If its like any other beta I have done then the beta server may be only up for testing at certain times in the beginning. Especially if not all game elements are in yet. We will also most likely be testing specific elements of the game. We may have access to all upgrades one day and only specific upgrades on other days.

As an Australian - i can say that i was in the first beta wave back in the day hopefully region will not matter this time around again. I will be extremely disappointed if it is.

Wow, what excellent news! I was actually a little disappointed about the beta when I heard about PS1 players getting into the beta before others (I forgot my station account from when I used to play PS1). However, yesterday, after alot of guessing I finally managed to remember my old station account that had registered for PS1 back in 2004. Looks like my chances of getting into the PS beta just increased by quite a bit!

Honestly, preparing for something like a beta in regards to implementing a code for a beta key entry on a website isn't too hard. I don't see them putting that up on their website unless the beta was coming soon as it's something they could easily test privately.They have to assume that the fans would start speculating and getting excited as soon as this went live. I really don't think that the game is in the stage of development that allows for large scale beta testing. How many base types have we seen? Two? We've seen very little of the VS as of yet, and based on discussions with higby and various other devs it sounds like they are still largely in a very loose stage of development where varying ideas can still be considered and toyed with.

There is no hype. We, former and current planetside players, are exited because the game we love is getting a Sequel, with a new powerful engine, new toys, etc.
But the rest of the world? Well, there are a few non PS players lurking around, but there is no hype yet.
That one will start as soon as they are ready for a hype. For this, they first need the game polished, and their core mechanics tested within a proper enviorment. Remember, Planetside didnt have the lattience system at the beginning, they added that during beta to prevent backhacks. Exactly the same stuff will happen with the Planetside 2 beta: We find something, break it apart, rape it, torture it for weeks, before the devs kick in the door, gun us down, and change the system that we broke.
They need to be sure a system works before advertising it. Otherwise you end up saying A, but doing B. Happend often enough, never ended good.

Besides that, for building a hype, your need screenshots and footage. Now, the key selling point of Planetside 2i s the thousands of players. To do videos, screenshots etc showing exactly that, you actually need thousands of players.

Therefore, i predict tha beta starts in March, after GDC. The focus will be on testing the core mechanics, and adjusting them if nessesary. Once done, they start generating the hype by showing the thousands of players fighting each other, once they know how much people exactly can fight in the same area.



Well, anyway, thats at least the theory. Now to the facts: Gotta set up a alarm system, that starts if any SOE email adress sends me a mail containing the word "beta" in the text. It should then ring my phone, start a rather loud alarm in my room (hearable within 5km), and propaby starts a few rockets for visual signals.

Anyway, if you look at the way SOE have released content, its in a very structured way, no full size screenshots on Twitter and all the other stuff has a structure and it is making its way through the list. Expect a few more weeks, then a few more after that for Rexo and Max weeks, then the shit hits the fan!

And if you think im wrong, it would be a very bad and school boy error on SOE's behalf to not use the Max and Rexo's to hype the game to the max, as these are 2 big factors of the game we all want to see!

But be assured when we do see the Rexo's and maxes beta is right round the corner! :)

You need no hype for a closed/explusive Beta which is for testing of mechanics and optimizing.
If they need to improve mechanics/gameplay and optimize the game for 2 or 3 Month in a closed Beta while they hyped the Game, it would be hard to keep the Hype going.
Better start the Hype with an Open Beta...

I think we need to calm our tits and be more realistic about the GDC hype.

Opening the beta before the show would force EVERYONE to work double-time to both prepare for GDC AND fix any stability issues. They won't risk a catastrophic failure of some kind by a flood of people clambering to play when the press is watching. What if the servers go down due to too much load or a netcode glitch? It's like advertising a super low-emission engine and then watching it billow black smoke on start-up. If their goal is to show how massive battles work, they'll let a hundred or two or so people in specifically to to break the current build in some fashion (if this isn't already happening).

You need no hype for a closed/explusive Beta which is for testing of mechanics and optimizing.
If they need to improve mechanics/gameplay and optimize the game for 2 or 3 Month in a closed Beta while they hyped the Game, it would be hard to keep the Hype going.
Better start the Hype with an Open Beta...

What kinda developer, in their right minds, show absolutely everything there is to know and see, even before launch?
I mean, come on. Just because you haven't seen X, there's no guarantee that X isn't completed yet.

Guys I understand with many of your concerns here, but it's getting a bit ridiculous. ;)

Point is we already have folks attempting to access it with guess codes, there will be some bad apples in the beta, and everything you keep hidden will make its way to the internet, its a fact, I even know many from PSU are only going into beta so they can play the game early and have no thought to why its in beta in the first place.

