I agree, I just thought this would be fun to imagine some fun things to challenge players with

Man Cannot Outsmart Bullet
Kill 5 enemy troops with an MCG without letting go of the trigger

we need the NC and VS versions of it

hammer time: Kill 5 soldiers in a row with your jackhammer

Deadly disco: Kill 5 soldiers in a row with your lasher

and now for some new stuff

lawn service: run 5 people over with your MBT in a row

V-N-R(only if the macro buttons are different in this game, little nugget to the vets): do X amount of vehicle repairs in a row without firing your main weapon

The lack of amusing quips in the game added gravitas to the world if you were using suspension of disbelief. The only funny thing I can recall was in the merit for the Transportation Citation 1-3 and even then it was done in a mildly serious tone.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who's sickened by achievements. I often find myself grinding away for hours doing some stupid little thing in game that I would never do normally if the achievement wasn't there and when I finally "achieve" it I hardly ever feel accomplished. More of just a sigh of relief that shit's over with.

They have their place in some games but in Planetside 2 I just imagine a huge ass battlefield and everyone having fireworks shooting over their heads: "YAYYY U GOT AN ACHIEVEMENT" ala TF2. Imagine being a Sniper and getting a headshot achievement and then fireworks go off and give away your position. Of course, this is all taking it to the most extreme example, but that's what achievements make me think of. Really childish and silly things to do in the game for a false sense of achievement.

I hate achievements, and any other form of mind-numbing progression that exists for its own sake, but I can appreciate a bit of fun. Unfortunately, the only thing I could think of was:

Greets! - Use V-V-H 1000 times. :P
Your best is my worst - Kill 10 players within 10 seconds after they shot you first.
Not likely - Kill a moving enemy with a headshot at over 250 meters.
Surgile - Sprint 10 km in light armor.

So really, you like what they both provide, but don't like the word "achievement"? If they called them Battle Merits of Manliness would you except them? lol

Putting Achievements/Merits in a game these days is very popular, and almost guaranteed.

I often find myself grinding away for hours doing some stupid little thing in game that I would never do normally if the achievement wasn't there and when I finally "achieve" it I hardly ever feel accomplished.
THEN WHY ARE YOU DOING IT!?!?! lol. In other games Achievements usually don't effect game play, no bonus, nothing extra except maybe something cosmetic. They just provide additional objectives. The key is just not making them crazy. "Auraxian Riflemen: 4,000 kills" is ok, but "DoucheBro: Get in the way of 1,000 friendly bullets" is not.

I don't condone achievements or the attendant philosophy. This game sounds fun though!

I couldn't agree more. I enjoyed the whole seriousness thing of the medal/merit system, and they did add just a taste of some pretty good humor in there too.

I just wish the merits were just a little more visual- and maybe this time they will. The shoulder medal pad was cool, but I wouldn't mind other visual upgrades that you unlock as you progress down the tree to the more "uber" merits. It's kinda warhammer eske, i know, but eh.. I think that's kinda the reason why we are even having this discussion.

Merits are milestones

Achievements are goofy or challenging activities
