I know several who go to IGN.com for gaming news, and today there was an article about 2012 shooters and the almighty Planetside 2 isn't mentioned at all. I know it really hasn't been confirmed but it has been speculated. There are other titles listed that don't have an official release date, and are really much lower in expectations. If you all ready have a gamespy log in just use it, or make one so you can comment and help spread the word.

What the Hell!? That's like listing "popular sources of heat" and omitting THE SUN.

It just means SOE hasn't paid them yet.

The only ones I personally agree with are Starhawk and Bioshock Infinite.

Syndicate is a joke.

Halo 4 is failbound.

The Darkness 2, while actually pretty good, doesn't really deserve to be in there over Planetside 2.

Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2? The sequel to one of the trashiest shovelware titles ever? Okay...

On the note of exclusivity, PC gamers should see the release of two online shooters this year. Both Firefall and Tribes Ascend are currently in beta and should release later this year. Both games feature fast-paced futuristic gameplay. If gamers are lucky, MMO FPS PlanetSide 2 might just see the light of day before the end of the year.
Is that not a mention, or has he just edited that in?

Planetside 2 is still under the radar for a lot of people. There's a lot of folks out there who don't even know what the original Planetside is. All we have right now for the casual observer is a one minute trailer for PS2 which doesn't say anything at all. Go watch that announcement trailer. You see a bunch of dudes fighting over a tower. You see a couple tanks then those gunships start flying in. Sure for fans of Planetside it's exciting, but to anyone else watching that they likely won't care.

I don't blame IGN at all for not including PS2 on their list. If anything I think Planetside 2 is going to come as a big surprise to a lot of people

Wow, I really thought he didn't. Like I read this whole article very slowly twice just to make sure I could be accurate with "not even mention".

Edit: Yeah I'm 100% there was no bold/blue "Planetside 2" link before either, so I guess they tossed it in

But let this be a reminder, if you see PS2 has been left out say something

In this thread: Inflated sense of significance.

PS2 is a reasonably big deal, because so few things like it exist - MMOFPS solely focused on PVP.
PS2 isn't that big a deal because so many things like it exist - There are many large multiplayer FPS titles.
Compared to the big console titles it's small fry. Compared to other MMOs it's teensy.
Even in its heyday, Planetside just wasn't all that big.
I'd say Dust is more significant because its part of a currently popular MMO's universe.

In short, PS2 has the "good enough" problem. You can play Battlefield for pretty darn large FPS battles. Does adding in 100 more people really matter? Probably not for FPS folks.
You can play EVE or WoW or SWTOR for lots of people and PVP and persistence and depth. Do people that care about those things really wan to add FPS to the mix at the sacrifice of large amounts of non-pvp depth? Again, maybe, maybe not.

PS2, if it's going to get big, is going to have to be a "grower" title that doesn't have the release peak and decline but a more gradual build. And it seems like that's what SOE has set out to do.

Planetside 1, in its prime, was a time when:

1. The internet wasn't what it is today.

2. MMOs weren't as popular as they are today.

3. Planetside was ahead of its time to its detriment.

4. The Steam buzz didn't balloon the PC gamer market.

Surely it deserves more recognition, if for nothing else than being a true MMOFPS, than ****ing Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2.

What? IGN missed PS2?

Lemme take care of this...

edit: err, Planetside 2 IS mentioned? Its there, right besides Firefall. They just dont think release is anywhere close, and assume we are lucky if we see it released in 2012.

It's a derogatory term for the mountain dew drinking, backwards hat wearing, madden-call of duty playing college age stoner potheads that populate a lot of the gaming world.

Or you can just shorten that to "People who find Bio-dome funny."

Slap it on Steam for free and it will be ok for years.
release some hats for TF2 too, lol.

The fps gaming industry is starving of innovation.
Pc gaming is not dead but has really slowed down to console standards.
Planetside went on sale the year halo literally introduced a decent fps experience on console (you gotta give em credits for this) but with no multiplayer experience at all.
It was the Call of duty 1 year.PS1 was and still is an unparalled experience.
Now, almost 10 years later the market really needs novelty.
People already are getting tired with those lame war games, you can start reading it everywhere.
IMO a lot of people will be pleased in finding some innovation and PS2 can make it this time if well supported by the community.

gaming sites never covered indie games like braid, minecraft, terraria etc until they become mainstream.
they talk about what THEY THINK people want, not what people want.
Let the PS2 community grow and there will be no need to advertise at all.

Nope, Halo doesn't have the credits for that.

Golden Eye and Perfect Dark, both on Nintendo 64, got the credits for that.
And they both had awesome local multiplayer.

But that's off-topic.

Anyway, no matter what people might think about IGN, that site has a big audience, and thus I actually think it's too bad that it's not showing some interest to Planetside 2 yet.

This bothered me in the same way there article about Dust 514 bothered me. I am looking forward to Dust 514 but the article IGN posted about it was labeling it so many things (groundbreaking, the largest scale FPS ever, etc.) and I could not help but feel aggravated as a PS player. Planetside has never gotten it's due credit. Games like Firefall and Dust 514 get credit for being the most immersive and "largescale" shooting titles despite the fact that PS2 trumps them in scale in every way. I'd even say the original PS trumps those games in pure scale of gameplay.

This is the sad uninformed world we inhabit, but I count on PS2 making it's point when it hits the market!

This. While I understand the article might have been edited since it's first being posted, Planetside 2 IS in there now.
