All so I can stare lovingly into the eyes of each rebel scum, the reflection of a Cycler barrel shimmering brilliantly off their surface.

... was this actually in the requirements document handed to the forgelight development team?
I love overkill :)

Nice! But I would trade eye reflections for vehicle boarding animations.

I second this motion!
My only question is... Why? Not like any of us, for that matter are going to focus on a eye long enough for it to matter.

Here are some more twitpics from @PS_TRay showing off this engines beauty!

I agree. I asked a friend and he said it could be just a bigger part of the new reflection engine in the engine. So I guess it might've been more like a tickbox to enable it to the eyes and perhaps some adjustments to make it look right. For example, we might get similar reflections from fe. aircraft windows. I doubt this was coded in JUST for the sake of getting eye reflections.
But I do agree, can't come up with any situation where one would look at anyones eye in game that closely for it to matter.
Would've rather had boarding animations, but I'm 99% sure that would've been a crapload of more work.
Looks amazing though, BF3 is now outdated :D

Man, this engine looks to be pretty impressive. If it looks like that WITH a million people running around it will be awesome

You don't know what beauty is until you saw laser fire reflected on the glossy armor plating of a magrider

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tanhauser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain :)

I was thinking about that too but couldn't work it in

Makes me think of CSI ridiculousness.
Then I think of that Bond film where he sees the assassin in the girls eye.
Then I think of that Bladerunner quote!

I don't want to steal any of the hype, but environment mapping is only a few lines of code in a shader. I guess it's cool that it's being applied to an eye, but it's mostly a gimmick.

Unfortunately the industry seems to run on such gimmicks. As long as it was quick and easy to implement and won't be affecting day to day gameplay performance, I'm all for it.

Yea, if nothing else, gimmicks like that get media attention. And as mentioned, I believe and hope it was quite fast to implement and looks good.

It would take a whole new paradigm of graphic capability to add true mirror-like reflections to goggles, panels, anything.
Right now the shiny stuff, the reflective stuff just projects an image of a certain light level or set scene, from what I've seen. It doesn't reflect actual stuff around it, because that is best done with ray-traced graphics, and I don't think the industry is going to ray-tracing instead of bitmap graphics any time soon.
Ray-tracing can do reflections accurately and well, but I think it would be too much load for the average video card. They have entire server farms that are dedicated to this that take days to chug out portions of an animated movie.
Things in games may be shiny, but they are not usually truly reflective, as this is unnecessary to gameplay, and uses gobs of GPU power to properly execute.

That is a reflection. Same as still pond reflections, and it's awesome!
