This might be better in some suggestion area and I'm not even sure if you can conveniently do it, but is it really necessary to make a thread about a news that only has a link to the front page news in PSU, which then has a link to the actual news?
Couldn't you just have the forum thread link direclty to the news? :D I'm sorry, but this has been digging me for a while now lol :D
But I guess it could be that you pretty much have to do it that way for it to work or smth.

STOP RIGHT THERE!
Before Anyone posts now "OMIGOD ITS GOING ON CONSOLE", NO ITS NOT!
Higby pretty much 100% just confirmed that, AGAIN. He said a future planetside game, in the sense of "some other game, not Planetside 2".

Honestly, whoever freaks out about PS2 going to console needs to take a deep breath and think about how absurd that is... There is a reason BF3 is only 32 players for console... that's ONLY 32 players... not 300+ players EACH faction. lol, get your head of yo butt! :D

If its a success and they think they can make money in that department they will.
Well.. I think it would need to wait for the next gen consoles, tbh.
It probably wouldn't be the same servers as PS on computer, due to the constraints of controllers requiring different gameplay mechanics.

So, to me the possibility of a future PlanetSide game on a console seems like a pretty good bet.SNAP!

1. Yes, it is totally going to go console one day. At launch? I highly doubt it. But one day it will be on the next gen of consoles. When the game was first announced, Smedley all but openly told us that it will come out on console. He didn't say it outright, but he gave us the strongest hint he possibly could.
2. The bit that Hamma quoted on the page about the technical difficulties remains my number 1 concern. I'm still haunted by the days of slideshow-esque framerates and needing to update all my hardware and drop all visual options to the bare minimum just to reach a playable level. Compound that with the stunning visuals and details we see, and I'm still skeptical that this game is going to run smooth. I'm extremely hopeful, but skeptical.

great new interview!
and this time matt put some emphasis on the pvp factor!
i always asked to make clear for everyone what the real difference between ps2 and other fps is and he found good words there!
the thing that other games script big ai battles because the players want the feel of big battles, but ps2 will deliver the same intense big battles all without scripts and ai but with real players in every tank or airplane!
that´s what no halo can do! ;-)
now please go ahead and put this statement on the "about the game" section of planetside2.com! very far up on the site! so that even the tl:dr kiddys get it!

another good point in the interview is, that matt does not want to deliver anything until the whole dev team is proud as hell!
that´s exactly what we veterans want! just stay strong and stand up to the suits! whatever happens, don´t let them ruin the game by insisting on a release date! if the beta unviels the need of a delay, put your balls on the table and delay the release!
i did a lot of beta tests, and a lot of games with great potential released just too early and buggy as hell, causing me to leave these games at release. and none of these games ever recovered to its full potential, so i was not the only one who didn´t want to pay for games in such a bad state.
give planetside 2 the release it deserves, and i am sure it will take off like a rat from an aquaeduct!

Wonderfull to read, gives me hope to read things. Lots of companies develop and shut the **** up about games and suffer from players loosing hype.
Tbh cant wait for it, and as soon as there are some more news about a beta start/release date, im gonna upgrade my rig to enjoy this^^

Higby said "Huge ones." hehehehehehe
As long as I can run it on my rig on medium (i5, GTX 460, 4GB RAM) at 60fps, I'll be happy. The wait for the beta is killing me though, I've been enjoying PS as of late but I really want a game that isn't stuck in the era of dial-up.

I'm a bit worried about how Higby speaks of challanges thrown to the devs concerning the scale of the game... I feel they have problems with that...
Shogun
2012-01-12, 03:10 PM
i am sure they had problems with that, if it was an easy task to do we would have 50 massive scale topgames in the last 8 years.
but the engineers at soe seem to be the most experienced in the world, regarding this problem. and they would not take beta signups if they were still too unhappy with the general netcode and had no idea how to manage thousands of players at once.

To quote JFK ...
... We choose to [] do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win ...

I'm guessing they have an unprecedented LOD system built into the engine. From what I understand, this is one of the hardest parts of any modern game to program. I could imagine it being even more of a technical challenge when you're dealing with hundreds of independently controlled players on screen.

I like what I'm reading about the beta being as long as it needs to be to figure everything out.

Looks like they have the right idea about beta testing and not doing a beta marketing.

Nicely said, but is PS2 going to be Apollo 11 or Apollo 13? I'm cautiously optimistic, and extremely hopeful.

Nice interview. I think I could probably show that to friends and they could get a pretty good idea of the game.
Edit: I'm sorry, but that Higby look must be added to the cosmetic stuff.

If that's not already in the game, that's another thing we'll have to be whiny about through beta.

nice and adequade quote, cycles!
i still think if anyone can pull off a game like ps2 with thousands of players, it´s the guys who know everything about ps1 and if we like it or not, it´s soe ;-)
(did you know that the most important german word is Hurtz!? )
can´t wait to see the game in action and to experience the feeling of the new code working! if the netcode can simulate the feeling of any other fps i am a happy panda!
and the ps2 coders will get their place in walhalla or on the olymp next to zeus.
i would think the reputation that will arise with a successful ps2 is worth a lot of work and challange!
oh and higby, is there any job to get on the ps2 team? i want to have a job as "odd" as yours ;)

As everybody else has said. Great interview, the game sounds like its coming along great.
I really loved the part where Higby said "We won’t be shipping anything until we’re all proud of it." That is absolutely awesome and that is what I love to hear. It lets me know that Planetside 2 is going rock!! Keep up the good work guys.
