Yea first thing I noticed, structures within a warp gate.
And all sorts of structures along roads

"Uncapturable footholds" for sure, conveniently placed within the safety of a warp gate force field. ;)

Sounds cool but if its true the Galaxy is a flying AMS this time I don't see how ground terrain would matter a whole lot. Unless you really need to capture the bunkers along the way to speed up the base hack time.

Perhaps automated logistics will figure into the picture somehow? Practically speaking the roads wheren't all that valuable in the original game. Although if terrain has greater effects on vehicle handling that may be different.

Did anyone notice the sticky notes that say 'Dont Forget the Important'. Important what?
Eh, I'm not a fan of the one-tone color scheme. It's too BF3-esque.
I liked PS1's ingame maps, they were colorful and easily shows terrain detail, etc. It would take me longer to decipher this type of map and figure out where to go, as opposed to a colored, detailed map like in PS1.
I also see no text or labels of any sort. Each base should have its own name like in PS1.

That flying AMS is going to be an easy target to shoot down until you gain control of the outside of the base. If it lands, it will either be a ways away from the base, or it will be close by and an easy target to find and destroy. It's much easier to sneak a land vehicle close to a base than it is to sneak a giant aircraft in close.
I'm hoping Sunderers are the new land based AMS and that Galaxy spawning is just one option.
I imagine it will be pretty hard to capture a well defended base without bringing in some tanks as well, so choke points will probably be critical, while aircraft will allow for tactical insertions behind enemy lines.

Out of all that I only agree with Tank support. Not having Tanks will be a painful drawback for flying straight to the enemy base.
But generally no its not that hard to just fly straight there. Pretty sure that's been done in Planetside 1 for years. Unless they want to start putting unmanned AA turrets as part of the terrain you can control. Then you really would need to fight your way up the roads.

Looks cool. I am sure the final map will be colored. Colored maps are where it's at. This is probably some sort of overlay layer for some special map effect or something.

I asked Higby about the color on the map over twitter, and being the cool guy that he is, he responded:
he's just starting on defining a look for a certain type of map overlay - i'll post updates as it evolves!
So most important, it's in the early stages. Also it sounds like there might be a number of different overlays with the map. For example, I can't help but notice the large number of dots which makes me wonder if they represent soldiers on the battlefield.
Also I wonder if the lighter blue towards the bottom are clouds. If this is a "high altitude" view it would make sense that cloud cover would have a tactical effect, especially if the overlay is like a radar that would show troops and vehicles.

im not sure it does, the left side of the picture is more square than the right side, the map is perfectly symmetrical, but it looks like they both have that smaller CY out the back, and it could be an alternative base design.

From the looks of things, I'd say that the big structures are the only uniform part, one for each of the three base types. The layout of the walls and the rest of the little little buildings and structures in the courtyard and surrounding the base are probably customized for each location.
Speculation of course, but what we have seen tends to suggest it as well.
Having more diversity in bases will be a nice changes of pace.

Am I the only one noticing that the bases seem closer to one another this time? I guess one way of speeding up combat was to get rid of boring transcontinental drives. Which I think works, it resembles the way our planet is tarting to look nowadays, the way metropolitan areas sort of blend into each other.
Even so, I don't see any definitive continental edges on that map, so at least we know it's bigger than a battle island (which is good!).
You are correct.

Bases are a lot bigger is probably why it seems that way. The distance between large facilities is pretty much the same but there are a lot more outposts and control points inbetween and in the 'wilderness'

I guess this is sort of too big of a question and something we'll have to wait a tad longer for, but how does that go together with the "everything is capturable/worth capturing"?.
Like, the bases seem even more kick ass now than they were before, but what is their worth in comparison to the land in between the bases?
I could figure land-area would be more for the resources, while a base could be for some other kind of benefits..

I would presume a base may control multiple hex grids, while a towwer may control 1-2 and these other outposts would jsut control one. Also the base may give you higher value resources, perhaps some at faster rate, not to mention if give you a proper defended spawn point for troops and vehicles, to spread your control further.
I do hope the game does not comedown to chasing ghost hackers the content trying to flip your shizzle and there is an incentive for taking points that are contested like PS1 or we will have another WAR on our hands.

Is there any nutshell information about the hexes? Read references to them a few times, but nothing really that actually explains em?
not really, but as far as i understand the hex grids are tied to the control points like a base, outpost, tower or something each hex will have different resources(Auraxium is one, i would guess titanium is another) on them that you need to upgrade weapons, armour and vehicles, possibly other things too.
Hex is also like the new lattice system, which with hex you can attempt to hack any base you like, hacking a base that you have no hex links to might take 15-30min, hacking a base that you surround with your controlled hexes may take only 2 min.
thats all i know.
Coreldan

Hmh, interesting.
I hope the time to hack a non-linked base is really long, gotta hate them ghosts taking random places in the middle of nowhere :D
Ailos
2011-11-19, 06:44 PM
I hope the hacks are continuous hacking type procedures. I.E. you start the hack and two minutes later the CC is 25% subdued or something, and you have to go back to hack it some more to continue the process. Basically, there needs to be active presence of enemy personnel in a tower for it to stay a certain color, otherwise it could flip back to the color of the base it is attached to.
Or here is another idea.
Since towers are perma-linked to a specific base, their electronics can be hard-wired to be part of the base's telecommunications system. Thus, if you control the base the tower belongs to, you can hack it from within the base, without actually having to travel to the tower. That way, a defensive hacker can be sitting at the CC of the base and ensuring that nobody hack the surrounding towers.
When the assaulting army is trying to capture a tower as a nearby spawn point as part of their assault on a base, they could use tactical EMPs to temporarily disable the link between the tower and base, and give their hackers a chance of capturing it. Then, to prevent it flipping back, a similar defensive hacker has to sit at the CC and defend it from the base owners' attempts to recapture it remotely.
