View Full Version : The Solution To "We Need A Gunner!"

Instead of having a voice and chat spam macro, it could be completely solved with a simple interface. The driver just has to set "looking for positions" and then icons corresponding to the position appear above the vehicle. This also allows people who are looking for a gun/ride, to open a window and see if anything in their area open for them.

Don't know how much of an issue this was going to be in PS2, but food for though. Not that Higby needs more food...

I will quote it for you.

I suggest a change to vehicles and gunners getting together.

Instead of spamming vng VNG VNG VNGOMGZZVNGPLZZZ0RZASAP; make a system whereby you all go to the terminal, drivers select gunners from a pool of gunners at same terminal, or lock to a friend/squaddie/outfittie, and when veh. spawns, gunner warps into gunner seat as it drives/flies/crawls off the ramp.

Gunners at the same terminal can select from vehicles being spawned to be available to gun. When availability meets gunner, he is warped into the gunner's seat.

This way, these points:
a) less time spent unarmed/dispossessed
b) vehicle can roll out ready to rock
c) elimination or reduction of wandering from veh. to veh. looking for a gunner's slot
d) pre-rejection of known bad gunners through an "ignore/block/be inwisible [sic] to" list that you build either parametrically (no one from X outfit, no one from outside my outfit, accept anyone who is a mechanic, whatever parameters) or specifically (specific player names)
e) vng message, if used goes out first to your trusted faithful gunners, wherever they are, if they are looking to gun
f) more fun!!!

etc. Cool thread.

Sounds like a great idea. when the window comes up to show who needs a gunner etc I think it would be cool if you click on one of the drivers and then a location marker comes up to locate the driver :)

Then maybe a chat group for vehicles instead of spamming everything in local to the greenies jumping in your gunner seat, or setting up tells. It would be really nice for something like a gunship with lots of gunners to be able to tell them there are some mossys on the tail and to kill them please.

I like this idea

I like it too but it sounds like a lot of implementation, I hope the devs have prepared something already because it seems impossible to do that before the release.

I like warping to the gunner position, but it doesn't go far enough. People should be able to set their desire to gun particular vehicles via the UI at any time. When a vehicle is then spawned with gunner seats set to public by the driver, potential gunners would get a prompt notifying them of the opening. They could then either accept or reject it based on their position in a queue if there is one. If they accept, they do some crazy warping animation deal which takes 15 seconds or 30 seconds or something and prevents them from moving or shooting. After that, poof, they're in the gunner position.

Making people travel to a terminal to do this isn't a good idea. Acquiring the vehicle, yes, but setting gunner desire? No. People should have such stuff right at their fingertips, and gameplay shouldn't be interrupted for them in order to set an option like this. People will not do it if they have to spend 10 minutes traveling to and from a facility in order to set their gunner intent, and then the problem really isn't solved.

So long as there are appropriate limits to who can gun for me. There are plenty of people I'd just as soon run over and get grief than let them get in my tank.

For this reason, I still think VNG is the best option.

It doesn't need to be complicated. Set yourself to respawn as gunner class and poof, you spawn into the gunner slot for the next guy who does V-N-G in a friendly facility. You can deconstruct and choose gunner at any friendly facility. Also, if there are vehicles waiting for gunners, instant action should pop people into them.

That's it. Complicated match-making is not needed. If you don't like who the system gave you, open door and plant your boot in his ass and V-N-G again. Another will be available in a few seconds. The idea is to give you a warm body when you need one. If you want an all-star, get some friends.
