Now although it pains me to say this, and its might not be as constructive for a game in development, but what if SOE get Planetside 2 wrong and make a total mess of it?

Do you think we will be able to save it, or do you think it will fade as fast?

PS. this has been bugging me for days, and I had to say it. I hope SOE don't make a mess of it, it looks like a good crew who have a passion for the whole thing, lets just prey it has the PS1/BF/COD/MW feeling lol, as its been swayed that way.

What do you mean by "wrong" ? Your "wrong" might be my "right". Your "wrong" could also be my "wrong".

And what if they get PS2 partly wrong ? A game is judged on its overall appeal and PS2 will be free to play.

In the end, if you don't like it ? Don't play it. If I do not enjoy it, I will not play it. Or at least not for extended periods of time since I might enjoy some of the game's aspects and hate others.

fyi, I'm not trying to bash you. I am just stating what will likely happen once the game comes out. and I do hope it will be a large success because otherwise, it will be a long time until we see another company risk to develop a MMOFPS.

Hardly a single fuck will be given.
Seriously. How many shitty games do people care about after it's found to be shit? There's too many good ones to linger on a crap game.

Now if they get it right there will likely be far reaching impacts into the big FPS titles, who are already moving into a more online, semi-persistent, rpg-hybrid kind of realm.
And into the MMORPG titles which may try to implement more action gameplay with aiming and the like, instead of the percentage based stuff we mostly see.

Then Smed's should be put in the pillory and never allowed to touch a AAA title again.

What do we have riding on this? Potential fun.
What does SOE and the devs have riding on this? Tons of money, and jobs, and maybe even a few careers.

Perspective. As much as we want this to be successful, the people who are working on the game want it that much more.

This gives SoE and incentive to make the game "safe". A CoD/Battlefield rip off because they already know it will make money. Taking a risk and making Planetside 2 too different is too much to risk their profit or their jobs. Its a sad state of mind that has infected the gaming community in general, not just Consoles. Ever notice how most new games all play similarly to other, more succesful games? Taking risks wont guarentee profit, so why not go with formulas and systems that prove they will?

Planetside 1 was hardley profitable in the grand scheme. So they will change the crap out of Planetside for Planetside 2. Look at all the "modern features" they are trying to cram into a game that never needed them. So that Planetside 2 WILL make money.

By making it "safe". Once the new CoD/Bf comes out those players will leave, but SoE will have made its profit, and PS2 will die.

I hope this wont happen, but i sadly wont be suprised if it does. Heres hoping they do it right.

I feel like I have to knock on wood every time I read this.

It's my secret fear that they will make the game feel too much like a modern shooter which turns the scale of combat into nothing more than a novelty and then that novelty will wear off in short time.

If they get it wrong. Mass exodus from servers and it will look like PS1 currently. Also don't ever count on seeing a Planetside 3.

If they get it right. Tons of money for SOE. A Future for the MMOFPS genre. As they just set a new level of what a game is meant to be. The days of 64 players on a map will be gone. The new standard will be 100's if not 1000's of players and planetside 2 will be setup on a Platform for future games as to what a MMOFPS is suppose to be.

Good question. Large scale (fights, logistics, tactics) must be in the game for me, and I would think PS1 vets too. If it doesn't have that then there's no point. Everything else is candy after that and I think we are going to be getting top of the line candy here :)

Safe? Are you kidding? Planetside 2 is a ground breaking game using a brand new engine. The sheer scale of it makes it completely peerless. Trying to equate it to any other shooter that has been released or is under development will always fall short because nobody is trying what Planetside 2 is doing.

Safe? I can't think of another shooter that is taking as many risks and blazing as many trails as Planetside 2 is.

Also, shooter development didn't peak in 2003, so let's not pretend that something common in newer shooters is automatically bad.

Even if it's a complete garbage game I'll still continue to play it.

Just the fact that it's a sequel to PS will keep me playing it for years to come, despite how terrible it may be.

If this is a game that was destined for failure, Higby and the boys wouldn't be this active with the community.

This is why games like Tribes: Ascend will be empty after a few months and games like Planetside2 will be running for a few years.

They only have to get one thing right for me to enjoy it and that's the persistent world combat and feeling of large scale combat.

I don't care if it feels like a modern shooter, a realism shooter, or a classic shooter. I'm not here for any of that because none of that was the highlight in PS1, as far as I'm concerned PS1 had no overall feel to it (it was as generic as you could get), and the only real reason it was a good game at all was because of the persistent large scale battles.

This.

They are fleshing out the game to be the largest scale FPS out there. It has to be a decent FPS first, and lots of stuff from the original PS just doesn't work now days.

Period.

If this game has a hope of succeeding it has to be a decent FPS and mind bogglingly huge.

What if a bunch of people who are barely FPS fans can't contain their mostly unfounded fears and post nonsensical threads on ps-universe?
