If I were to upgrade my system, buying everything new except my monitor, keyboard/mouse, optical drives and hard drive, would it be legal to use the copy of Windows on that hard drive in the otherwise entirely new computer?

Who knows? Who cares? Big bad Microsoft cant do jack sh!t to you. In my oppinion, just do it. My dad has done it with windows 98 and windows XP, and nothing bad happened. But, if you respect microsoft, and dont want to break their user agreement thingy, than dont.

it is legal to use 1 copy of windows per 1 computer, so if the other one didnt exist in any real sece, then yes.

I doubt even microsoft cares that much frankly. They control the entire computer OS market anyways...

...fucking microsoft...:D

I dunno, I'm paranoid :scared: maybe they're watching me right now (that was sarcasm just so you know). It is illegal but if you don't mind doing illegal stuff, then go ahead.;)

Who cares if it is legal or not? What.. scared of the Microsoft Police?

Piracy is a common thing these days. Hamma is a pirate.. of sorts. ;)

According to the license, you're allowed to have one installed copy of windows at a time. It doesn't matter to them if you change what hard drive it's on every day (of course, you may have to call them for new activation number since you're changing everything... unless you just go get a serial that doesn't need to be activated :))

I wouldn't take XP pro if they payed me $400. Well, mabey, I could use it as a coaster or something. The $400 would be nice.

lol I love to watch people get into this microsoft rage thing, its quite funny. but I shall refrain from any debates in this thread. As was said earlier. Its still your computer and you are still using the copy you bought, doesn't really matter what you put it on.

Illegal.......but......

No one on PSU uses Kazaa or Grokster or anything like that right? Downloading movies as they hit the theatre or before right?

Ok I admit it I might break the law every once in a while, but fuck its just a OS, like jaywalking its illegal. Now D/Ling a cracked Windows XP from Kazaa might be pushin it or something on the lines of that(for example only flamers I know it would take for fucking ever and a day)

Matrix 2 HAHAHAHAA!!!!!! Now that would be worth a lil dirty hands IMO!

It's not even a question... if you only have it installed on one system it doesn't matter. You own the License and have the right to transfer it at need...

And who pays 400 bucks for XP pro... 150 at the most, everyone has an old copy of 98 or ME lying around for the UpGrade path :)

I agree that the price of this crap is getting a bit outa hand... but just think if all those nice people who steal it and use it... like the Millions of Chinese who have bootlegs, if all of them had paid ... oh let's say 20 bucks, how much lower it would be for all of us.

Bootlegging doesn't hurt anyone but the Honest consumers... we have to pay out the nose.

(And to be honest if it wasn't my bussiness and therefore I have an interest in being above the board, I'd probably be Bottlegging like everyone else)

With XP you need to reregister the software to the new computer. Call up MS support. When you install XP you need to register. When you do so, it takes a snapshot of your system. IF you reinstall your own software on another machine, MS will know if you don't register in so many days. Also, XP will not work after so many days of no registration. I think it's like 60 times or so.

MS Office XP is the same way.

I know, kinda shitty. But they need their money.

I would pay 400 for WinXP. I like the remote connectivity feature. I think it's worth it.

It's legal, you pay for 1 product key that can be used to have 1 active product... dosn't mention where you have your active product ;)

and get a XP pro if you don't want the activation crap hehe.

That is funny, because the Goverment bitched at microsoft for putting too much "phone home" shit in it. Which is NOT good when you have XP running on NSA, Pentagon, or CIA computers.

Last I heard MS was going to open the source code to them.
