All Vanu Sovereignty armor configurations are equipped with a Force Blade. The Force Blade’s powered edge can effortlessly tear through shields and modern body armor alike. [RadarX]

I like most of the VS designs, but that knife is just a bit too gonzo looking for my tastes. Actually this applies to all of the knives. I might change my mind if I can get mine with a Damascus blade customization. :)

Sort of looks like something out of Power Rangers.

That doesnt look like some high tech weapon. Thats straight medieval brutality. If it was something like laser cutter or something it would be more fitted for VS.

That's what I was thinking. It's obviously designed to do it's damage on the twist out of the body. Gross.

Personally, I would have expected something like a smooth, thin dagger-like blade that delivered a huge shock when it touched someone.

almost looks klingon.

a slim glowing vibro or laserknife would fit better for vs in my opinion.
or the purple action figure with adad action ;-) or the horn of a unicorn that pops out lovely heartshaped bubbles when it hits someone.

PSU: "The NC knife looks nothing like the old knife, it sucks! The VS knife looks like the old knife, it sucks!"

Anyways that a side, it looks nice. The crossguard is a bit weird looking and slightly to long but that's my only gripe.

I have to say that this is one of the less inspiring weapon designs I've seen so far.

The light's not great but it looks black as appose to purple right? which is a shame.

As somebody said it doesn't look futuristic at all. I would say there needs to be more "energy" there. Purple electricity running up and down the blade maybe, or something involving laser technology.

The knife itself looks okay, just fairly dull.

Oh yeah, what did it mean by body armour? I thought PS2 was only having health and shields (shields effectively replacing armour points), I didn't know we were having all 3.

Unless it's talking about it in a realistic sense and not a gameplay sense.

Have they announced that knives will only have a single function? I would have assumed they still had the double function and would have a cool effect when turned on. I mean, how am I supposed to use my chainblade if I can't turn it on? :p

Looks dull. Deadly, but dull.

I'd like to see a little more flamboyance in the knife. More purple too.

Maybe it secretly turns into a Force Weapon that sends victims hurtling into objects with a sickening crunch.

I always imagined the VS would've modded whatever forcefield tech was used to make a soldier's armour into a cutting blade of some sort. So it'd appear as a whisper thin smoky, transparent shimmer sprouting forth from the hilt. I mean, it is called a force blade, after all. :p

Eiither that or they'd have a monofilament blade. :D

Eiither that or they'd have a monofilament blade. :DYeah, because that wouldn't break the moment you tried to use it or anything. :p

This whining about how the knife "isn't future enough" and "isn't purple enough" is ridiculous. They made a thing that you can use to stab people, they didn't need it to put on a song and dance as well.

dis·cus·sion (d-skshn)
n.

Consideration of a subject by a group; an earnest conversation.
A formal discourse on a topic; an exposition.
Consideration or examination by argument, comment, etc., especially to explore solutions; informal debate.

whine (hwn, wn)
v. whined, whin·ing, whines
v.intr.

To utter a plaintive, high-pitched, protracted sound, as in pain, fear, supplication, or complaint.
To complain or protest in a childish fashion.
To produce a sustained noise of relatively high pitch: jet engines whining.

Sorry, but Pointing out those aspects of the design that you don't like or offering up alternative ideas for what might make a good VS knife in a rational manner is not whining. It's called discussion.

No, whining would be doing something like criticizing other peoples' ideas - or the very fact that they're expressing their ideas at all - in an unnecessarily sarcastic manner during an otherwise level-headed discussion. ;)

As for your comment on monofilament blades.... PS2's gameplay has rather strong roots in science fiction, and monofilament blades made from stronger-than-steel materials have been present in speculative fiction since the 60's. And given that we have such technologies in PS2 as invisibility suits that somehow still let the wearer see, resurrection, teleportation via spawn tubes, etc, I would think you'd be able to suspend your disbelief just enough to take it on faith that in the several centuries that transpire between the present day and the time PS2 takes place, we might have figured out how to increase the Van Der Waals force in a monofilament thread to the point that it might make a viable melee weapon.

But perhaps that's just asking too much of your imagination... :D

My two pennies:

Not the kind of design that fits vanu's advanced technology theme. I would have imagined something with cleaner lines and some kind of energy up the knife to show its more than just a piece of metal.

More on these lines: ?

I also don't think the jagged edges go, they don't seem to have any particular rhyme to them either.

IMO too fantasy'ish and too inconvenient looking.

We have to remember we are talking about military grade stuff, here.

Yeah, I was only considering the third of the knife towards the tip (and as an inspiration). Agree with you it could look more military issue than that.

NC should have a Sykes-Fairbairn knife.

Actually I think this design fits the VS perfectly.
1. It really fits in with the "cultist" aspect they have been attributed.
2. It follows the same scarab esque design and look (look at the Magrider armor sidegrades)
3. It is made by scientists, so it is scientifically designed to be extra stabby =)
4. I can definitely picture a powerfield overlapping the blade for the added energy action

It almost makes sense that all of the VS weapons and vehicles will be elegant looking and almost artistic in nature, but the one thing that is meant for close and bloody work is something that really grabs at the savage nature that lurks within even the most scientific of minds.

5. It actually is very reminiscent of a Scalpel.

Looks like the original one...I really like the look of this, nice job T-Ray :-)

Only suggestion I'd give less contoured handle, lose the ring near the base of the blade and also it'll be great is it glows too..

I like. But why is the blade an inch thick? Looks like it'd have trouble beheading a slug let alone the TR...

To complain or protest in a childish fashion.Apparently I didn't make this plain enough for you to understand my point. I will endeavor to be clearer in the future.

I feel that some individual's complaints about the color and appearance of the knife are somewhat childish, in the sense they are complaints I might expect from a child's view.

I see no problem with the shade of purple that the artist has chosen. It seems to me that he's successfully struck a balance between giving it the VS color scheme and making it look ridiculous in day-glo purple.

I see no problem with the design. "Advanced" does not mean "shiny". This is a combat knife. When ammo is spent, forcefields have been disrupted, monofilament lines have snapped, and the batteries on your lightsaber have run out, a combat knife is still there so that you can shove a sharpened piece of metal through somebody's visor. Planetside is rooted in sci-fi, but it also has a curiously pragmatic flavor to it and I like that.

If it makes anyone feel better I'm sure it will be much shinier once it's actually been turned on.

Tbh, I'd have preferred a kosh or lead pipe to thwack people over the back of the head with a dull metal thud sound. SOE dropped the ball on that. :p
