View Full Version : Thoughts on Beta

If your still subbed consider the fact your money is going towards the development and future development of PS2! Which is awesome!
I've not been subbed for 2 months purely because of pop, but I will be subbing later on this month in anticipation for the beta. BUT if pops are low and no-ones subbing who are they are going to open the beta to? (as far I'm aware they are inviting subbed players to beta? Maybe I got it wrong?). I doubt the existing subbed gamer base will be sufficient to test the game before full release, which leads me to believe SOE must have a plan to invite players to beta even if they aren't subbed at the time?
What do you think?
Also, the release of some images (i.e. the surenderer and also lack of VS sneak peeks) with no textures, leads me to believe they really are quite far off any beta release.

I think you got the general idea. They need more people than subbed currently. That's how I've always planned to get into the beta. Just wait. Also I'm still thinking we'll see a 2012 beta. Subbing for December is a waste of time.

I'm sure I read somewhere (correct me if I'm wrong) beta release possible towards the end of 2011, and release at some point early(ish) next year.
How terrible would it be if they released beta to subbed players only? I'd be pretty gutted if I wasn't subbed.
I'm interested in hearing from the SOE team what their plans are for this. Higby as a fellow NC, please stand up! I'm generally not interested in when the beta is released more what the criteria are to qualify for it, if indeed there are any at all?

I roll with an SOE All Access Pass so subs aren't an issue for me.
I loves me some EverQuest and PlanetSide every now and then, even if not many people still play.
In nowadays F2P games, the beta is a period in which they attract their community AND also test some parts of the game (equilibrating and netcode ?). Their open beta should be in fact more like a demo. I hope that's what SOE is trying to do with PS2 : a large open beta bringing a lot of new guys who want to try the game for free.
But about the date, i hope SOE doesn t listen to us too much, and TAKE ITS TIME to release any playable game.
Really, we saw what an unfinished game does when it's released to early : it crashes (Brink). Since the beta is taken as a Demo by most of the players, who don t go on the forum, and don't listen to the dev when they say "we're gonna fix this!", if the Demo sucks, people are gonna leave the game and it's gonna be very hard to make them come back.

Clarification on the beta criteria (again if there are any) would be great. A date or point in the future is not important to me.
I do wonder if we will ever find out before beta though. If we all think we need to sub to take part that's more £$'s. SOE I'm sure will take full advantage of that, who wouldn't!

My opinion is you should be banned for a week for starting a thread with this title while having no evidence of a release date.

I almost agree with Draep. I don't think you should be banned, but having a thread entitled "BETA" without any qualifier like "Are you subbed in preparation for Beta?" is like crying wolf. No one should be writing the word beta on its own without their post having concrete information about it's inception. Many people are going to be irritated with you for starting this thread.

My bet : PS1 active customers will have X keys to enter PS2 closed beta, that they can distribute to anyone they want.

God, get a grip! My bad on the title choice but I really don't think a ban is necessary. What forum rule have I broken? A tad OTT guys!
Whilst I'd love to claim glory for changing the title of the thread to what it is currently, it's obvious an admin altered it (apologies admin!).
Still, what's everyone thoughts on how the beta will be released?

The number of subbed players must be pretty low (unless data can be provided to prove otherwise?). If this is the case, this is not exactly the best way to attract players to the beta.
IMO I think anyone with an email linked up to the official PS2 wesbite will receive an invitation to play the beta.
I know the pop is quite low right now. So low I don't even care to log in at the moment due to playing BF3 and Dungeon Defenders (great cheap game). To be honest I would not be shocked if there is several times the active population of the game just staying subbed for beta. I have 3 guys in my dead outfit just doing that.
Regardless if the subscriber beta option is still true SOE I think said they have priority. Doesn't mean they will not pass out keys to others, especially station access subs. That must be in the thousands.

I think it's incredibly unfair for SOE to expect gamers to continue to sub for PS1 in the hope they are invited to beta. It's pretty slimy and as you say, you know of people subbed but not even playing the game due to pop levels.
What are they paying for? Beta's are test runs that allow publisher to analyse data in order to release a successful product (usually). You shouldn't have to pay for that, as you are helping them out by participating.

I dislike when people post things like this, what right do they have to say anything? I know opinions are opinions but these are not justified in anyway. Like I said makes them look like 5 year old kids. Next time someone tries to tell you what to do, tell them to F off, these people are not admins on this site nor will they ever be.
Not exactly sure why everyone is getting so worked up over the thread. The9 last I knew said beta first quarter of next year.
If there was a major beta announcement I would expect the source to be more then just a mere thread with "beta" in it. More like an announcement from SOE during these weekly events or a write up from Hamma on the front page.

It doesn't matter, it's not important.
I've submitted a question for the twitter Q&A on Friday in the hope we can get some answers. Whilst it is an NC themed Q&A I hope we can sneak a cheeky unrelated question in there that may give us an idea of what to expect. I've certainly not asked for beta release dates, solely the way in which the beta will be released.
I'm sure this is all on our minds.

The way I look at it, at this point, you should really only subscribe to PS1 if you want to play PS1. There is very little firm information about PS2 beta at this point, so paying money into one game for the hope of getting into a beta that hasn't been announced yet for a different game is only going to create stress and make you bitter for "not getting what you pay for".
If you really really want to be a PS1 subscriber mainly to get into PS2 beta, I'd suggest being patient and waiting a bit longer until more information comes out about the beta.

I played a few times with the free time I had never used from the SOE hacked debacle. Too depressing. It isn't really Planetside anymore.
I respect the people who still play. If you still have fun with it, more power to you. I hope they keep PS1 running for you after PS2 launches. It just isn't the game I enjoyed from back in the day.
I'm not going to sub just in the off chance that it gets me early beta access. I want to be in beta the day it starts, more than I've wanted to try out any game before, but I leave that in the hands of the developers. If they want to skip over me because I'm not subbed to PS1, so be it.
PS1 players, former and current, will be an important part of beta, but I don't feel like people who are currently subbed to PS1 will be an accurate representation of the games entire target audience. They could use a nice selection of former players, current players and people who have never played Planetside before. I hope to make it in as a former PS1 player.
My account information is all up to date and everything. I'm just going to keep hoping they didn't tell me to do that for nothing :)

Just make an informed decision on whether you want to sub or not to ps1 , and have done with it.
Food for thought : just because you have a ps1 sub , dosen't make you automatically a good beta tester by default .
Likewise , if you are subscribed in anticipation of beta from time Smedley announced the initial rumours, you may have spent $2-250 by the time ps2 is released on sub alone, to play a game you may play for free.

I hope this is true, lots of great players who may have left the game way back in its infancy but left for whatever reason , bfr's , hackers , core combat etc would be just as valuable to the overall net result.

I'm thinking merely having an active sub will allow one into beta. It would be their work around way of having you pay to play PS2 without actually paying to play PS2 proper.
Though I'd rather pay to play PS2 beta than pay to play PS1 retail as it currently stands, and I'm desperate for some Planetside.
