I'm personally wondering about it recently, so want to hear other's opinions about this topic.
How much change in body size/stature can we make when creating characters, without breaking/affecting the combat balance?

I doubt we can do any of that. Someone was freaking out here recently because females were apparently 6 ft tall, just as the male character model was.
Any noticeable difference would affect animations as well.

And hitboxes.
Anyways: Maxsuits don't seem to be one size fits all...

Hmm.... So, the only way we are able to make changes about this is when changing suit type, right?
I'm fine with that :)

I'd implement a slider for height.. anywhere from 5'8 to 6'4".
Obviously, the 6'4 guys would be slightly larger targets. They'd get a buff in some way. Maybe a bit more ammo, or a few more hitpoints.
And just so people cannot bitch about it at all, you can change your height at a biolab.
A muscularity slider would also be great.
And i'd like to see you able to pick from like 10 different walk/run cycles. This is something that games virtually never do, and would actually have the least impact on any sort of balance.

How could character size possibly make a diffrence?

keep male and female the same sizes helps keep balance.

So basically fluff that involves a lot of animation work?

Then I'll pick a character that does moonwalking.

Come now! They don't have time to add buggies, do you think they will add such nonsence? Maybe in a few years, in one of PS2's clones.

This isn't a RPG. They do not need to moon walk or be midgets or w/e. Keep them the same size. This is a FPS not WoW. If you want all that extra crap there are plenty of other games out there for you.

Human race is getting taller, kinda makes sense that everyone's 6ft 2".
Character customisation would be cool but it would affect balance, not as much as people think it would but it still would.

An ammo/HP buff? Are you out of your mind?
The human race practically balanced themselves FOR you! Taller people RUN FASTER and usually can JUMP HIGHER, while shorter people usually don't run as fast or jump as high, but can hide a little better. Done.

I'm not gonna be happy 'till character models range from Yao Ming to the hunchbak of Notre Dame.

If you want variation in stature, roll a type 1 or type 4 body in SWTOR. Keep that blasphemy out of my game please.

Small waist? Yuck. Not to mention even boobs stop looking good when they are out or proportion :D
As for the topic. APB had very customizable characters. You couldnt make a midget, but definitely a character that would be short or tall or normal. They gave everyone the same, one size hitbox though that was approximately the average height. So there could've been time where aiming at a very tall guy to the top of the head wouldnt score hits or aiming above the head of a very small character could still score hits.
Not a perfect solution, but IMO better than giving advantage to small characters or trying to give big characters something else to balance it.

I totally agree
To test this feature it would be cool if on april's fool devs turn NC to 1/10th of their original scale

Perhaps have something similar to DCUO so we can have great behemoths of dudes in MAX's then tiny dudes in cloaks sniping from afar.
Obviously scale hit boxes so the tiny dudes are really hard to hit.

No, cos then anyone who wants to be competetive has to make smallest possible char.
It doesnt matter in DCUO cos there are no hit boxes cos it's autotargeted.

I remember reading somewhere that every character model would be 6'2". Don't ask for a source because I don't have one just know that I go to church a lot and try not to lie.
