Something I had not realized till I looked at Basti's post:
The light in front of the Vanguards isn't from the sun, that's headlight illumination. We had not seen that in a screen shot yet.
Night fighting is going to be a blast.

True, but this is either right at dusk or dawn since you can see the sun behind the tanks.
So it wouldn't be pitch black. And the screen shot would not have been as epic if half of it was black lol.

I imagine it will be pretty UP at start. The key to aerial battles is maneuverability and if this was any indication, the Reaver will be the least maneuverable aerial vehicle in the game(besides the Galaxy and Lib).

Hmm. I was referring to ground targets crying more. I have little air to air experience in any game to be honest. Just used to getting pounded by them in my tanks and running around with my rifle. I know maneuverability is a key aspect of A2A. I am sure the good pilots will figure a way around this if the firepower is the key advantage to this aircraft.
Higby said tanks can be changed through their hill climbing, speed, and maneuverability. I don't remember them saying this about aircraft, but I wouldn't be shocked if it was possible. If someone was interested in A2A as opposed to A2G engagements perhaps specializing in A2A more will help offset that disadvantage.
Sounds similar to the air engagements from Vietnam perhaps. The F4 phantom was fast, but wasn't the best at dog fighting. The mig on the other hand was superior in that department. Will be interesting to see how much the strengths and weaknesses effect the game. Its beginning to so even more like the empires are far different from each other then even compared to PS. With many common pool vehicles becoming ES now.

And yet it is the perfect ground attack candidate - hard hitting weapons and heavier armor. What else could you wish for?
In the end the differences probably won't be dramatic

1st - There were lots of complains about Call of Duty NV always on style of playing.
2nd - It is already dark enough. Place a TR with a striker on top of that ledge to the left and you simply won't see him until you look thoroughly.

Seeing the Reavers better, the only thing that comes to mind is:
"Hey, Bob."
"Yeah, Jim?"
"I was thinking, 'wouldn't it be cool if we could put wings on a tank and blow shit up?'"
"Sounds awesome."
So was born the Reaver.
Also, that second pic is funny, chasing off that Mossy with a whole squadron of winning.

They won't fulfill the same gameplay role as sancs do (i.e. launching point for combat). Maybe they'll be hubs for outfit housing and meeting places or something. We're still in really early planning phases for them but thats the direction I'm kind of leaning in.

Twitch gameplay fo NC? NC was always mainly for killwhores, and now there will be even more killwhore reinforcements for them from other games twitch based games.
But does that mean that TR and VS have different gameplay? I really hope so. It would be really interesting that every empire would have slightly different gameplay. Something where you need to think, use tactics and not only fast hands?

I still dont get this enitre "faster into combat" reasoning for them. Really, whats the difference between sancs and those things? What stops you from just keeping them out, adding sancs, and still keep the "get fast into combat" stuff?
Right now, the way i see it, you guys pretty much took out the only sense of victory planetside had: Locking a continent. Instead, you added one big problem: During off hours, especialy during nights, people will just ghost hack the crap out of everything, and there wont be any way to stop it. Even if you somehow manage to split the population well enough to have each continent full on all servers during prime time, once prime time is over, everything is screwed. The big fight during night will happen somewhere, and all other continents are free to be ghosted by single guys.
So, just give us the sancs back, keep those uncappable bases out, but also keep the ability to just log in, see the map first, and choose on what continent you want to go. That still allows the fast into combat stuff, but now also gives the possiblility to fully control a continent AND gives everyone a proper staging point for those big ass raids (Sanc).
Win Win Win situation.
Or do i just get the entire thing wrong? just explain already how its ment to work, and what you got to make it work that way. The collective mind of us veterans can tell you pretty quickly if this can actually work. Remember, we are gamers, we are forced by nature to rip apart every system and just exploit it for our own benefit. ;)

Just keep the Sanc's smaller than they were... no need to spawn at one of 3 random locations to try and find your outfit; whom are waiting for you to teleport over to start a carpet bombing run or gal drop or something

That's how cities in WoW worked at launch. Then when tons of people were lagging out they realized hmm maybe its a better idea to have people spawn into different parts of the city lol.
That's one possible reason for sanctuary removal they have not mentioned is it may be part of their strategy to spread people out. But I don't think anyone likes the idea of not being able to fully capture the continents.

