2) What system is in place for latency? Because I live in New Zealand so i get roughly 400-500ms ping when connecting to USA so will that mean i will have to aim 500ms in front of someone to hit them or will I aim at them and it takes 500ms to register that I hit them?

In response to 2) - World of Tanks had its server in the US and playing from Aus had an average ping of 230-250 ms on cable. No forward aiming on a slow target, just in game compensation for a fast target over distance. Whilst this is from a different coder and game I believe latency up to around this level is no longer an issue.

Once beta is announced you will be able to tell on these forums rather easily. You will have the threads were everyone is happy they got their key. Then the mad vets who didn't and will be making a bunch of threads saying they should be first vs PC gamer keys.

They way they have explained it is that the Beta will be done in several stages:

First, they will let in enough people to create full scale battles (my guess is they'll let in around 2000 people) to start messing with the balancing of the three factions, and this will be done on servers that aren't 24/7 but are maybe on over a weekend or something. The content will probably be limited to just continent we've been seeing, and possibly some vehicles/weapons excluded.

Then, they'll begin ramping it up by allowing in more players and leaving the servers on 24/7 (or maybe at least an entire week at a time), possibly opening up more continents, to test the broader pace of the game, and to begin testing netcode and optimizations.

Then the last stage (at which it'll probably be open beta), they'll be wanting as many people as possible to stress-test the servers, netcode, etc.

The way they'll be selecting players is using two pools of people: the "priority" pool are PS1 veterans, people who attended last year's Fan Fair, and those who entered a key from the PC Gamer article. The second pool are just general beta signups from their site. They will pull out names from the priority pool every time they need people (e.g. when they need 2k folks for the initial closed beta, they'll pull those names out of the priority hat), until they've extinguished that list and then go on to the general one.

My guess is that Beta will come around about 2 weeks after we see some screens of either the other two continents, or the MAXes (which I imagine to be one of the last things they're making) - that'll mean that most of the content has already been designed, animated, and implemented, and the logistics of the gameplay now need to be tested.

That is the point of beta. Release it early so you can find bugs. Also, Patches? Patches being a negative thing are so pre-2010. Now patches are released weekly and seen as a good thing. (Think League of Legends)

Lots of stuff in the GDC demo were place holders, like animations, sounds, and explosions. But, usually games go into beta when its feature complete I think. Does not mean they can't fix, edit, or add things, just means everything they want in there is in there. Recently they added the 3D cockpits.

I am sure we are close. I mean one of the latest dates it could be would be E3 which is surprising in five weeks.

Few hours ago they had a playtest. That is always a good sign if anything.

I honestly couldn't agree more. There is a lull in game releases atm. A big MMO FPS title if released now. Heck even the Beta would sweep the market at lightning speeds. I'm not saying this because I want to play beta. I do. I'm saying it because SOE could make a killing right now if they would just take advantage of this.

They are different markets. PS2 will be free for peeps to evacuate. I doubt it'll be one or the other for gamers.
I suspect now they'll keep putting in new content right up to E3 and then have a high impact showing with greater numbers than GDC.

On the map friendlies will be green. People in your squad will be another color and people in your Outfit(Guild) will be another color than that. SO squad up with buddies and you are good to go.

Granted, I myself have never been apart of a PC Beta before, and hopefully, this one, but I doubt the majority of people playing the Beta are playing for the problem scouting as much as the glory of gaining a head start on the games mechanics and such.

For one this beta will be huge for testing. How else are they going to find out the stress on their servers? A bad launch? No, they are going to test it.

Surprisingly that is the point of open betas. Yes people get to play, but it's a benefit to the Planetside 2 team as they get valuable data. All the PS1 vets and people who care will be giving feedback and reporting bugs. That is why they are giving people who go out of their way to participate early access.

This game isn't a year away, take a look at the recent screen shots and follow some of the guys on twitter. The general vibe I get from them is that beta is just around the corner and they can not wait to let us in on the action.

The whole reason for the beta is so devs can get priceless information regarding their game before they release it to the masses. And no they wouldn't say "beta in the near future" and wait till next year. No one is that stupid, the near future is not a year away.

The near future is subjective. It could mean as much as 10 years depending on the context. Obviously in this situation, 10 years is a bit much, but I have seen MANY a game fall to the carrot on the stick routine for more than two years with the "near future" tool.

Granted, I suggest not that this game shall take two years, just pointing out that this year has plenty of distractions, outside of the gaming world, which should prove to pull away attention in vast degrees, making the PlanetSide devs reconsider their Beta launch for early 2013.

Once again, hope I'm wrong.

Assuming that the 'E3 will be big' comment still holds, I'd say the recent radio silence in terms of updates and marketing material is leading more and more to a Beta announcement not coming this month, but coming at E3. That put's closed beta starting in mid-June-September, and depending on that, either a best case launch near Christmas, or later depending on how it goes. Personal prediction is we won't see an official launch until 2013, unfortunately.

Hey guys. Here's my new theory:

Beta will happen around the weekend of May 19th.

1. Planetside's 9 year anniversary.
2. E3 is supposedly going to be a big time for the PS2 community/beta (or something like that)*
2. T-Ray's tweeted at someone saying that he'd miss beta if he couldn't play in May. (i think or something)*
4. They just showed off the forgelight logo. I take this to mean they're putting together the beginning splash screen (what I would assume to be one of the final things they would add before beta).
5. They devs just keep tweeting things like "Planetside 2 is so awesome" and thats it.

E3 needs to be a big splash for SOE, not a few game journos running round empty bases. Guaranteed Beta will be up before then to be sure we can all log in etc. so that they're guaranteed several hundred of us running about like stoned chimps shooting each other up during Higby's next live demo.

