teams weapons.

It's what I meant by there being more information about the TR and NC. :)

@CutterJohn this is also one of the cool things about PlanetSide - the way it creates faction loyalty and hate for the two others. I think it runs even deeper than Horde/Alliance in WoW. ;)

Its what made the game great when it was 1 empire per server. Changing sides had a real consequence ie you needed to delete your NC toon to play VS.

I find it fun that it is almost arbitrary which team you join, unlike sports teams where it usually ends up being whichever team was in the area you lived, or the area you move to.

It makes it that much more fun to play up the rivalry to ridiculous levels.

Thats because in PS the whole game is PvP and your constantly fighting the other 2 factions, while WoW is mainly a PvE game and the other faction is just there. When someone is always trying to kill you, you tend to not like them very much :p

I always hated that restriction, and was glad to see it go. I made plenty of friends on the other teams by fighting them and wanted to play with them on occasion. My ideal MMOFPS would have you pick your team every time you logged in(and with the same character at that).

Maybe they'd let me purchase a '4th empire' account. I'll pay extra for that! :D

I hate you for saying that. IMHO the worst thing the Dev team did to the game, aside from BFR's, was allowing people to have more than 1 empire per server, I can understand they did it solely because of merging servers, but hopefully in PS2 they will NEVER allow more than 1 Empire per server...

For the Dev's reading this page, I'll repeat: Do not allow more than one Empire per server! Thanks! :)

Why, because they hammed it and had no strong measures for promoting short term team balance through incentives and lockouts?

At any rate, you fail to understand the ramifications of the game being F2P. ;)

Depends on if it has a box price. Still cheaper than paying two subscriptions though, so...

I hope they keep the cross- faction dialogue part of the game .I want 1 empire pre server but talking to enemies you can make some great friends, and still want to kill each other .It's not all spies ,and morons having a heart attack because they just died and dont accept the fact.

I played mostly TR as thats where my friends were, but with the original outfit being iffy and being able to prob drag most of those who are left with me wherever i go, TR is not set in stone at all. I liked the feel and play of VS the most in PS1, but its gonna come down to how beta goes. Gonna see how each one plays and which one leans best toward our style of play.

Other than if you have a guild of friends set on a specific faction already, I cant see makin even the slightest decision yet.

Fell in love with VS just from promo screen shots before release. Anytime I play on NC or TR my skin just crawls. So yeah, I'm going to play VS again and the fact I have a bunch of friends who played VS as well is icing.

In the reddit QnA higgs said there will be comms between empires.

This is good. Yes there should be rivality between the factions but at the same time having comms between the empires is something I think is important for the sake of the community. :)

I loved that APB allowed you to broadcast your voicecomms to an area. I don't really want that in PS2, but I def want the ability to call out the enemy, demand surrender, challenge them to a duel.

HaHa most likely yes !

But i think the things will be different when people having never heard about those empire will have to choose ingame, with only a short presentation about the 3 factions.
I'm really curious how it will evolve.

When I chose the VS back in the day (1st choice mind you) my buddy suggested that I get the game never telling me which empire he was on. I chose VS because of their futuristic look and sci-fi mentality, since at the time I was a huge sci-fi geek it was the obvious choice. Ended up loving the empire, sticking with it and by chance my buddy who told me about PS was also on VS unbeknownst to me.

So as to answer your post, when the VS info is released... already noobs would have more info than I did when I chose. Plus these short videos and informational comm-links are only scratching the surface of what the Devs have in mind - think of when your installing the game or even before empire selection, there will be a long and detailed video pertaining to each empire.

Going off the dev list and faction they play, as a rule it appears most of the artists play VS , while the programmers and heads play NC .TR have a token support. This tells me the VS will look the best , NC will have the best of everything and generally be considered overpowered , and the Tr will compete but have to work twice as hard to achieve the same results.

Only if Europe gets 3 servers and we have a deal.

On Emerald, especially after the Konreid merge, VS always had the lowest pop. When I first started TR and NC were pretty even, then when the NC started dominating, they got the 4th empire and always had the highest pop.

I've always loved the relatively equal pops in this game. It's just the way they did the Empires, each had an element that made them awesome.

The TR were black and red, doesn't matter that the Cycler was underpowered and the vehicles required 3 operators instead of 2, red and black is just awesome sauce.

The NC had the one shot kill stuff, jackhammer was a monster of close quarters, the Gauss was one of the most well-loved weapons of the game and the Vanguard had the only gun in the game that could 1 shot a rexo. Not to mention the ScatMax.

And the VS had L4Z0RS!!!!! Same as red and black, don't need much incentive to join.

Kept the pops relatively balanced and made the game fun.

Sadly the only proper LAHZOR we have is our BFR pilot AI, and now that will be gone.

I sure hope we will have a replacement somewhere, we need beam spam, not bolt spam!

I can agree with that statement. All of a sudden I'm thinking of the tripod from war of the worlds.

Or nosegun for the Scythe
You'd have to hold it on target to do good damage though. Keeping infantry centered in the crosshairs could be a challenge even with the old flight model.

Maybe if it was an anti-vehicle weapon...