Basti is right, Cont. locks are good and Ghost hacks are bad. In planetside the biggest "delay" of getting into combat was the HART timer. I understand SOE is trying to appeal to the more fast paced way FPS has evolved; but if a player can't wait 5 minutes to enter the game then they are awfully impatient. Sanctuaries were a good concept and we should simply re imagine them. If you want to scratch that "fast itch" then make it possible to log into a friendly base under certain conditions. I have to ask, Does the development team feel inclined to speed up entrance to combat because of games like COD or Battlefield? Have we not already decided this game ISN'T either of those? HART was a pretty good idea, why not simply allow people to load in ON the HART and deploy via Drop pod from there?
I don't mind the removal of the Sanctuary's as much as I dislike not being able to lock continents. Basti is really correct in his assertion in that locking continents are planetside's equivalent of "duh, winning". The beachhead idea kind of takes that away..and who is to stop one faction from "Beachhead camping" the other? (3rd empire?)

I'm all for no sancs. Really only becuase of the home conts they made in PS1. I hated always having to give up all headway you made on one continent with the 1 faction just because the other faction wanted to attack your home cont. Maybe this will get the fight moving to different continents more often and lessen the chance of another cyssorside. I'm all about it. You all say it is no diferent so what does it matter then?
Say no to SANC!

The wierdest change beside lock mechanism imo is still the 'driver is gunner' thingy. I mean it may be understandable for Prowlers and Vanguards... but I can't really imagine any decent Magrider/Skyguard hit-and-run action without a dedicated gunner.
Let's hope the driver can still delegate his turret control or something...

I would be worried if it hadn't been stated that you can mount your own secondary gun to be controlled by a gunner. Drivers that don't use gunners will die more often until they realize that having a gunner can turn a medium battle tank into a force to be reckoned with. While they learn, they are high-BEP cannon fodder ripe for farming so everyone wins!

I couldn't disagree more.
1) Locking a continent was not the only sense of victory. There were victories with every tower and every base that was taken. In fact, locking a continent usually sucked because more often than not, the losing empire would ditch the continent well before it is locked, so the "winners" are left with a 9-1 advantage as they mop up the last base or 2. This makes the last 15-30 mins a boring chore instead of exciting gameplay. Locking a continent is vastly overrated.
2) The servers are likely to be regional, just like the original Planetside. This means, no matter what, there will be down time. And during that downtime, ghost hacking will happen. It always happened with the original Planetside, even with its sancs and continent locks, so I'm not sure what fantasy world you lived in. Actually, I think the new territory capture system may likely be an improvement against ghost hacking.
TL;DR - The devs are adding victories and likely decreasing ghosting. Basically improving on the original. Don't fear change.

Sanc locks occurred in one of two scenarios. A grossly overpopulated empire, or 2 empires teaming up. The first is just crap gameplay. The second is a loss condition, not a win condition. You can't have two winners.
Behind the lines ghost hacks will be difficult to pull off because bases behind the lines will take much longer to hack, giving people ample time to respond. The front lines will continue to shift as per normal. Playing at night doesn't mean you're an inferior creature relegated to meaningless actions so as not to piss off the glorious dayshift master race.

How useful are Liberators, GVs, and Vultures with no gunners? Not very. How is 6 Lightnings working together less teamwork oriented than 3 MBTs with 2 men in it? Its not.

Hard to gauge from some of those pics but the flight ceiling looks a bit higher?
Loving the lens flare, more lens flare is always good!
I would agree with Basti - having a sanc where once can launch an empire wide raid from where no other empires even have knowledge that you are doing it was a beautiful thing (except for global pop being missing). A lot of my standout memories of PS1 is when we got these huge raids together, and I just can't see that happening with these little continent safe zones.
Speaking of population counters, will those be in the game again so you can see where the global population is or are they just going to do balance of forces on one cont or what?

At launch, with the limited number of continents available it makes complete sense to give each empire a starting point from which they cannot be driven, a sanctuary-like area on the home-base turf for each empire. As our access to Auraxis grows and more continents are released, having a staging/meeting area that can't be completely conquered will allow for persistent outfit Barracks and large coordinated attacks as well as a hard reset point for your squad. The new Sanctuary shouldn't be linked to specific points on a limited number of continents and it shouldn't be the default place that people log in at, it should be the place where an empire can have its last stand before pushing back.
For those of us that were dedicated/lucky enough to achieve it, Sanc-locking one or both enemy empires was a crowning achievement in Planetside. It has been mentioned that it will be virtually impossible to achieve this in Planetside 2 but I think this could be easily balanced through basic environmental parameters. Sanctuaries or faction motherships should have a built-in defense infrastructure that allow for enemy factions to attack but also give a massive advantage to the home-team so that if one empire is getting ganged up on at least they can mow down more enemies and still have fun. We are going to try to break any limitations placed on the system including what can be captured, might as well set it up to be an epic battle for the ages!