Point is, show the things that will hype the game while your in control of them and while they are new, to take any damage away from idiots who will splash it all on the internet, and also hype your game to the max ;) while doing so.

And another point, i could make a list as big as my arm on things we still have not seen. But notice the list is getting bigger on things we have seen and its all the big in game things we are getting glimpses of. So expect the Rexo and Max before beta.

One more point, we saw TR first, then NC then VS, in almost everything. Now we have seen the TR rexo, and glimpses of the NC, and we had a new one today, now the VS will be last. Then I think we will start on the maxes, we still have not seen a render of a full coloured max unit. But it will go TR, NC, VS then BETA!!!! :D

Why would they mess with beta activation codes when they force everyone have a station account anyway. Couldn't they just activate the beta for your account and email you about it? Would bypass a lot of nonsense such as lost emails or selling of keys.

I opened a support ticket and they changed my email for me. if you can remember what credit card you used and the billing address your sweet on the email front.

I think I saw a few others having the same problem earlier in the thread.You can open a support ticket and have them change the secret question/answer.

You will have to know what card you used and the billing address in order to identify yourself though. if you have access to your account you can look in your payment history to find a card.

Generally, they want testers with a variety of system specs. They will give high priority for people with top-tier systems (dual graphics, quad cores, high resolutions, elite sound cards) and for people with low-end systems with components 4-5 years ago and maybe even Dells. They will use data from these two groups to make sure that the game is playable on most computers, and those who have amazing systems will have the options necessary to maximize the potential of the game engine. The middle of the bell curve will receive beta invites last.
Beyond specs, they will probably want to select region-specific players at first but I am not sure about that.

Above all that, the first thing SOE will look at is whether or not you have a PS1 active subscription.

Smedley confirmed that active subscribers will get the beta invite first, and Higby mentioned it a while back (don't have the time to dig around his posts). I don't know if they look at how many hours logged total on your account, though that seems like the most fair approach

In my experience they make you run a diagnostics test and they submit your system info. When everyone gets an email about the beta opening soon, I think what they'll do is make everyone go through those diagnostics and then from there they can screen who they want to be in the beta. Otherwise, it doesn't make much sense to randomly pick people into beta when they want to select certain system specs (high-end and low-end)

This is not a 16 vs 16 game remember, i really do not see them basing access on system specs. Also there are some of us that will play the game or various ages and specs of machine depending on the time/day/geographic location.

There should be space for both vets and new players. Yet I fail to see how newer players would have better insight into the game. People from PS actually have a understanding with how large scale operations can work. Taking a normal size server from say BF3 of 30-60 and coordinating that. Most average gamers do not have that experience (I'm talking FPS here not RPG). If entire outfits from PS can get in they will actually be able to jump right in and give this game a proper testing as a result. This isn't your run and get 3 kills die 10 times then the round ends after 20 minutes FPS Of course there needs to be feedback from both sides, but I would protest giving new players priority over vets.

All that would result in is a round based cod bf clone effect.

New players are important but VETs have near 10 years of experience playing this style of mmofps(planetside) along with many much older games (i'm not saying all new players are children). Even today you can find your self in a platoon of 30 players with another 100+ players also playing your side. My outfit has something like 80 members and that is small. In the games prime a lot of outfits fielded 1000 members. This i what the game mechanics has to deal with but perhaps this time around x10.

Bugs that need finding that new players perhaps would never think to check because they haven't seen the mirrad of bugs in the previous game.

Length of play sessions, I know at the start of the game lots of people played 70hrs a week. even now i'm not sure my own game sessions drop below 4hrs (i do only play perhaps 1-2 times a week). If a new player that say is used to the odd 1-2hr bash that hardly enough time to get really into the game.

This is also why there tends to be alot of resistance to these "ideas" that new guys bring from other fps game that simply cannot work in planetside without destroying the open world persistence that the game is supposed to be about.

I love new players i really do but they need to be hugged by Vets or they may lose their way.

I remember being a noob in this game, it was cool. It you spent 50% of your time trying to get to a battle. When you run with a squad of vets, you tend to spend way more time fighting and less time messing around. :)

Since the game is going F2P I don't know why they would prioritize keys. Just send them out in a mass amount. That's what the magazine will be good for.

I'll be willing to bet that the beta doesn't start until March/April even with the key.

"yeah, how many are there so we can be ready to send them" "10" "Oh that's not going to work. We need more people than that.
