New twit pic from Higby with a sleek NC Light Assault, at night, and there's a giant moon-like sphere in the background!

Enjoy. :)

Wow. Yeah, that's quite the moonrise!:eek:

Makes me wonder if that's actually a planet -- say a blue gas giant like Uranus or Neptune -- and we're just fighting on one of its rocky moons....

It also makes me all the more hungry to see a night time shot on a moonless (planetless?) night.. :D

There's so much shit in the courtyard it's astounding. T-Ray was right about how they're not just buildings with stuff inside them, they're like actual bases. I wonder what's inside most of those little buildings.

Looks like I'm gonna get lost again inside of bases this time around.

Nice. I can't see players having massive green, red, purple, etc letters over their heads tagging them as adding anything to this game whatsoever.

It's like putting Leonardo DaVinci in glowing neon taped to the front of the Mona Lisa. Thanks for the info, but...

Yes, but evidently you don't realize how much of a problem it will be if we are forced, like we were in PS1, to use the name tags or DIE.

If there are NO tags, then no one can use them, so you don't have to use them to not be at a disadvantage.

It's like having a game where bouncing Pokemons are dancing over everyone's heads, and you have to have them in there to immediately identify friend or foe. It ruins the game's visuals to have them, but if you don't, you lose.

PS1 didn't really have much in the way of visuals, and the resolution of the textures and all was not high enough to really get away with not using name tags.

However, I think it would drastically increase the immersion to not have them in PS2. If you spot someone from 2000m, and you don't know if they are friend or foe, then you don't shoot them, just like in real warfare. Well, like most real warfare.

It was only at close range that people names appeared in PS1. I dont think they appeared at all at long range, just the cross hairs turned green when you went over them. Is that not acceptable?

I also remember that Higby stated they will have a BF3 like system where its names up close and a small symbol at long range.

Also does anyone think the bases should have spot lights? Would be cool if you could be able to direct light onto aircraft or infantry nearby.

Damn, these screen shots are looking more and more like the artwork images of games from the past.

If I hadn't seen Higby's footage from AGN night, I might have started to doubt they were real myself. This stuff is really looking great. This game has something in abundance that I don't think I've seen in many recent AAA FPS titles: Art Direction

Really good art direction, from the model designs, all the way to the atmospheric effects. It looks like a cohesive piece of art. I feel like they literally looked at concept art and then decided "How can we make the actual game look like this?"

Name tags would really ruin this look. I hope that friend and foe recognition works like this:

People in your squad always have their name floating over their head, but you can change it from displaying their name to displaying a tiny, less obtrusive dot, or you can turn it off entirely.

People on your empire have no floaty names or dots over their heads at all. Place your crosshairs over them and they get a glowing outline around them and their name appears above their head.

Enemies never have any glowing outline and never have their names floating above their heads. You can tell that they are enemies because they don't glow or have the name tag when you put your crosshairs over them.

Clear, clutterfree screen, while still having a nice way to avoid firing at friendlies.

Traak
2011-11-29, 09:03 AM
Yes, all that, and in order to spot an enemy, you will just have to use your ability to recognize him versus the background and foreground.

Which means the snoakers should be very lethal indeed. Unless they use tracers.

Hamma
2011-11-29, 11:24 AM
It would be fittycent btw.

And where am I at?!

Honestly, I think with the system Higby explained the screen will not look as cluttered and the names will not be huge even when up close.

The positioning of barricades on the lower right building's roof in the first picture is quite peculiar...

Why would you barricade a corner ? There is also some light coming from that corner. Could it be some entrance in the building from the top ?

With tracers and some light on armors, these will be fights with gorgeous light FX.

Are they going for that stylized look to make it look like an imperfect projection on a curved surface? Or is it just an odd camera angle?

Raymac
2011-11-30, 03:04 PM
I'd chalk it up to it just being the camera angle. It is a picture taken of a moniter after all. Plus the UI is still a WIP, so I wouldn't read too much into it at this point.

I don't know, but I like it.

A HUD should never get in the way, I prefer a much more out of the way HUD that just gives me the information I need. That being said, even with a simplistic look the HUD does make me think it is projected onto the helmet of the pilot with that curved distortion.

I can barely see it, so I can't judge it but it looks very small and out of the way. I like that to a degree but I hope we're still able to customize our HUDs with the flexibility that we did in PS1. Being able to grab them and resize them was a great feature. One really lacking today.

I am really looking forward to seeing the HUD in the vehicles. The impromptu sharing Higby gave us with the Nov podcast when he jumped in the Mosquito for a look at the first person view as a work in progress was still pretty amazing.

It wouldn't surprise me if they were trying to show a curved view of the HUD as if it was projected on a helmet visor, like others have said. Forgelight is that robust that the polished finished product should be amazing. A customizable HUD that essentially allowed you to filter out or in what you want to see on the HUD from the list of check box options would be the cherry on the top. Let alone being able to drag, place, and lock, the projected HUD displays into placement that fits your play style and then have it saved locally as your HUD preference.