Some really astonishing pics lately. This shit just keeps getting better. I can't wait to see what this level of graphics looks like in some of the different environments on other continents, because this continent is looking great.
The dawn/dusk canyon shot is pretty cool and makes for really dramatic shots. It's nice to be able to see how lights on things like vehicles will make such a difference. I can't wait to see a pitch black night shot, with the only illumination coming from artificial sources. I also look forward to seeing what they have done with the night sky. I hope the moons move around dynamically based on an internal time of month system.

the quality of the screenshots gets better and better! and finally we really get so see something epic! i totally love the pic with all that flying stuff chasing the mossie! hard to not imagine the tr pilot mumbling oh my god oh my god oh my god oh my god while trying to use his superior mobility to get away from the firing range of those flying tanks ;-)
and about the other discussions in this thread... i would apreciate if hamma could set up a poll, to check what the majority of the playerbase would like to see in planetside! please set up a poll and ask, if we would like to keep the tank driver/gunner model as it was in ps1, or if we want to drive and gun at the same time.
i would like to keep the old system. it felt so right and authentic. and nothing beats a good tank team with a driver and a gunner that both now what to do. i never liked the lighning a lot where i had to do both on my own. and the system that only the driver needed to cert the vehicle was great and fair, too. my mainchar had almost no vehicle certs, but i liked to gun on almost everything
i knew that ps2 has the potential to be the wow killer and to evolve into the best mmo out there the minute i learned that it was in developement. but there is still this demon in my head, creating the fear that SOE may screw this one up again like they did with ps1 and swg. at least my hope that they donĀ“t gets fuel with every new screenshot i see. our dev team puts a lot of love into this game and it shows! just be sure to keep the hold-spells active on the beancounters and evil suits!

seems the mossie has a new gun...maybe a variant, maybe new design cause TRay saw that in the normal old models the pilot couldnt sit in the cockpit cause where his legs should be, there is the gun
Do I detect thrust vectoring pods on that Mossie? Just behind the wing the engine pods appear to be vertical!

From the looks of things, I'd say that all aircraft we have seen have some sort of threst vectoring visible.
The Galaxy and Liberator appear to have rotating segments at the back of their engine pods and I assume the Reaver does as well. Obviously we now know that the Mosquito's entire engines rotate. The Scythe uses VS tech so who knows what it's engine system will look like.

I agree, but the name won't stick because then it wouldn't be Planetside ;)
And the reaver looks like a brick. It needs the armor to survive :p

Just behind the cockpit where the grey slopes down into the tail. You could remove the tail from the Red up. Personally though I'm wondering about the grey spot about half way along the mossie. Looks like it could be a refueling point or a spot for the mossie to hook up into a larger carrier of some kind.

I'm wondering if a stealthy armor column can employ night mode light (cat eyes) for vehicle. Planes flying above can see those big headlights easily at night. That would be cool.

I just had the most Badass thought of an Armored Column slinking it's way down a road in the dead of night (From above)
THIS GAME AUGH DX

Hehehehe :D
It would still be badass except the outfit leader yells, "GET THOSE LIGHTS OUT!!!" then cat eyes replace Q-Beams and you can see them from < 50' only.
This is when teamwork shines and outfits have the edge. Maybe a voice macro.
Of course this can be countered by the, "OVERHEAD FLARES NOW!!!" macro. Then sqadleaders point their plastic orange pistols in every direction.

I wouldn't mind outfit housing as long as there were purpose to it. Like a machine shop where you build 11 man tanks or giant blimps with lots of guns. As long as it's done with the idea that all of this is inside a large transport ship with each outfit getting their small section.
Having everything in an orbital ship also allows for mass drops to landing sites that can be captured. That would add another layer to the game as a closer landing site would mean faster supply of tanks and aircraft.

Brand new MAX weapons!
NC: 8-barrelled shotgun. Extreme damage.
Secondary mode fires all 8 barrels at the same time obliterating any object in front of the gun up to medium sized mountains
TR: 6-barrelled chaingun with 6 rotating sub-barrels inside each main barrel. Extreme rate of fire.
Secondary mode fills a 30 degree arc with an unbroken stream of bullets, automatically drawing ammunition from the backpacks of nearby enemies
VS: Multi-lens energy projector. Shoots shiny orbs in several differrent colors!
Secondary mode activates all the focusing lenses at the same time, projecting a fabulous rainbow that is visible even from orbit
