Would it be possible to also have a compass rose on the minimap, in the manner of PS1? I never actually liked the ones that have been show in screenshots so far.

Good point indeed, BF3 is really annoying when it comes to target calling because of that bar's insufficiency. I mean, there's nothing wrong with finding out the direction you need, but it takes some time unlike when you have compass rose. That's a bad thing.
EXAMPLE:
- Enemy prowler... uhm... uhm, this is south, in that case that is... *BOOM*

Considering that the idea is for PS2 to have a faster pace than PS1, it would be silly to take a step backwards in the speed at which you can pinpoint a compass direction.
Bring back the rose! At the very least include it as a HUD customization option, the default option at that. I see no reason not to have a few different options for those who prefer their compass a certain way, but considering that they are planning on sticking with a single HUD configuration to start with, get that initial HUD right.

i suspect the HUD is yet to be finished so plenty of time for it to appear but i concur the compass rose is pretty essential

Having transparent NESW on the minimap seems like a no brainer. In a similar vein, I'd also like to see useful or scaling grids on the world map. The rigid battleship grids didn't provide near enough detail for easy communication and were typically ignored because of it.

Agreed with everyone above. A compass rose in the minimap is far superior to a bar and is definitely my preferred choice. PS1's implementation was pretty good since you got secondary/tertiary direction tick marks as well and it hardly interfered at all w/ the info displayed in the minimap.
I also hope that they keep in the option for a rotating minimap so that what's in front of you is always at the top of the minimap. Ideally I'd like it to be a toggle you can bind to a key since I prefer a rotating minimap while indoors but a static "up is north" minimap while outdoors

One thing I would like is to have the option to set north up on the mini map compass. The world does not turn you do.

A little /bump, seeing that the lastest pic still has the bar instead of the rose...
This thread only recieved positive response so I propose keeping it on track.

Word. It's good you brought it up so they might actually still change it according to feedback.
We need to be able to see the whole compass at once, makes calling out targets so much easier.

I agree with that , Myself with many other BF2 players in the FH community hate the compass in BF3 too small and does not make it easy to report enemy positions quickly and effectively. So small you forget its even there especially when your in combat, don't do it !
When I play BF2 in our FH2 Campaign it's lovely having the big compass on the mini map especially when I'm commanding my Division :)

Too funny, after I saw the Scythe HUD pic I was gonna /bump this thread tonight when I got back from work....
Like I said above, PS1's compass that circumflexes the minimap is far superior to a bar compass like the one in the pics we've seen so far. I'm sure there are some who prefer the bar compas so maybe there will be an option to choose one or the other.
Ideally, I'd like the following:
An option to choose between a bar-style and circumflexing compass
An option to choose between a static minimap with up = north and a rotating one that has up = the direction your avatar is facing
A configurable keybind to toggle between the static and rotating minimaps on-the-fly
Both the automatic and manual minimap zooming that's present in PS1 (I have zooming down to mouse scroll up/down, and its invaluable)

I tweeted (and I almost never tweet) Higby right after seeing that picture. I expressed my love of the pic, and asked if we would be getting the option of a compass rose.
No response as of yet, but he hasn't posted anything on twitter today, so I'll have to wait and see if I get a response.
I'm really hoping we do. It's a clear improvement over compass bars for fast paced games. All of the other shooters should adopt it.

I tweeted Higby and TRay again today, hoping to catch them while they were tweeting more.
No luck. It's probably that they haven't come to a decision or finalized it's implementation, so they don't want to talk about it until they can promise with certainty.
Either way, it can't be a bad thing to keep them aware of this request.
If it were just an option and not mandatory (although why wouldn't you want to use it?), I can see absolutely no downside to adding it. It can't possibly take so much time to develop as to offset the value that it would add, can it?

I think the reason this topic keeps slipping down the page is that everyone agrees that it should be in and as such have nothing more to say on it.

Does any of the UI guys have Twitter? They would probably be the most likely to consider the feedback :D
This thread needs more Mr. Higgles.

If you can mod the UI that would be cool too. Someone would surely convert it then.

just for the numbers:
i am also all for compass rose, ps1 style with rotating option!
was just perfect.
compass bar as an option or even as an addition to minimap rose, wouldn´t hurt. maybe the kiddy front drawn in from bf3 and the like actually prefer this.
but the bar is of no use for tactical players.

Honestly, I would have zero problems if they wanted to put a compass bar on the HUD by default, although hopefully with the option to turn it off.
I wouldn't even have a problem with them making the compass rose be turned off by default, although it blends so perfectly with the radar/mini map view that I can't see any good reason not to have it on by default, possibly in addition to the compass bar.
The only thing I really want is the option of a compass rose. Sensor bars don't interest me or bother me in the slightest.

Personally I can say that I have never experienced this issue, because I always knew which direction was north (from the map screen) and when I gave / received tactical calls the amount of time to locate a compass point is far higher than giving a "time" ...
although I always flew aircraft so I am probably biased as you have to describe where the AA is hiding more than just the direction they are in ...

I don't see why the compass shouldn't be intergrated into the mini-map. All a compass bar will do is clutter up the HUD, unless you don't have the mini-map up.

It's really only an issue if your have the "rotate radar" option enabled. If you do, then "up" on the minimap is not north, but instead is the direction you're currently facing.
I like to relay time headings too, but they can be misunderstood since different people may use a different reference pt for 12:00. Some may use north. Others may define it as the direction of the objective your group is approaching. Between a driver and gunner it often means the direction the vehicle is currently heading.
However, north is north. There is very little room for misinterpretation.

I'm all for its integration, It might not be "everyone" who wants it, but it sure doesn't hurt those who don't.

and Erendil , for me it was always the direction the galaxy was facing but, DW I get your point and agree ... if only Higby did too ...

Problem with the clock "directions" is indeed that people don't all understand it the same and even then I think its unoptimal in games where we can easily have an unrealistic compass on our HUD at all times.
While APBs minimap is nonexistant (has no terrain on it, only shows enemies after certain actions as red blips as well as friendlies as green), it is round and has a compass around it. It makes teamwork and calling out targets extremely easy. BF3s stupid compass bar makes it much slower and it doesnt even look better. It's a lose-lose situation.
And as said, I really don't mind having the option to use the compass bar, but I would make it be a compass rose by default. It makes teamwork even with randoms much easier.

And now I've started thinking about if there was a 5th direction. Wonder what kind of intersecting parallel lines we'd need for that.
I never used the rotating mini-map out side of experimentation. Not having that fixed view really played with my perceptions as I heavily rely on my mini-map for pretty much everything.

Yeah it's pretty disorienting for me too if I use it outside.
Indoors though I found it actually quite useful when I tried it, since my spatial perception changes and I start sensing where everything is relative to the direction I'm facing instead of picturing them in relation to compass headings (unless I'm calling out an outside OS target for someone).
However, since there is no toggle key bind in PS1 to switch between the 2 setting I just keep it in the non-rotating form.

I see that the new gameplay footage is still sporting the inferior bar-style compass at the top edge of the minimap so I thought I'd /bump this since everyone here seems to prefer the PS!-style circumflexed compass.
Mr. Higby, any chance we could get the PS1-style minimap compass as an option? Pwetty pweeeeeeease???

Yeah, I used the compass all the time in PS1, but never used it in BF3. It's just too hard to quickly get a direction out of it. Would much prefer it to be on the minimap instead of a bar.