Think of it like the GDC demo, but with some computers where players can join the devs. Not quite the full blown beta, but a game that is playable for the E3 public. So basically, the alpha client and alpha servers being used, but for the first time with access for the public / E3 visitors. So where for a beta you have to have all the registration stuff ready and running, here you only get a precreated character/account or can use a temporary one. ( E3_visitor_PC_1, E3_visitor_PC_2, ... , YourTemporaryCharName1, YourTemporaryCharName2 )

Hope that is understandable. It is all speculation anyways. :)

I too hope for beta for sure, but i think it would be possible to pull off, for example by limiting the spawn points so all visitors will run into the big fight by default. There are many factors i simply do not know, for example how big the booth will be, how many pcs will be available to visitors... Beta would certainly the better option, but if it is not ready in time for E3, i am pretty sure they will have a plan to let people play anyway.

I'm not that concerned about there not being a beta announcement at E3. Of course, it would possibly create a large hype/interest towards the game, since it's gonna be "just around the corner guys, get ready for it!". Personally I'm sick of looking for beta information when the only information is "soon" So I will no longer traffic this site. If I don't get an email for a beta then ps2 is dead to me. See, they will know when they want it finished, but anyone that has ever tried to do something creative along the lines of writing a computer program will be aware that stuff happens you weren't expecting. Experience helps you make better guesses but there will always be uncertainty.

Unreleased software makes no money - so they'll be working their socks off, but equally, unfinished or buggy software is the worst kind of publicity so it needs to be done right.

As Kipper said it's not ready. They aren't going to give a date then rush it or even worse possibly not make it. There are millions of moving parts to video game design and another million more parts to Media and PR. They can't just "Give a date" when there is so much that has to come together. This isn't even counting executives, financing, coordination with other Sony announcements.. It's not just 12 developers sitting in a garage somewhere holding out their game.

Scenes like the one you described could have easily happened in PS1. I don't see why it shouldn't be in PS2.

Fighting with few support against a superior number does happen in other games, too. It's always a matter of how well you arrange your defense on that spot.

Maybe not so much about convoys but in PS1 you could defend a tower with relatively few people until the enemy throws in a very great number of troops. All you could do is fight and hope that reinforcements would arrive.

The problem with the Black Hawk Down scenario is that in a respawn game, there's no need or reason to hold out against an attacking force. Just fight, die and respawn.

HOWEVER - it would wrk if you were defending an objective. Say, the capture point for a hex you own. That way, you might be fewer against many, but you might have a respawn Gal deployed to prevent you simply being wiped out - and you are holding territory, so that's a reason to stay there and fight the odds.

The way I understand it is:

I figured that we're going to have loadouts similar to the original. So lets say I've trained a ton of things for Heavy Assault and I have two loadouts for it.

Base Assault
Base Defense

They each have their certs allowed maxed out but with different things, one being more offensive one being more defensive.

EDIT: I could be 120% wrong on all of this, it's just the way I've come to understand it so far but I could be totally missing something somewhere that I didn't read.

There's the PC Gamer mag codes from the April edition, that puts you in the same reserved spot as the subscribers of the original Planetside, but at this point, it probably won't be easy to find them in any stores, same goes for online. Your best bet is to simply subscribe to the original game at this point. Also, I remember reading the the beta will come in waves, so being a subscriber or a code user might not guarantee getting in the first wave or so.

I find the idea of contributing to amazing first impressions for Planetside 2 at E3 to be very, very awesome indeed.

If they do send a wave of beta invites out next week, I'm sure it'll all be under strict NDA - I wouldn't want to ruin the surprise of, "For the first time, you can get some hands-on playtime with Planetside 2! In short, Yes. They've said that all subscribers to PS1 will be given access to Beta at some point. They haven't said "and you must have been continuously subbed since May 2003".

No guarantees at which stage of beta we will get in though. I would imagine some favoured hand-picked indviduals will get the honour of being in the first wave.

Well man, i hope i understood your question... if it's going to be a beta, then everything should be included so that everything can be tested. The ONLY thing that might not be included is the credits system with real money (as discussed in another thread). But even this depends from company to company.

imho the beta will be announced in E3, mostly because beta announcements is a big attraction/marketting point for any game in any game conference. And truth to be told, PS2 has been under the radar till now, just like MechWarrior Online was; until the beta announcement in GDC.

I know that this data is usually internal, so I'm not asking for the exact milestone names or anything, but maybe something similar to a progress bar of whats required for beta and what's done? IE you have 15 milestones left on the gantt chart, so show us how close to the beta announcement you are. so in a week, we'd see: got some stuff done! bar moves. I know it would be like ms minutes, however just something to give us an actual idea.

This soon stuff while appreciated, does not give us any idea. I mean even if you show 90% done, and then move the bar back to 75% with an announcement of discovered a severe bug that would still feel to me as one of the consumers like a meatier answer then the abstract soon.

I know that this data is usually internal, so I'm not asking for the exact milestone names or anything, but maybe something similar to a progress bar of whats required for beta and what's done? IE you have 15 milestones left on the gantt chart, so show us how close to the beta announcement you are. so in a week, we'd see: got some stuff done! bar moves. I know it would be like ms minutes, however just something to give us an actual idea.

This soon stuff while appreciated, does not give us any idea. I mean even if you show 90% done, and then move the bar back to 75% with an announcement of discovered a severe bug that would still feel to me as one of the consumers like a meatier answer then the abstract soon.

Or not, just something to stop me from going screw it, the princess can stay in another castle.

There is a jar filled with beer caps. It was sorta close to the beta mark on the jar last we saw. Hamma got to put one in himself.
