View Full Version : Suggest new max abilitys

i first wanted to post on the no more lockdown thread, but since it will be about all maxes i started a new one.
we know that the old max special abilitys are gone. the vs will not fly and everybody will have a shield, so the nc need something new, too. and tr seem to hate their lockdown.
so what would you all like best? maxes seem to be in the work right now, so now is the time to melt your brains and present some ideas!
my ideas:
vanu get a energy overload, that change the projectiles to something resembling the lasher. a direkt hit on enemy triggers some random chaineffect lightning hitting some targets that stand near the hit.
or the overload grants a damage over time effect like plasma grenade, but only on direct hit.
the terrans could get a barrelspread. so they have 2 fire modes. normal mode fires with high accuracy, spread mode enlarges the cone of fire AND doubles the bullet output. this would be good for supression fire on a large group and would fit with the many little bullets theme of tr.
the nc could get a tractor beam to hold or slow single targets. that would help against single soldiers circling the max to stay out of firecone, but would be not very useful against big groups. and it would be more useful for scattermaxlike units to keep the enemy at an effective position, but would be less useful on aa maxes. but i guess that would apply to all 3 abilitys the like.
so what do you think? do you have other ideas?

Momentum - MAX passive ability triggered when running. Causes knock-back on 'softies'. Animation & sound included.
Strut (cool animation!!) - All MAX units exerts over-confidence and imposing dread upon their enemies. Walking and gunning is stabilized by the MAX suit. Zero reticule expansion when walking comparable to other armors. Overlaps [WALK] key.

Well, the TR should get higher firepower if they cant move... perhaps balance that with some sort of "pop-up" plates (only useable whilst stationary...) that give the MAX a bit of cover. Effectively adding some deflection (if modeled), like self activated "hull-down", or just adds hitpoints for simplicity.
If all MAX's get shields... perhaps the extra unused power from movement could be diverted to shields for more shield strength while locked-down.

Stick to metallic surfaces. Basically walking on walls, ceilings, vehicle exteriors, etc. Would have to be on a short timer, and might be tough to balance.

love it, but i guess balancing would really be hell...
... you know, our airplanes are propably made of metallic surfaces?

I suggest a BloodBowl Style "Throw Team Mate" skill, allowing you to fling a friendly infiltrator over a high wall into an enemy held position.

Some kind of super melee would be funny, like suggested above something like FIST or HULK SMASH ability, essentially just a short range melee attack which does huge damage and maybe punts people back a few meters, great for clearing blocked doorways and keeping the fear in lights/Rexos around maxes.
Some sort of overcharge would be cool as well, weapons increase rate of fire for a short period but then overheat and go into cooldown mode where you can't fire for a few seconds, allowing a higher burst damage on maxes but with a trade off where they need cover during cooldown.
Also some kind of thump/stomp where dropping from high heights such as gal drops or off towers/walls they can free fall into the ground and cause a huge crash doing damage to things below them and shaking everyones screen, great for jumping off base walls and towers on to vehicles camping below.

being able to grab a soldier at point blank and really throw him away would be fun! like a wrestling move. throw away or backbreaker on the knee or some other cool move.
just to force soldiers to keep a little distance.
every faction gets their own badass wrestling finishing move. like knee-backbreaker, turnaround and fist ;) , lift and snap neck, hug and kiss (for vs)

Auto run (bring it back)
Some of my favorite memories are auto-running a ways with all the guys until we reach our destination. It's like a perfect calm before the storm for me....only we're the storm.

I thought max's are still going to have auto-run. I mean, why wouldn't they?!
I think the VS max should get an ability to greatly increase acceleration rate, turn rate, and a resistance to momentum (make sharp turns without losing speed).
TR max's should get either an increased rate of fire buff that has an overheat mechanic or a short cooldown ability that causes a shotgun burst of fire with a high ammo cost.
I think the Shield buff for NC is still good.

Not strictly a max ability, but I'd love it if tanks/sunderers/etc had an external MAX passenger slot where they just stood on a small platform and grabbed on.
Also, a MAX being able to 'deploy' at the base of a wall, spoon its hands, and vault infantry up to the top.

Vastly increase their rate of turn, and lethality up close. That way Prancer and Limprist, the enemy softies, will have as little chance of surviving as anyone else stupid enough to get that close.
MAXes being owned one-on-one by lesser classes, especially up close, is idiotic.

And if you make it so a lone soldier is fodder to a MAX you end up with the BFR's problem
MAXes exchange agility for firepower and armour, in a straight up fight standing still MAXes should win easily, if the trooper can jump around like a tart he should be able to lay same pain on the MAX, Think scount/heavy fight in TF2, heavy wins mostly but a skilled scout can win.
We don't want it to become rock paper scissors as that is dull.

I think how powerful MAXs will be depends on if they are just another class of infantry, or if they are a specialized thing with added restrictions over regular infantry as they were in PS1. A max needed to be rather hard to kill and lethal since they were on a 5 minute timer. If they are regular soldiers on a regular timer, they can be more like the heavies in TF2 or Tribes.

Maybe even to the point of having light vehicle armor, highly resistant to small arms. I'm coming up short on ideas for special abilities though. Riot shield?

Its best not to listen to traak, he likes it so all the EZ mode things are heaps easy.

Or how about a diaper upgrade, so they don't have to get out of their armor to do their business.
