So I just got a new cpu, the AMD 3.1 ghz, 8 core bulldozer, and the stock fan just isnt cutting it. Any recommendations for a new cpu cooler?

Are you looking to overclock?

Yeah, i'll be overclocking. That's why I need a new one. It's running at around 63c under heavy loads, and it's supposed to throttle at 61 (mine hasn't, but i'd rather it not even get to that point), so i couldn't possibly overclock with the stock fan

If you are not looking for something pricey I recommend getting this http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005ERSN7G/ref=redir_mdp_mobile

What would you recommend if price wasn't an issue? not that i'll refuse a great cheap one lol

At first I was looking at closed loop water coolers, but after searching the interwebs i've heard that many good fans are actually better

So then I got to this

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103055&Tpk=coolermaster%20v8

What do you think about that one?

No, i'm not ignoring your recommendation. I just want to make to a good choice :D

Any of the flagship coolers from NZXT, Cooler Master, Thermalright, Phanteks, Noctua, Zalman and Be Quiet! should do. Some are quieter, some are cooler, some are cheaper, some install easier...I can't remember which are which though.

Edit: I seem to remember all that extra metal on the V8 didn't really achieve much, but I'd have to read the reviews to make sure.

Also, if you have tall RAM, make sure whichever CPU cooler you get can fit around it.

If money is nonobjective get this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608018.

I bet the macho out does the v8 too. I'll look some tests up when I get home. Pay attention to what vancha said about height of the ram too.

I'm personally torn between the NZXT HAVIK 140 or the Cooler Master Hyper 212+.

I got some $5 xigamatek(?) fan on newegg back during black friday, my 2500k idles under 28C and didn't go over 60 during gaming and video rendering when using a shitty motherboard automatic overclock.

is what I got, but now it's $30.

I wouldn't have thought the 212+ had anywhere near the performance of the Havik? Why has it come down to those two?

I didn't know NZXT even made a CPU cooler to be honest. Looks like a nice one considering its price tag in this review (http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/NZXT-HAVIK-140-CPU-Cooler-Review/1312/6).

In this review (http://www.technic3d.com/review/kuehler/1287-thermalright-macho-hr-02-cpu-kuehler/5.htm) the Macho out does the V8, while keeping up with the NH-C14. Yet in this review the NH-D14 is beating the NH-C14 when its the opposite in that other review. I don't know if it has anything to do with the technic3D review using a 920 @ 3.8 GHz which is outputting more wattage then that 870.

I would still go with the Macho given its price point if it will fit in your case. Its a beefy CPU cooler is all.

Depends on where I end up on budget.
