View Full Version : Ping, System Specs and Servers?

Hey guys, I have been wanting to play SWG for a long time now, but I recently just looked at Planetside, and Im tossing up whether to play SWG or Planetside. Now i originally thought SWG would be better since its an RPG (some professions didnt depend on ping like crafters) and a low ping is not really as necessary as Planetside (as Planetside is all PvP first person shooting) But looking at Planetside and reading through the site it does look like a whole lot of fun.
Now the only thing stopping me from making a clear decision right now is ping and servers. I am from Australia and only have a 56k connection (:( ) so I was wondering whether a low ping (cable/dsl) would be really necessary to play Planetside or not?
Also My pc is not really new either (600mhz, 192 RAM, gf2 gts 64mb) so will this be good enough to play Planetside? I play tribes 2 a lot and it seems to run it fine most of the time.....
And one last thing, is Australia getting a server for Planetside?
Thanks

Unfortunately you're comp won't be able to handle PS. The minimum beta requirements were 1ghz computer, 512mb of ram, 64mb vid card or better. For the actual game I think the processor speed may be a little bit lower but not by much. 256 mb of ram might be ok but that might just be pushing it.
Any problems with your connection will depend on what server you're playing on. I don't think you'll ping very well on a US East server from Australia with 56k. The game is supposed to be ok for 56k but connecting from outside the US to a us server at least would pose some problems.
No, I don't think there is going to be an Australia server. Is there going to be a korea server or some Asia server? thought there was going to be one eventually but who knows.

Just as I thought :(
And for the server business, Australia isnt going to have a SWG server either but it wont be too bad for that style of game. This is 2 games coming out that dont accomodate the whole playing community (Australia is a LARGE country) and we get no server.....sounds a bit crappy to me :(

Officially, there will be an Asia based server, so your 56k should handle decently. Also if you want to run some bandwitdth tests, to see how fast your connection Really is, you might get an idea of how high the latency is going to be.

Actually, Australia does have its own server, so you'll probably be fine.

Not for Planetside it doesn't.

Then how come when you create a outfit, one of the options for your server location is australia? I'm positive there is one in Ausralia. If there isn't, which I doubt, then that Asian one will do.

I'm 99% sure that there isn't an Austrailian server, but they would probably include Austrailia as an outfit option so people will know where it's based.

I thought I heard rumors of a New Zealand server, but I can't honestly remember what SOE game it was for. I think you're still hosed regardless. Check out some great singleplayer games like Sof2, Morrowind or Vietcong. (and pray for bb)

Damn it. Why'd they make it so misleading? How come they don't have Asia, or any of the other continents as options then? I want answers!
Morrowind :drools: I loved that game.

me too!, as a matter of fact, I'm organizing my Deadric armor and weapons inside my clan HQ thing (forgot the name), I joined Hillalu considering I was a wood elf thief.

I've played the games a couple times over. Firt I was a wood eleven thief in House Halialu ( I can't remember how to spell anything now) like you, then I was a Redguard warrior in House Redoran, then I was a Nordic battlemage in House Telvanni. I don't have my thief file anymore, but in my other 2 I have a great collection of the unique weapons I find in the game.

The bad thing about Morrowind was that the damaging magic was about the least powerful shit I've ever seen. I just enchated random pieces of clothing like my shirt could unlock any door, and my pants let me hover:D . Also the combat got boring after a while, but the gameplay was great, and the graphix pwned. Too bad I got it for the box, and now I can't get the expansion

lol, same thing here monkey. I wish I could see Almalexia and the other God. That would be awesome. (After killing Vivec and the other 2, I could fulfil my revenge and reign supreme!)

Thanks for the info guys. I really hope Australia or Asia get a server as some of you have suggested, but then again, my system might not run this game too well either.....:(
I am thinking of buying SWG and Planetside now, sign up for a month for both and play them both, to see which one appeals to me more (and my system/connection ;) )
How many of you guys are from Australia/New Zealand on these boards?
PS - Broadband isnt an option because it is not available where I live. Dialup and Satellite are the only things I can get :(
Thanks

Ahm... your computer wont run either SWG or Planetside. It's too slow and too old. I'd be less worried about my internet connection and server location, and more worried about getting a decent computer. And as to people suggesting games like Morrowind... what are you smoking and can I get some, please?

What's wrong with Morrowind? It's awesome. Sure, its story can't compare to FF7, and its fighting can't compare to other action/adventure game, but it's one of the best RPGs out there IMO. It's a lot of fun and one of the very few totally non-linear RPGs. I love it, and so do they. I'm definatly gonna get Xenosaga in June, and gonna play that baby all summer. I hear there are half-hour cutscenes in that! Well, I'm going off-topic now, but I expect there to be a server somewhere in the east. Don't worry, but you should get a new comp, or at least do some upgrading.

Nothing wrong with Morrowind aside from the fact that his computer can't run it. I mean, unless he wanted to play the turn-based version.

I know. What I meant was I'll get it then because I just don't have the time right now to play the game as long as it demands. It'll take hours to get anywhere. The cutscene to play time ratio is like 2:1. I need more time to dedicate myself to it. ( I love my games )

And I heard that some of the PS2s (not to be confused with Planetside) couldn't read the disk correctly. Something about messing up with the dual-layer aspect... switching from gameplay to cinematics or some crap.

Ahh I c. I heard that the cutscene to playtime ratio was actually more like 3:1 but I dunno. I'm gonna pick it up this wekend and check it out.

Yeah, I was thinking more along the lines of 3:1, but it didn't seem right. Heh, I guess it is. Damn, it's gonna be one hell of a story with that much video...
