Regarding the answer on the front page.

Both, A great area to scout out enemy movements and a great area to dish some damage with the sniper rifle.

I was going to say, was it a rhetorical question? Both seems like the obvious answer (who better to perform recon at that range than a sniper?)

Now think how well a suitable camo will blend in there?

If just the character/environment "textures" (i dont know proper terminology) match, it will be close to impossible to spot someone with a fitting camo in there until they move/start firing at you :D

This sorta comes to mind:

yep I plan on having 1 camo myself for each environment. That TR blends in pretty well.

Well, as you can see, the armor the guy is wearing in the pic has a very small amount of faction colours left.

Maybe buyable camos for each environment (woodland, dessert, snow). Your standard soldier has no need of these so they are unavailable to them. Would certainly make the recon guys stand out.

It could be looked at that way. But almost anyone can do recon!

You would be doing it wrong then, as you would leave a silhouette. You should always have something other than the sky in the background if you dont want to be seen :D

Since we know almost zero about the PS2 Game Mechanics, this response is based on the current incarnation of Planetside: Aftermath.

Three words... Stealth Assault Engineer

Stealth Assault Engineer is one of the more frustrating out of balance builds as a ground pounder you have to deal with. Because it makes perfect sense that someone can move at the same rate as you (via an implant) under stealth and then perform an action (like placing a mine or a turrent) and never become visible. Of course they are standing right near you and use it in order to drop the mine or turret and stealth gank you.

Predator like light wave variance to give the effect of a "shimmering outline" is going to be one of the harder things to find balance with. It's ripe for abuse in an unbalanced game mechanic scenario. But as we don't know squat really about the nutz and boltz of PlanetSide 2 and what we mostly get is still shots that drive more questions then answers, who the fuck really knows if this is a better recon or sniper position.

For me personally, I prefer elevation and topography to my advantage when I do snipe. Tracking someone on the Z-Axis is a pro skill and most run and gunners are focused on what is on there linear line of sight.

I think light assualt would do recon best given their meneuverability, they can get on all the cliffs and rocks and anywhere they need to be.

I'll be doing recon in a Prowler.

Did anyone else think about a cliche horror movie moment looking at this ss? I'm talking about the part where a girl and a guy are about to get fukeefukee inside a car and the guy gets eaten...

EDIT: just imagine the same screenshot at nighttime...

My cousin will love this place. =3

It would be awesome if there was some rocks you could hide under and could easily snipe anyone that takes cover under them.

I'd take it for Recon, not sure how suitable it would be for a sniper.
Once I start to "pew pew" peeps are gonna find me fast (aerial comes to mind), but just some "peeping" might be safer to hold onto this spot and provide target lazing or troop deployment intel etc.

*edit: and just like that I had a new desktop wallpaper :P

This engine is turning out to be pretty amazing though, just the kind of modern version of the old graphical style I was hoping for.

Are those cactus (cacti?) trees? I wonder if you take damage if you rub up against one.

@ Dev's -

How far are we gonna beable to shoot in this game? In PS1 unless you had a sniper you were only limited to about 200 meters. I think BF3 has pretty good engagement ranges, only issues I have with them is the whole "scope sway" concept on snipers but not on anything else, made it very hard to shoot people at medium range when they don't need to hold breath to fire back.

if there is a teabagging emote, please make it hurt the user if he teabaggs cacti ;-)

i like the picture. really looks planetsidish!
but i would like to see some plants that are more thought outside the box. a little more alien flora. the bushes, trees and cacti we saw so far could be actual earthling flora.

oh and if you wanna make money from the store, sell cacti hats to snipers! and hats with tree branches and leaves. and the rock-helmet of course!

I'm just imagining carefully cresting those sort of ridges with a squad of outfit guys just as the sun rises, after having carefully dropped behind enemy lines in a galaxy before daylight.

It will be glorious!

I can't wait to see screenshots of the seas in sunny weather from cliffs in this game. Also, my most wanted at the moment would be one of an air cavalry group flying towards enemy lines at sunset on an ominously-clouded night.

Good stuff!

I agree the screenshot looks really good. I would love to see some weather shots. As the poster said above me. Flying towards some dark ominous clouds. You can see lightning booming in the distance. It would be cool.

Can't wait, I love the screen. As for the question, I'm a little too hot-headed for recon, if I was doing recon from there it would look something like this:

Squad Leader: "What do you have to report?"

Me: "Well, They're running around down there and screaming something about an attack, while I've just been doing some target practice to pass the time."

I take it they aren't familiar with PlanetSide?

This one area looks like it'll be fun to fight in. It looks comparable in size to a current multiplayer FPS map...if they don't know of PlanetSide's scale...you could blow their minds.

Fog and rocks obscuring the distance, low res textures on rocks if you look close and low detail everywhere else.

It's an MMO! Few people are even going to be able to run it on medium... These graphics are more than reasonable.

that's called the atmosphere. Go climb a mountain in Yellowstone and see how far you see.

And if you look at one of the earlier pictures of 2 tr not far from their base, there's a 3rd TR closer to the base.

The distance you see is much farther than you think.

I think it looks great, can't wait to try it out for real and spend a crap load of time just exploring. Bring back the exploration merit please!

I think the haze in the distance is just glare from the star ( I wont call it the sun) and the fact that we can actually see that kind of effect just speaks volumes about the engine itself.

the terrain is looking fantastic, its one of the things i love best so far. i was actually watching an friend play Skyrim and i was thinking of having the landscape of Skyrim for an PS2 cont. all the hills, valleys, mountains, rivers, lakes, snow, dense forests, caves, etc would be awesome to fight in. :D

Yeah that screenshot still looks like so Mario64-ish at best. Look at those ugly textures and pathetic detail everywhere else. I'll pass on this one even if it's F2P. Unreal2 had better visuals graphically.

I can't tell if you're trolling or you actually think that. For an mmo, the graphics are great, just compare this to WoW and see the difference. But with as many people on the screen as an mmo has, it's impossible to have skyrim-esque graphics. Hell, If I spawn 20 NPC's with the console, it lags my computer pretty bad, now imaine PS2 with that. I'm glad that they're going with a fuction-over-graphics approach to rendering, it'll make the game the maximum amount of fun.

I couldn't help but notice that, on the opposing ridgeline, there appears to be a solar panel independent of the AMP Station. I was wondering how exactly the base perimeters work. Is there a network of smaller emplacements outside the walls, linked to it, or are those structures associated with the outposts?
