On January 29th, 2012 a web browser game made by MuchDifferrent (http://www.muchdifferent.com/1000PlayerFPS/) will attempt to land in the Guinness Book of World Records by hosting a first-person shooter supporting up to 1000 simultaneous players on a single map.

In their Gamer info screen, the original Planetside is given credit for the current holder of player density.
What is the current world record?

This game is a First Person Shooter (FPS) game. The most player dense known commercial FPS game is PlanetSide which supports 399 players in the same zone. As our game is played in the browser and is made in Unity - it is very possible that we break a few other records as well.

I certainly hope if they manage to get an fps player number record that it's a short lived victory when Planetside2 captures that title soon. If you want to know more, Check out their web page here (http://www.muchdifferent.com/1000PlayerFPS/) for details and how to participate.

I agree.

Wow, that's pretty cool. Or course, looking at the screenshots, it's no where near the graphical details of PS2 or PS1 for that matter. They should really categorize the record into genres. A web based game vs. a full 3D game engine shouldn't be compared with each other...

I could have sworn Planetside did 3000+ for a world record event back in the day. Cannot believe battles were so small, it felt like thousands all the time lol.

I guess World War II Online was not considered a FPS? It certainly had more than 1000 simultaneous players on a single map, and I would call it a FPS.

Yeah they did a record attempt in PS1 on the test server which actually wasnt nearly as full as the servers were daily per continent. And despite the rumors of it not happening, ps1 at the time had 166 per side, up to 499 players. But the record attempt on the test server didnt get very close to that sadly, however my guess is they prob got an official count on the regular servers at some point.

PS2 will shatter this new record attempt in rather short order. But cool to see others working on the technology for this kind of stuff.

You could never see all of them at once, it was an odd hybrid thing, you could set how many you would see at once i think up to like 64, maybe 128, or even as little as like 16. It was not uncommon to get shot by someone you never saw. Keep in mind it was designed with 56k in mind so it had to set some strong limits.

The record is for all those players being completely interactive with each other somethin that ww2ol didnt quite do.

Didn't Planetside support 498 players in the beginning? 166 per side. Later it was lowered to 133. As there was a way to avoid the endless queues (exploit! I don't think that many people knew about it though, otherwise the server would have probably crashed), we probably had some fights with up to 550 players on a continent I recon. Good ol' days.

I don't remember anything like that. I've seen a good 500+ though during a test server. I had a powerful computer and it lagged. Cease fire then they'd cycle the base color so everyone would shoot up to max BR. When that cease fire ended it was a bloodbath of 5 fps action :P

Anybody know the exact number of people that will be in game on one continent? IS it 500v500v500?

Well Higby and Smedley have said "thousands", but a specific limit or number hasn't been disclosed. I imagine it'll be figured out during beta testing.

You could just edit the first post.

It would be a nice thing to throw into their Marketing and PR, "On 'Month' 'Day' Planetside 2 will break records"

Fuck, I'm starting to get concerned whether my 1,7mbit download bandwidth will even suffice for this game lol.

Way above what should ideally be required. (Speaking as someone who does network programming in their spare time). If it makes you feel better I'm using a 768 kbps download.

Also don't expect to see 1500 players in a single spot in PS2. Like I said before you need to use statistics and poisson processes to calculate the actual number of players in the game in your area. In layman's terms unless spawning is instant there are times when players are dead and are heading into the battle. Also when they are inside of the base and portal culled (or vice-verse when you are inside and they are outside). Also when players aren't moving resulting in no state changes for a few frames (for instance, a sniper or cloaker). hmm I was going to show you naive calculations using Quake style networking with 1K players, but I kind of scared myself a little bit with that calculation. Suffice to say they are probably better than a naive calculation.

Just a quick bit of bragging. The FAQ had said that the last game to have the most players in a single match was MAG at 256. I contacted their company, MuchDifferent, and let them know of their error. Their CEO Christian Lönnholm asked me to give them a citation. When I finally found one they updated their FAQ.

However, I also made them aware that Planetside 2 was aiming for a 1000 players.

I'm sorry! I have betrayed the community!

Nope, no betray there. MuchDifferent aims to provide the technical stuff needed to have such big games. If they are succesful, then a lot of games could benefit. They could propably enable a lot of smaller companies to build big games, and thats a damn good thing to do.

I remember reading it on the news thing but it said server and not island.

Uh, if you didn't notice, Planetside did the same thing. They had a visual player limit, just like ww2ol. In ww2ol you could set the visual limit to 64 or 128, with preference given to displaying enemies first. With planetside, you didn't have a choice, and I think the limit was 64. You could NOT see all 399 people on the continent at the same time. In big battles, players disappear, and many times you'd see only 5 guys standing next to you. Even planetside 2 will have to cull the visual player count somehow, I'm guessing. All big games do it.

The visual limit was just a bigger deal in ww2ol than planetside, because you have tanks that can engage at 4000m, whereas planetside has a view distance of only 500m. That's one reason the graphics of planetside were so much better, because the view distance was relatively short. ww2ol had to display about 80 times the terrain square footage on the screen than planetside, thus the polygon count had to suffer. Hence why "shoebox" games like BF3 and CoD have awesome graphics, since only a small part of the terrain needs to be displayed. Not true in MMO games. But I'm very surprised and excited that PS2 looks so good, yet displays so much terrain. It's impressive.

Its sad because this record is going to get destroyed like 6 months after when PS2 releases lmao!

It partially comes down to...

Smeds @ 2011 SOE Fan Faire

From what I have heard off the reservation in San Diego from the pit is the engine is quite eloquently written and ready for prime time. From what we have seen directly from Higgles and crew in the community pod casts is high praise for ForgeLight.

To my understanding Forgelight manages rapid exponential growth of polygons in large scale settings like Iron Mike (Tyson) when he is on his meds. This is a positive step in managing the resources needed to push the render/display code from the server side and then manage resources for higher average fps and full render values on the user client side. At the end of the video the part from Nvidea about the phys-x engine is just as important. For me the best part about the N phys-x engine is registering strikes on the Hit Box and Collision detection which can lend to a better Planetside 2.

With the graphics and phys-x engine in check, my concern will turn too how they manage any Memory Leaks or Cache issues in the Client. The other part of this equation is going to be the location of the server clusters.

if you think putting 2000 players on one map isn´t enough of a challange for forgelight and the devs, convince them to give every player a portal gun ;-)

Yea. I bet they say.

'Registered PS1 players get 1 day early access to reserve outfit and player names starting now!' ....... then the entire day for me is spent downloading the client... :(

I say we got for double in PS2. (Confined to 1-2 hexes of course, if it were simply to be online that wouldn't be as fun)
