So, we're plugging along just fine and I've pulled together feedback from you folks and from other places. We had a discussion yesterday, which I won't talk about, but I just have one question:

Paintball or Lazertag? Your preference?

If not, other activities geared towards the PS2 player? Well, besides drinking. we already know that will happen, as we have the pool party and unofficial pub meetups. :)

Laser Tag cuz in my mind more females likely to play. Oh yeah. Of course, though I wouldn't be going and I'm thinking on an fourth-person perspective.

The PS2 players all get rewards. Other games are shabby-shitz and will so want to play PlanetSide2 after knowing Fan Faire rewards. Oh yeaaah. More players -- more awesome.

I happen to LOVE paintball (I have 5 full sets of equipment to bring friends out with us), but I think that Lazer Tag is much more accessible and inflicts no pain, making it much more likely to draw up a spontaneous group of players. After paintball, you need to shower, you're covered in welts (albeit small ones), and it can just be a more jarring experience in general. I agree that fewer females may be inclined to "give it a try" if they've never played before (compared to how likely I think they would "give lazer tag a try").

Now, this is just the opinion of someone who is definitely not going to be able to attend Fan Faire. But that's what I think :-)

Give the VS laser tag equipment and the rest of us paintball gear.

I would want paintball but only if we had our own group. Most places require a minimum amount of people to limit it to outsiders. Also, I would recommend having rules in place so that people can't bring their super-customized gun that fires so many rounds per minute so fast that you could kill someone. Most parks are pretty good about making sure those don't get in but basically it sucks when one team has all/mostly rentals and the other team has top of the line ownage gear.

Other ideas: Dune Buggies, Go Karts if there is a legit place, dev-dunk-tank, and a raffle for a new gaming station, etc. with smaller prizes for runner-ups.

I would recommend laser tag for general accessibility. Paintball tends to be a messier, higher maintenance, do it yourself experience. Of course I've no idea whether I'll even be at this. . . >_>

Would like to play PlanetSide. :)

But since that is not on the poll... Laser Tag as it is 'safer' and more accessible.

As a former competitor and referee, I want to show my love for the sport of Paintball. As for an activity for Fan Faire attendees, I'd have to support Lazertag. Paintball hurts. It's a good hurt, but more than most who don't have much experience can bare. It's also more likely that an injury would occur on a paintball course. People can keep better control of their bodies when they have a little box on them that is beeping. I have seen all kinds of bad come out of someone flailing about while getting pelted by paintballs that are traveling at 400mps. Paintball is very messy. Destroys clothing and can take out an eye.

Paintball is also very expensive.

While paintball is better than lasertag, airsoft hurts less and is also better in many many ways.

Not that I'm going.

dev-dunk-tank

i think it was said in the other fan faire thread, but it should be a drunk tank...for everyone.

Also, I chose the pew pews for reasons that other people have already said. Accessibility, possible equipment issues, etc.

Also, it moved to the fall? (October 18th – 21st 2012, SOE poll winner last year. I don't think there are official dates yet.) I will try to make it, but not having it in the summer makes it difficult.

So I'm probably not going to go to FanFaire because I went in 2006 (my outfit took on the devs and non-outfit PS players in laser tag and destroyed them), a trip to Vegas just isn't in the cards when I've got Hawai'i, diving, West Point Combat Classic paintball game, and Dragon*Con lined up for this year. So I'm not going to vote but if I did, it would be for lazer tag. Paintball is going to leave your attendees bruised and tired. Probably not the best idea.

Which brings me to this:

As a former competitor and referee, I want to show my love for the sport of Paintball. [...] Paintball is very messy. Destroys clothing and can take out an eye.
So this is gonna make me sound like a hard-ass and a rules lawyer, but I can't let it slide. If you're a competitor and ref, then you should be aware of the fact that proper safety equipment and safety-minded referees pretty much negate any eye injury barring player stupidity (again, refs should be on point with this). I'm sorry but unless you're a complete idiot, there's absolutely no reason to take a paintball in the eye. I've been playing this sport for over 18 years and I compete in tournaments and manage a very successful and well-traveled award-winning team on the east coast, playing multiple games per year all year round. I have NEVER, NOT EVER, once seen an eye put out by someone who was wearing an actual, proper paintball mask at a certified field. And to see someone claim that you could lose an eye, especially someone touting themselves as a competitor and ref, really grinds my shit because it's a black mark on the sport to someone who doesn't know any better and never played the game.

Don't give it a bad name. Point blank, the only time anyone loses an eye is if they're unsafe and the refs aren't on point to catch it - and I wouldn't play at a field that had crappy refs or no regard for player safety. You're more likely to get shot in a mugging than you are losing an eye at paintball. Seriously, watch what you say because you could potentially turn people off to the sport or give them a bad impression.

too bad vegas is not on my continent ;-)

but cheers for giving your players such a great opportunity to have fun with the devs!
that´s really rare!

paintball would rock more, but i guess lazertag would be the safer choice for the reasons already mentioned. and after all, nobody wants to hurt a dev by accident and cause a delay of release ;-)

but if you want to make it the best event ever, customise the equipment and do some planetside paintjobs on the guns, the boxes and the protectors!. make them empire specific ;-)

Paint ball. Laser tag is rather kidish.

Haha, the fact your considering things like this geared towards FPS players is making me really consider hopping out there for Fan Faire... it's awesome to see how receptive you've been to our suggestions!

Lazer tag, no doubt in my mind. You can play more games faster and more spontaneously, there's no gear to wear except for the lazer vest, more overall acceptance from the general population, no mess, LAZERS, most likely a really neat pavilion or arena-style thing that can incorporate more than just running around shooting the lazers at each other (I played at an arena in NC that had a base defense scenario, much like PS actually O.O)

Nothing against the sport of paintball, just think lazer tag would have a better chance of participation.

Paint ball is much more fun and much more of an experience.
